If you were to tell a story, how would it go?
another interesting train of thought: i like to consider why dirk has chosen rose as the mark for his incestuous fantasy instead of dave, beyond like very typical hussie subversion to frustrate readers (sorry dirkdave fans..). before the release of the epilogues, i would've thought dave would be the obvious choice for dirk to fulfill this desire, but i find the choice of rose instead to be so so interesting... i think it is this need to mirror, in a lot of ways, and obviously an expression of this patriarchal fantasy, but i also wanted to consider his behavior in the alpha timeline as well. i think dave and dirk were both sort of disappointed to meet each other in person... and typically the focus is on dave's internal struggle and anxiety surrounding bro, but what about dirk's hero worship of some hollywood director he's never met? 16 year old dave would certainly fall flat there. dirk spends a lot of time trying to emulate alpha dave, who he never even knew. so what does he know about him? he knows alpha dave and alpha rose had some kind of partnership. maybe that stayed in the back of dirk's mind and "having" rose could act as a kind of extension of this emulation. this doesn't have a lot of canonical basis, i just think its incheresting to consider :)
HELLO??
(x) (x)
it’s funny because i obviously write a lot about abuse and trauma and dark themes but to me daverose is unequivocally romantic and like the purest most raw love and understanding that two people could have for one another they die together in every timeline their love is transcendent of time/space/understanding like they are two halves of one whole, whatever his soul is made of mine is the same, etc etc so don’t get it twisted!!!!!
i appreciate the recent criticism i have seen of the lack of interaction that jade and rose have in homestuck (like its actually laughable how little they talk it’s mind boggling) BUT it does lack analysis of the most unsavory explanation for this, which is: rose is short with jade because she’s jealous that dave is friends with another girl. is this misogynistic? yes. but it is also just a fact.
more on this: i think it’s funny that rose is characterized by a lot of new fans as a “girls girl” when a lot of her relationships with other girls in homestuck (that she isn’t attracted to) are antagonistic at worse and just lackluster at best. rose doesn’t seem to get along with other girls, especially when she’s young. when she’s older, obviously she has relationships with women, but can we say that she treats other women well?? i would argue no.
Okay. Hear me out about this. I think Bro Strider is actually a overbearing helicopter parent rather than a neglectful one, while Mom Lalonde is the neglectful one.
I know a lot of ppl portray him of disappearing for long stretches of time but I wonder if he would've even allowed Dave to have that level of alone time and privacy at all. All of his work and stuff he does for cash is on his computer can be done from that apartment he doesn't really have to go out at all.
And someone who constantly checks in on you, stares at you, looks at what you're doing etc. That would invoke a feeling of needing to keep up appearances at all times and not knowing how to actually relax at all since your nervous system is set to expect that he'll show up all the time and does. And it's to the point that you can see that Bro Strider predicted every single fuck up Dave made trying to get into the medium and prepared for a contingency for it. Getting a second copy of the game, cutting the meteor for more time, saving him from his fall from the tower, using Lil Cal to keep an extra eye on him at all times.
He wasn't the inebriated deadbeat weirdo, he's the hyper strict, suffocating helicopter one When we usually think of these kind of parents, abstinence and religion tends to be one of the core reasons for how strict they are. But Bro isn't like that. His strictness comes from trying to prep for the end of the world, which has nothing to do with sex and violence in his head. So why would he care? There's more important things that need to be drilled into this boy so he'll live
by contrast, we know Roxy can literally hop into the void and allow herself to fade into the background and out of your life if she so chooses. Mom Lalonde definitely left Rose to her own devices while she was either away or passed out from drinking, then her guilt gifts later fell on deaf ears bc Rose can't be bought like that
I think you can also get the gist of how each type of abuse was based on how Dave and Rose process their childhoods and their initial reactions to it as they start to put pieces together.
Dave falls into an anger and hatred for his brother and breaks out to do anything and everything he can think of while he's finally not being monitored. All the while brewing deep in his guts how pissed he is about what he went through.
Rose, on the other hand, knows her mother loved her and goes through a phase of feeling like she was the worst daughter in the world when in reality, her lashing out was a direct result of the neglect she was facing. Rose knows her mom loves her and did her best but she needs to, now, let go of the 'but she tried' mentality and get to 'she let me down,'
Oh my god, you're so right. Hope it's okay if I add to this, because it really got me thinking about all the things we see in the comic to support this.
In his very first scenes in the comic, we see Dave wandering around his apartment, seemingly alone but actually being observed by Bro the entire time. Bro lurks invisibly off-panel, darting in and changing things while Dave's back is turned. He has cameras strewn throughout the apartment that could be recording at any time. Dave lives in a state of constant surveillance. He can't let his guard down for a moment. Even when he thinks Bro isn't watching, Bro is watching.
This also gives the impression that aspects of Dave's life that seem to be products of neglect (such as not having any food in the kitchen) are in fact deliberate choices on Bro's part, which frankly kind of makes it even worse.
All of this surveillance is obviously a bad thing. However, it does mean that Bro is actually, genuinely, fairly tuned into the things that Dave enjoys. See for example how he keeps up with Dave's blog and webcomics and can effortlessly reference SBaHJ memes. He pays attention to Dave, for better and for worse.
This is unlike Mom.
See, I don't think Mom gets Rose at all. She showers Rose with gifts, but the gifts are so wildly out of touch that they betray a complete and utter misunderstanding of who Rose is as a person. Like seriously, Mom, what could possibly have made you think your 13-year-old goth daughter would want a gigantic princess doll for her birthday? Rose assumes it's a passive-aggressive jab against her, which frankly is a mental fiction that is protecting her from an even more devastating realization: that her own mother knows so little about her that she genuinely thinks Rose would like this thing.
And then there's the whole "ironic negligence" thing in Rose's strife with Mom, where Mom pushes Rose to try a cocktail. If we reject Rose's idea that Mom's actions are intended to be ironic, we're left with… a mother who genuinely thinks it's a good idea to encourage her 13-year-old daughter to drink? Like maybe this is her weird attempt at bonding, and the only way she can conceive of to connect to someone is to get wasted together. I really don't know, I'm just saying, there's no explanation for this that isn't terrible and weird.
Basically, Dave lives with a guardian whose actions are bizarre in part because he is deliberately living his entire life as ironic performance art. Rose lives with a guardian whose actions are so bizarre that Rose assumes it must be ironic performance art, but actually she's just an out of touch alcoholic who cares about Rose but absolutely does not understand her.
So yeah. Mom is the negligent parent who gets you impractical, extravagant gifts to "make up" for not being there for you in the moment. Bro is the overbearing parent who puts spyware on all your devices and tracks every single thing you do. They both suck and I love them.
i love a good incest ship but daverose is not even really about the incest to me it’s more about like loyalty and sacrifice and being mirrored by another person and having all your flaws reflected back and wanting to die for them anyways and loving them anyway. but obviously dave and rose are a lot about the incest
anyway
if dersecest is bad why do so many bands write songs for it
alpha rose knew they were twins due to the visions but she still let him hit because she’s crazy like that
all alpha dave knows is snort cocaine, fuck his sister, monogrammed sbaj silk pj set
