And despite tumblr staff insisting that the CEO was acting against their interests, the broad transmisogyny evident in the site's culture and moderation policy has still not been adequately addressed?

It's pretty funny how much animal camouflage, especially insect camouflage, is a backwards engineered mess of unreadable code, that produces a result which only barely seems effective to human eyes because after millions of years of focus groups, that weird uncanny valley of colors is just the one that most consistently triggers "I am bark" or "I am poisonous" or "I am a larger predator" to potential predators. And it's not like a hundred percent success rate, it's just genetic blobs blindly feeling around for why they're making more genetic blobs instead of being digested into protein by the stomach of a field mouse. It's like "what made you" and the answer is one million years averaged out into some semblance of consistency. It's kinda cool, take a bunch of proteins, give them a million years to work on it, and they can figure out what a snake's head looks like, and build a worm shaped like that. They don't even have eyes, they're just like sculptors and all the non-snake worms get trimmed away by hungry birds.

Honestly it seems less weird than active camouflage in cuttlefish octopus and squids (a colorblind animal that can color match its surroundings) or the trifoliolata vine (can change size/shape/color leaves to mimic other plants including fake plants)

Trial and error seems pretty straightforward

Everything sounds weird til you remember cells are just nebulous blobs of dots held together by friendly chains of molecules and sometimes a photon bounces off one and makes a darker spot and you end up with a human eye later on.

Your skin already changes color based on sunlight, just write that up on an epic scale of time and cuttlefish and octopuses make perfect sense, why not? One rotating blob of different colored cells is pretty likely and handy enough to block some UV or stuff, why can't it rotate faster and with more complexity? Living things are dumb as hell in the most fascinating of ways, and genetic changes come at you so fast, you won't believe how soon new things show up. I don't know why a plant figured out how to immitate things but it's hard to know how trees and fungus find each other underground, and the point of it all is that's so cool and it's not even trial and error - that's too complicated for life.

It's just a trait that existed and survived. Maybe not even useful, and it doesn't even have to survive every time. Traits only need to survive long enough, and that's all. Long enough to make more. Life isn't smart, just unbelievably staggeringly amazing and it never stops. It doesn't have reason or a choice, just a huge and constantly changing world that it reflects back through time and space and the dumb falability of molecular bonds. Light spots and dark spots.
