Tumblr is settling with NYC’s human rights agency over alleged porn ban bias

The ban allegedly affected LGBTQ users disproportionately.

Gee, Tumblr would probably really hate it if you shared and spread this damning article … To the surprise of absolutely none of Tumblr’s LGBTQ users, it turns out the independent NYC human rights agency Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) found that Tumblr’s ham-fisted adult content ban in December 2018 disproportionately targeted LGBTQ users. The CCHR’s investigation revealed Tumbler’s moderation algorithms is demonstrably biased against queer content. As part of the settlement, Tumblr was obligated to review their prejudicial anti-gay moderation policies. Even more mortifyingly, they’ve also had to hire an expert on sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) issues and provide unconscious bias training to their moderators. I frankly doubt Tumblr has learned a thing from this humbling experience. Just recently the Tumblr algorithm flagged three ancient posts of mine as violating their terms. All three “offenders” were vintage homoerotic beefcake images (softcore by modern standards) roughly 50 – 65-years-old by Bruce of Los Angeles, Bob Mizer and Tom of Finland. (These are of course pioneering queer artists who routinely faced censorship and imprisonment in the fifties and sixties. Plus ca change!). They've been visible on my page - corrupting viewers -  for years at this point. I appealed all three immediately. Only the Tom of Finland one was approved. The other two are now hidden. So, they haven't learned much. Apparently, Tumblr – who loves to declare how hip, youthful, inclusive and progressive their values are - wants to restore trust with their queer users. I’d recommend we remember their hypocrisy when Pride rolls around and Tumblr splashes rainbow flags everywhere and attempts to pink wash their image.

My number one tip for straight men (I mean, it could conceivably work for other genders and sexualities, but you’d have to adjust it quite a bit) is: inagine they’re a man.

Imagine that you just randomly told some bloke in a pub that he has beautiful eyes.

That you walked up behind your coworker Jim and started caressing his neck and shoulders while talking to him about the budget.

That you just sent a large and unexplained bouquet of flowers to Darren in Accounting.

That instead of complimenting a coworker on her breasts, you complimented him on his dick.

Does the action now seem weird? Uncomfortable? Do you no longer want to do it now that it isn’t directed at somebody you are sexually attracted to?

That strongly suggests that your action has a sexual aspect to it and therefore probably counts as sexual harassment!

I have a large, colorful tattoo on one arm. I’ve had multiple strange men cross a room to tell me how awesome it is, frequently while I’m at work, and it has never made me uncomfortable.

A couple of weeks ago, someone yelled out a car at me ‘I FUCKING LOVE YOUR BOOTS’, which was awesome.

It’s just… it’s really not hard to compliment people in a way that isn’t creepy, if your goal is actually to compliment them and not to slide a ‘btw I’m thinking about fucking you’ under the radar.

I’m just going to say this here so people aren’t concerned.

I am a writer and actor. I am based in the UK and Ireland.

We are not currently striking.

We are being affected by the strikes, there’s certainly not as many jobs around, but we aren’t striking.

If I take a UK-production company job, I am not scabbing.

We have different unions. There are actors represented by both Equity and SAG-AFTRA, but I am not one of them.

(I’m actually not even in Equity yet, I’ve only just earned enough to be accepted and I can’t afford the membership fee at this moment)

We are not allowed to strike in the UK. We have terrible anti-strike laws. We are also being screwed over a lot, but I’m hoping if WGA and SAG-AFTRA succeed we might get some trickle down help.

It’d be totally different if I took an American based job, which I won’t because I want the writers and actors to break the big studios.

Support the strikes, but please remember not everyone is American.
