This is actually A+ cat management. “Mirroring” is a big thing with cats. It’s why they will lay in similar positions several feet apart, or will come and try to do things when you do them. It’s a sign that they love you and want to show. This cat wants to be close to its owner, and also wants to do what its owner is doing, to be involved in some way. Giving them their own thing to use is a really great way to redirect them and allow them to mirror the behavior in a non-disruptive way that frustrates neither party. This is a GOOD IDEA.

Fascinating: this explains why Kasha, Bubble and Squeak hung out with me on my desk (when an 18lb / 8kg+ Skogkatt hangs out on your desk, you notice), or in the box beside my desk that the old dot-matrix printer’s punch “periphery” went in (there was a constant background white noise of fiffle-fiffle-fiffle even when they were sleeping).

Where Bubble was concerned, she hung out right on and partly in the new inkjet printer, whose recess at the top was an even better fit when she was smaller.

They were my cats rather than @dduane‘s cats, who were Lilith, Beemer and Goodman, and who perched themselves on the top shelf of her desk, not only people proximity but the additional cat advantage of looking down on everyone.

My last cat was owned by my friend's Trekkie uncle who passed very suddenly in a car crash. The family just couldn't take him and asked me to possibly foster him until they could. I almost immediately adopted him.

I would set my computer to play a video for him when I left for work. He got mad if it wasn't star trek. He learned to hit the spacebar to pause and start it.

I am and have always been a Trekkie. One time I was having a shit day bc I was in the middle of MCAS starting to kick my butt and I was just crying on my couch. He hopped onto the table and started star trek for me

Then he just stared at me like "did that work?"

And this was his staring face so yes of course it did

But I'm forever amused that I shared needing the same comfort show, with a cat
