I have had to sculpt swords a few times and when you do it in clay, I end up having to constantly fix it after bumping it. So this time I carved it from balsa wood as part of an upcoming project. Here we are taking the bronze sculpture, Lilith, and making the ceramic shell mold. We have dipped the wax in the last video in a ceramic slurry and waited for it to set up. Now we are going to submerge it in a clay and sand powdered mix. We get it coated by blowing compressed air up through the powder. After multiple cycles of this it will be ready to bake in an autoclave to cure the mold and melt the wax out to make room for the molten bronze. #art #bronzesculpture #fantasysculpture #lilith #sculpture

Here they are building up the mold for Lilith using a ceramic slurry. They will dip the wax casting in various coarseness of slurry until it builds up a strong enough mold to take the molten bronze. Here’s a step by step process of a piece I finished in 2013 entitled Sorceress. I ended up doing quite a bit more work afterwards, but this chronicles the first couple of hours of work. Here we are applying ferric nitrate to my bronze sculpture, Lilith. Ferric must be applied hot, hence the propane torch in the background. Here’s a mermaid sculpture I did entitled Flight of the Merrow. This piece was inspired from several sources and involved a couple of different models. The pose was taken from a photo of someone who decided they were going to be a mermaid for the day. The arms are swept back with the serratus anterior flexed suggested she is arresting her movement. With her head looking to the side, perhaps she is slowing to view something that first escaped her notice. This is one of my favorite pieces. Afterwards I made another version where she has a top on.
