It's the same nightmare as always, though no less terrifying because of its familiarity. It's the fire, the one that nearly claimed her life but instead brought her to Louis and Lestat.

It's confusion, and pain, and complete, mindless terror. It's the heavy, cloying scent that she knows now is burning hair and roasting flesh, and the complete certainty that she's going to die, burned beyond recognition. The incinerator round the back of the house gives off the same terrible stench and it turns her stomach, drives her to hide out in her room with the windows barred tight until the fire is out and the smell has dispersed. Maybe the window wasn't shut properly, or maybe it was Lestat forcing her to watch - it doesn't matter.

What matters is that it feels real, that she's so certain all over again that she's going to die. But, just as the first time, Louis is there to drag her out of the flames and the nightmare's grip.

Her throat hurts - but this time it's because she's been screaming, not because of the burning smoke she's inhaled. Her knees and elbows hurt, but they're not burned, merely bruised where she's been thrashing in her coffin.

She inhales and chokes on a sob, flinging her arms around Louis and clinging tight to the back of his shirt. For a minute or two, all she can do is sob, she can't breathe -

But Louis is here. Slowly, in great heaving wails, she comes back to herself and to the life she has after the fire. She can breathe again and the phantom smell of smoke clinging to her hair and clothes disappears; she is safe, just like he says.

"I'm sorry, Daddy Lou," she says finally, letting go of him so that she can pull back and wipe her eyes. "I didn't mean to wake you. It just felt so awfully real." She tries for a smile, but it's weak and watery. "You ought to get on back to coffin now. Silly old me, probably disturbed the whole neighborhood with my wailing. We'll have to tell them we've got a feral cat living here or some such."

This is the first time that Claudia is truly celebrating Christmas outside the religious ceremony of it all. In the past, it's been a day of dry church services rounded off with a quiet, terse meal before bed. Louis is her not so secret favourite of the two of them, and she's pleased to be allowed a little time alone with him. Linking her arm with his, she drags him down the rows of trees. They all look the same, they all smell the same, but she just knows that when she finds the one, she'll know it. "That one's too droopy, look at it," she says derisively, as if she does this every year and has any idea what she's looking for. There's as much fun in pretending to be a human as there is in pretending to be something else she's not: in this case, someone who has a solid understanding of the finer details of picking out a Christmas tree. It's serious business, she thinks, pulling Louis away from the smaller trees and stops before one that's probably taller than her and Louis combined. "Wow," she breathes, tipping her head back to look up to the top of the tree. Her eyes are wide as saucers, reflecting the pretty lights strung up to mark the aisles. "This one. It's gotta be this one. Just look at it! It's huge, pro'lly the biggest Christmas tree I ever saw."

Sometimes, Claudia thinks that she hates him. Uncle Les no longer. Now just Lestat, a little attempt at feeling his equal. Golden, lion-named and lion-maned little tyrant that he is. Smug, too smart for his own good, and possessive. She hates him, hates him for Louis, hates everything about him.

Yet at the same time, she knows she'd be dead without him. Louis was the one who'd risked himself in that fire for her, but Lestat was the one who'd truly saved her. Something he holds over her in his own head, she's sure of it. Unwanted daughter, unwelcome house guest.

Claudia thinks all of these things, but she never speaks of them. She's never written of them in her many diaries, either. She doesn't trust Lestat not to pry. Sometimes, she thinks she'd love to tell Louis all of her thoughts and feelings on Lestat, but she keeps her cards close to her chest for now. Louis loves him; no matter her own misgivings, the warnings that stir her gut instinct, she doesn't intend to get in the way of that for now. For now, she holds her tongue, like her auntie taught her, and watches. She bides her time, and builds a case against golden Lestat.
