you are more than your hearing

Watch: Nyle DiMarco reminds voters what’s at stake on election day for people with disabilities
[Nyle DiMarco signing] You can keep this ad muted if you want and keep scrolling past it. But if you’re still listening to my voice, please know that there are a lot of people out there without one. Among the 50 million Americans living with a disability, many don’t have the ability to work, to travel, or to do countless other things you might take for granted. So this November, please consider voting for the only candidate with a plan to change that.
Since I’ve started my uni course (Deaf studies and BSL) I’ll post more on here. Sorry I’ve not been as active over summer!
So far I’m loving the course! I’m finding it easy to pick up sign language again too ;u;
There’s so much reading involved and there’s a lot on the Deaf Community so I think it will be useful for me to get back into this blog :)
Another update on my uni life that no one asked for again…
Most lessons are taught in sign language and I keep sitting on the wrong side of the voice overs/interpreters! It means I have to catch up later (thanks to a transcript note taker, my life saver!)
I got taught the sign for “trans” and I’m in love with it
I got moved into a higher level BSL class and the teacher signs so fast I cry internally
I found out that ASL is actually based on French Sign Language and NOT British Sign Language and my entire life has changed
@leadermon cutely introduced herself to one of my lecturers in BSL and it was adorable. (And the lecturer was so happy she put her books down to introduce herself back)
Everyone is cool with me being trans. My lecturers are even asking me about it (but I don’t know enough sign language to really fully explain)
I use the boys bathroom now! Men are disgusting nobody washes their hands I’m repulsed by men
I accidentally told my lecturer that my mum is dead due to a language misunderstanding oops
TOO MUCH WORK
One time I knocked on the door of my deaf lecturer and had to take a moment to think about how much of an idiot I am before going back and getting his attention visually
I’m really tired of people telling me I can hear enough to not call myself “deaf” or that I can hear enough to function and get through life easily without help.
I’m tired of “You don’t need captions, just listen harder.”
I’m tired of “You can talk, so how can you be deaf?”
I’m tired of “You don’t need to sign because you can hear.”
I shouldn’t have to justify why I need or do certain things because they don’t match up with your idea of what it means to be deaf or hard of hearing.
If you want to be an ally to disabled people, do not complain about accessibility features.
Do not complain about captions
Do not complain about ramps or hand railings
Do not complain about accessible seating
Do not complain about trigger warnings
Do not complain about large font
Do not complain about accessibility features!
I need hearing people to stop writing, “You don’t need subtitles in your videos. I understood you just fine.” in my YouTube comments.
When hearing people think they can relate to you because they couldn’t hear their friends one time in a busy cafe........
calling all d/Deaf, Deaf-Blind, and Hard of Hearing folks! What do YOU want out of your community resource center?
I work at an American d/Deaf, Deaf-Blind, and HoH resource center with a 30 years-long history of engagement with and dedication to these communities that they serve. Our organization was started by d/Deaf and HoH folks, and it’s been run and supported by d/Deaf and HoH folks ever since, with partnership from local Deaf-Blind groups, on an entirely nonprofit basis. We’re not direct services in the usual sense - we don’t give money, rent/job assistance, or legal services - but we have an in-house interpreter program and weeknight ASL courses, and we focus on giving folks resources and information (adaptive technology, rights under the ADA, regional health, financial, and social resources, etc.).
However, as our older members are starting to drop out due to age, we’re looking for ways to expand our programming, with a particular emphasis on meeting the needs of teens, young adults, and adults 25-40. We’re especially interested in providing resources for intersectional d/Deaf, HoH, and Deaf-Blind communities; multiply disabled d/Deaf, HoH, and Deaf-Blind folks; possibly immigrant d/Deaf, HoH, and Deaf-Blind folks (a big project, since to our knowledge that population has been addressed… well, never); and anyone else who feels like they aren’t getting the resources and support that they need in the existing d/Deaf, HoH, and Deaf-Blind communities. We’re also looking to expand our programming into what I would call “soft resources” - social events, support groups, affinity group get-togethers, etc.
If you are d/Deaf, Hard of Hearing, or Deaf-Blind and take 5-10 minutes to fill out our survey here, and then reblog this post, it would mean the world to us.
If you are Hearing, please help us signal boost this survey so that we get as many responses as possible!
I can’t tell you the amount of times I’ve been told I’m privileged because I’m deaf, because it means I have a note taker in class.
I hate to inform you, but I have a note taker because I can’t hear very well.
“Why don’t you just ask the teacher to repeat themselves?” they ask. Well okay. I’ll do that instead. About 60% of the class time will be used up of me asking the teacher to repeat themselves.
Notes are important, and I write down everything I hear, but I miss a lot. The note taker is there to write down the notes that I miss. Without the note taker, I would fail the class. So instead of saying I’m privileged, consider the fact that you can hear most of what the teacher is saying, so you can take your own notes. I can’t.
What grinds my gears #2
What is up with some hearing people that expect you to pay attention to almost everything that relates to sound?
For example,
Hearing person knocks on my door then gets annoyed that I don’t hear it. Well I do have other methods to get my attention; people get ticked that I don’t hear the door or them coming in the house or something ( I have other methods for a reason!)
I can’t pay attention to everything sound related even I could try ( even if I did had my hearing aids). It ticks me off if people get annoyed asking me “ Didn’t hear that?”
No. If I did I would come over, but don’t get ticked if I couldn’t hear it. I could be doing something or anything that could block me hearing it. If I’m close to a room, then I can hear the sound. If I’m not there, I can’t hear it so don’t assume that I ignoring you.
Stop asking me that question and don’t assume just because we (d/Deaf/HOH people) hear some sounds, does not mean we can hear every single sound around us.
3 Ways To Caption Your Videos! [CC]
This video is one that I’ve done many times before, but I wanted to do an updated version with better technology, location, and all the methods into one video! That way, you don’t have to go to multiple videos to learn all the steps. A huge thank you to YouTube Space NY for letting me be a part of NextUp 2016!
As always, reblogs are appreciated as they help support my channel and if you want to support my channel in other ways, consider pledging on Patreon here.

Noticed this on one of Ren’s videos. This is so sad. Actual members of the deaf community tearing down the way other people identify :(
“Wearing a hearing aid does not means" deaf", its “hard of hearing”. If you can hear with hearing aid, you are not deaf. I do not understand why the person in this video calls herself “deaf” unless she referring to being a member of Deaf community. Or she is a person who usually chooses not to wear hearing aid. Or why she wears hearing aid at all if she is deaf? I’m hard of hearing and wear hearing aid only on my right ear. Im 100% deaf on left 72% on my right. Hearing aid help me to hear what is around me. “
I know this is the saddest part of learning about the deaf community. People need to butt out of how people should identify ( That is why I do not tell people how they identify when they ask me and leave it up to them). Hearing aids are not cures ( nor CI are either). It takes a lot of work to learn how to hear. It never perfect and hearing aid users are not “ hearing people” nor we will ever be. Comments like this are reason why a lot of mainstream people are talking about “ The Middle’ thing. I feel the more we discuss things like this, better people will learn there are shades of deafness.
