Earth is ravaged by us, and thus we are ravaged by Earth. We are takers, with far more frequency and malice than we are givers. The land remembers and holds its spite in its soil and snow. The creatures in the sea, strangled by plastics, remember. The tornado upending a town, terrible and beautiful, remembers. The bolt of lightning igniting a mighty brush fire remembers. Devastation is the price we pay for our footprints in the sand. Eventually, we will be left in a place, boundless and bare. It takes a level of sacrifice to maintain even the current symbiosis.

I often dream about lying down in a lush field, sinking into a shallow imprint of my body’s outline, and being swallowed by it. My bones melted like ice, no time to say goodbye. In time, wildflowers will grow in my place and the mice and rabbits rejoice.

The Garden of Hesperides🏛🪴🍊🍎

When the marriage of Zeus & Hera took place, many deities came to celebrate and gave them tons of endless marital gifts. Among them is the old ancestral Gaea, goddess of the earth, bringing the couple with small branches of glowing golden apples, which Hera greatly adored, and politely requested her great-grandmother to plant it within her own gardens, located on the far western reach near Mount Atlas.

For the garden, it was rumored to be in Ibiza of Spanish Balearic Islands, or within the ancient Phoenician ruins of Lixus/Lixos, modern Larache province of Morocco. (Due to the Hesperides were often regarded as “nymphs/goddesses of the far-reach West”, associated with light of the golden dawn, sunset and evening; attended and served ambrosia to many gods/deities in bridal festivities and generally been the treasure-keepers of the gods.)

P/S: On the other side, the small real-life island, Es Vedra in Ibiza - that I also included in the painting- were also rumored to be “home of the enchanting sirens & sea nymphs” in Homer’s Odyssey, but that’s going to be the story for another day.
