The Haunting (Robert Wise, 1963) 4/5

Watched this right after finishing Shirley Jackson’s novel though I’m not gonna compare the two lol. I love how the film effectively captures the familiar terror of feeling like you just caught something out of the corner of your eye, the uncertainty of which makes it more interesting than simply seeing something scary outright. There’s so much ingenious framing and camerawork going on here which just affirms the fact that horror films have just been so tragically less creative since then.
