AHOY, SAILOR!! ATLANTA, GA
In the land of biscuits, grits, and red-eye gravy, I give you something Sublime. Sublime Doughnuts, in fact. On a crisp early morning, 1/2 of the Dynamic Donut Duo (Paige) joined me to sample the creations of Kamal Grant. Make that 3rd Class Petty Officer Kamal Grant.
Upon graduating from high school, Kamal enlisted in the Navy and served as a baker on the USS John Young. Quickly becoming famous for his cinnamon rolls he parlayed that experience into admission into the CIA. That's right, the CIA- the Culinary Institute of America. From there he continued his education at the American Baking Institute before dropping anchor (rimshot, please!) at Sublime Doughnuts in 2008. So it was that Paige and I found ourselves meeting Atlanta Fox 5's Paul Milliken and his cameraman, Blaze, at the sky blue colored donut shop to spread the gospel of The Sound of Music whilst also taking full advantage of all of Kamal's training. After a tour of the operations, we settled in for our first tastes. Popping to the front was the Fresh Strawberry n Cream. This could have been a disaster - sickeningly sweet and artificial tasting - but it ended up being light, fresh, and DELICIOUS. Nothing syrup-y, just fresh strawberries and homemade whipping cream. Kind of like a strawberry shortcake but with a donut. I almost asked for a second one but before I could I was handed one of their more adventurous edibles, the Salt and Vinegar. Sounds scary? Nah... It's a salted caramel with a drizzle of balsamic over it which cuts the sweetness just so. A really well thought out combination. Soon, we found ourselves on a couch with Paul going on air to talk about the show and about the special donut Kamal made in honor of The Sound of Music. An apple cinnamon strudel type fritter with raisins. And...It was still warm. Amazing. I was on donut #3 for the morning and still went for a fourth after finishing the first fritter. Ridiculous. Verdict: First class donuts from 3rd Class Petty Officer Grant. Great, fresh flavors, and yet another great story behind them. STRONGLY RECOMMENDED!!!
