When you commit to doing something, you make a promise to yourself. And when you break that promise out of laziness, discouragement, or fear, you are only cheating yourself. You are not “getting away with something.” You are only getting away from your own potential. When you commit to making your dream come true, that is the promise you simply decide to never, ever break. It doesn’t matter how many times you get discouraged, or exhausted, or frustrated, you just remember that you have not given yourself the option to quit. That is what commitment is — when the idea of ever stopping your efforts simply doesn’t exist. You have infinite patience and resilience because there is no other option. You have the ability to bear the pain and frustration because you must find a way to beat it. It doesn’t mean it won’t feel hard to press on — it might feel impossible, and yet you still find a way to keep going. You simply always press on. At a certain point, all your effort and energy and power is only directed towards your dream, and you no longer have to waste any energy on trying to motivate yourself to keep going.

Some Tips for University/ College Physics

So @theravenclawstudent requested a post on how I do physics at university, since my major is physics. The undergrad programme at the university I’m at follows the same formula each year - lectures, weekly whiteboard tutorials which are basically problem-solving group work, weekly problem sets and a lab component. There are a few class tests and an exam at the end of each semester.

 I’m going to be quite honest - I don’t do that well at physics. I generally pass my tests and I passed my first semester, but my marks are usually between 50-65% so these are NOT tips on *How* *To* *Ace* *Physics*. This is just what I do in class, how I study physics and some things I learnt being a physics major and some things that I wish I did more often. They’re also things to remember. Here goes:

1) Physics is difficult. It is SO difficult. Accept this fact, stop thinking you’re not smart enough for it and accept that you’re not going to know a LOT. You have to get pushed off the cliff with respect to difficulty at some point, so expect it. Ask questions and work with other people. 

2) Detailed notes on theory isn’t going to help you much. What you need is lots and lots of practice by doing problems. And solid calculus. Calculus needs to be your best friend. Physics at university builds your problem-solving skills and intuition. You’re not going to learn this unless you get a lot of practice.

3) You do need *some* notes and a good textbook. My strategy is to write down whatever my lecturer puts on the blackboard and write, in my own words, whatever he or she says. If there’s a mathematical step in a derivation or worked example that I think I’ll forget, it also gets written down. Equations go in a box with a coloured border. Basically, my notes consist of everything I’ll need when I’m trying to do a problem sheet. Any important theory gets bullet-pointed. I’m posting some of my class notes from my quantum mechanics module below so you can get an idea of what they look like.

4) Use every opportunity to draw a diagram if it will help you understand something better or solve a problem.

5) Do. Worked. Examples. On. Your. Own.

6) Read your textbook the night before.

7) Don’t neglect your lab work. Speak to the TA who marks your lab-work and ask how you can improve your reports. The lab is where you can really score well if you do the work properly. It’s far easier to get a good lab record than a good test record. Take advantage of that and put in the effort.

8) Do your freaking problem sets. Don’t copy question 5 from your friend and don’t copy question 3.2 from the solutions manual you illegally downloaded because it’s 12 p.m. on Sunday evening and you’ve procrastinated all week and now you’re stuck. Attempt the questions yourself, even if you get stuck and have no idea where to start.

9) Use Wolfram Alpha for shitty integrals only if you do actually know how to do the integral. Use Wolfram when it’s tedious, not when it’s difficult.

10) Look at everything as a challenge and an opportunity to learn, rather than something difficult and stressful. 

11) Ask questions. Your lecturers are often more than willing to talk about their work and show off how smart they are. Ask difficult questions and ask stupid questions. Stick your hand up in class or go to the lecturer after class while they’re packing up their stuff or go to his/her office hours. Ask the TAs. Ask your friends. Ask questions.  

12) Enjoy physics.

Instead of giving her more toys I wanted to give my daughter a happy memory. For her 5th birthday, I created a (nearly) 50 meter crazy drinking straw, all over our holiday home. I started building while she was napping on the garden pillows. When she woke up, the straw was hanging in front of her.

It took me a while and when she woke up, it also took her a while to sip from her drink :-) but we had a great time. She especially loved tearing the complete construction down. 

Stop buying your kids crap toys. Believe me, memories last longer than any toy. (except Playmobil, you can never go wrong with Playmobil)

Hi, not to be an asshole but there’s a mistake here. The H2O example for the bent molecule has a hydrogen atom with 2 lone pairs and 2 oxygens attached to it. Should be the other way around. :)

It’s not as simple as that. We didn't stop talking, you stopped talking. There’s a blunt difference. Don’t divert the blame away from the actual problem; you’ve had the tendency to do that, and it stopped surprising me a long time ago.

Whether you’re writing internal assessments for the international baccalaureate or for other lab report requirements for middle/high school programmes, this is for you guys ! The sooner you master the technique of perfecting lab reports, the rest of your science days will be a breeze. Note: These are only recommendations, if your teacher has a report-specific requirements - make sure you follow them to get the best grades !

Aim: State what the lab is about and what scientific concept you’re trying to learn. Provide background information on the subject and mention the scientific objective and purpose behind the investigation.

Research Question: The more focused and detailed this question is, the better. It should involve one or more variables, will the possibility of the question leading to one or more specific, testable hypothesises.

Hypothesis: Should be related to the research question, and it should be a clear statement (not a question). Make sure it is written in future tense and can be tested by one analysis.

Independent Variable: This is the factor you change throughout the experiment. Dependent Variable: This is the factor you measure throughout the experiment. Control Variables: These are the factors you keep constant throughout the experiment. Uncontrolled Variables These are factors you cannot control throughout the experiment, and you only need to acknowledge them and state how they may potentially affect your investigation.

Apparatus : This is the fancy word for the list of equipment you’ll be using. Similar to the research question, this needs to be extremely detailed, as if you were to give this list to a lab technician for them to gather the equipment for you.

Diagram : This is not necessary but may be considered extra credit. It’s used to show the setup of the experiment for personal use or help to give to others.

Method : Similar to the apparatus, this needs to be simple enough to be interpreted by anyone - ask a parent or a friend to identify areas which are unclear. Make sure to include what data processes you’ll generate after raw data collection (e.g. types of graphs, which calculations …) and how you’ll answer your hypothesis at the end (using an evaluation and conclusion).

Results : This is where you’ll display the information generated in raw data tables, graphically or through calculations. Make sure to highlight and summarize the general trends and findings, and title all figures/tables/calculations made. Don’t forget to make sure all axis’ on your graphs are titled, all relevant graphs and units are used and number all figures/tables so you’ll be able to refer back to them in an appropriate fashion in your evaluation and conclusion.

Evaluation : This is where you comment on the methods used in your investigation and mention the weaknesses/errors and subssequent solutions (5-10) if you were to complete the investigation again. Similarly, propose new questions and investigations similar interests which could be carried out.

Conclusion : This is where you comment and interpret on the results obtained, and whether or not you agree with your hypothesis. If possible, try and compare your results with literal results.

Presentation of your report : Make sure the layout of your report is clear and easy to read, and written in a scientific format. If you have font-specific requirements, make sure you follow them too. Don’t forget to process the report to check for grammar and spelling mistakes !
