Little wren, far from home
Aight, so a suspect has been caught. In the next couple of days we’re going to be bombarded with a cavalcade of information about Luigi Mangione. As we start this period I want everyone to remember:
The killer--whether he is Mangione or another man--is a living, breathing, human being. He has followed people you don’t like, held beliefs you disagree with, and possibly voting for politicians you think suck.
He still shot a man with the blood of millions on his hands. He still caused an outpouring of rage that caused BCBS to roll back its ghoulish anesthesia policy.
Carve that into your fucking minds. Mass media is about to do its damnedest to remind us to hate each other, not the top .001%. Do not let them do this. Y’all understand what I’m saying? Here, lemme spell it out more clearly:
DO NOT FUCKING PURITY TEST THIS GUY, ASSHOLES!!
And if you see people fixating on his purity over the message he sent, call them out on it.
We have lost again and again and again on healthcare because we keep letting the rich divide us. Remember: the people united will never be defeated.
Edit: A couple of people have asked me to not convict Mangione in my post, and they're right. Mangione has been arrested on gun charges, not for the murder, and regardless of the charge he obviously hasn't been convicted yet. It's too soon to lay Brian Thompson on his head. I've modified the post to reflect that.
That said, what I've said here applies to whoever the killer is. As the media circus plays out, a lot of talking heads will be pulling out all stops to remind us to hate each other, not the insurance CEOs. Do not fall for their tricks!
Ignoring the real possibility he intentionally let himself be caught from the little we know so far Luigi Mangione's case is a fascinating combination of astonishing brilliance and confusing stupidity. This young man plans and executes his assassination and escape with such a meticulous care and calmness that it's suspected that he's a professional hitman. He comes up with Riddler-sque moves like writing his manifesto poetically on the bullets and leaving his backpack behind full of Monopoly money. He carefully wears a mask to avoid being identified but removes it because a woman who was checking him into the hostel was flirting with him and wanted to see his smile. He still manages to escape the most surveilled city in the country in the midst of ongoing national manhunt only to get caught in the middle of bumfuck nowhere Pennsylvania while eating at the McDonalds. Because for some reason he had the same clothes and mask as in New York and was carrying the same gun and suppressor. And when the cops detained him he showed them the same fake id he used in New York. And oh yeah he's a frat bro gym rat who has a masters degree in computer science from Penn but reads stupid self-help books about being on the grind and is 'anti-woke' while being bisexual suffering from anxiety and wanting to end oppressive capitalism. Not even god himself could invent a person like this
The creature who fell in love with the light
[Watercolor and gouache, based on ‘The Fog Horn’ by Ray Bradbury]
Something I find very interesting about this CEO assassination is that the guy who did it has basically become an American hero.
They're probably quite worried about what will happen when they catch this guy, especially with the level of public support he has. If they catch him alive and he gets to air his grievances, he could unite the entire country against the private healthcare system. It could go to trial and result in jury nullification, which would basically send a message to the American public that catching a rich body comes without consquences.
If they kill him to keep his mouth shut, I'd say people will burn cities to the ground, and it could potentially provoke even more anger against private health insurance. In a powder keg, it only takes one person lighting the match.
I know it sounds over the top, but a figurehead is a powerful thing, and that's what this shooter is. The rich understand it. That's why Blue Cross just magically decided they were going to pay for anesthesia again. Those dead-eyed psychopaths were going to take everything they could until someone shot that guy and that's the gospel truth.
Keep the hate fire burning. Watching their fear is the closest I've come to knowing joy since the Bush administration.

“you will never be too much for someone who can’t get enough of you”
— Unknown
Jane Austen, Emma
" "My God, you have lost it." I'm stung, but I don't release his wrist. I'm tired of people telling me I'm unhinged. I know when something is wrong; it's not my fault no one else does."
"The gun safe is locked. There is no one here. I try to breathe relief but I can't. There isn't a smell, but there is something stronger, like my body instinctually is tuned to a frequency, a knowing without knowing why. So even though I tell myself I'm being paranoid, letting myself get carried away again, the way Jed warned me I do too often, I know now, in a way I only thought I knew before, that something is wrong."
"I watch him fade into the night. And I'm all mixed up. I don't know who I am or where I'm going. And I wish I could follow him into the dark."
"All the missing women, and the story ends the same way. The story ends when people stop looking, when they stop searching, when no more evidence is found. I won't let your story end that way. I won't let my story end that way. I won't give up. I won't stop looking. If Jed is right, if I'm looking for you because I'm lost too, then finding you will save you and me both. I still have my list of names. I still have Clementine. I think of what she said about you, that you were friends when you were young, when everyone was friends. Tasia said that same thing, and I think how alike we are in our aloneness. I think that no one would look for me if I disappeared. But then I think you might."
"We were twinshoots sprouting beautifully on a tree. When our branches spread, our shade stretched and our buds flushed, but time snapped my other shoot."
-poet unknown. Written on her brother's death, according to some sources, or her husband according to others. I think this seems more likely to have been written for a cherished sibling "twinshoots" sprouting from the same tree. Though I can see the argument for a lover as well.
