YOUNG MAN
Okay a lil PSA
I've seen many people handle their records wrong and it drives me crazy, so here are some tips if you're just starting out.
For the love of God, DON'T HOLD YOUR RECORDS LIKE THIS
If you touch the record grooves, the oils from your hands will transfer and damage the record. (also I'm not actually touching it but you get my point - never touch!!)
Instead, hold it like this (if you have a 7" single):
Like this (for the Big Bois™):
Or this (if you're using two hands):
Always hold your record by the edges, NEVER touch the grooves!
DON'T STACK YOUR RECORDS!!!
If I see one more instagrammy hipster kid do this I'm gonna scream. Stacking your records over a long period of time will cause the records to warp and bend. It's worse if you have heavier records that albums get pressed on nowadays, as they are so heavy when stacked together.
Instead store your records on a shelf like this:
Or in a box where they fit nicely.
DON'T PUT YOUR RECORD PLAYER ON YOUR BED DAMMIT!!
This is something I've come across on sites like Pinterest and We Heart It. If you do this, stop. Record players need a stable surface so that the record can spin normally and produce a good sound. A bed is a very wobbly place and IS NOT IDEAL TO PUT A RECORD PLAYER ON! I know ya'll like pretty aesthetic pictures, but don't go ruining your record players for it.
That's all I had. Thank you for listening
I would like to add just a couple of things!
For the love of all that is good, keep your needle clean. My turntable has a lovely dust cover which I keep closed 25/8 (except when putting a record on ofc) but my house is so drafty and dusty that it gets on my records anyway, and will clog up the stylus. If you see any lint, gently pull it off, but don't touch the stylus. If you can't get it off without touching, use a very soft, very clean brush to GENTLY®™ brush it off.
Don't over-clean your records! If some dust gathers, just blow it off. You only need to clean them if they become unplayable. Cleaning them too much will also ruin the grooves.
When you want to stop playing mid-song, DON'T just grab and rip the arm away. My sister does this and she KNOWS better and it drives me NUTS. I've never seen a turntable without some sort of lift mechanism, be it a lever near the base of the arm or a button like my automatic one has.
(btw @moustachefreddie you got a nice little collection going there!)
Wonderful addition, @lickthemagaindeacy!
((and thank you, I low-key wanted to show off my collection gkgngn might do that soon))
Another point that was kind of covered by the bed thing, but if you jump hard on the floor (especially one like mine that's old and uneven), nudge/strike whatever surface your player is on or move it whilst it's spinning then the needle WILL skip and that can scratch or damage the grooves (much like a dust build up). Even if it doesn't it's still very frightening so don't do it lads!
I'm crying again. 😭💔

The fact that Mr John Richard Deacon, bassist of Queen and writer of the iconic banger ‘Backchat,’ owned a “I’m with this idiot” t-shirt circa 1982 and somehow apparently didn’t manage to get photographed with the finger on the shirt pointing on either of his bandmates, is quite frankly very disappointing.
Wait, WHAT?!
looks like he ALMOST GOT IM before he got caught
Gosh darn it to heck and tarnation
Okay I don’t remember ever reading this post, let alone reblogging it, but apparently I did and now there’s a photo?! How did I not realize this existed?!
