dean and cas would just show up with rings on their ring fingers one day and not tell anyone anything. sam tries to ask so many time what’s up with the rings, or where they came from, but anytime he tries to ask, they get attacked by the creature of the week they’re chasing, or they find some new information for the case they’re working on and off they go chasing the next lead. dean and cas keep sharing these secret little looks, and sam gets the feeling he’s missing something important, but he just can’t figure out what it is. the ball finally drops five days later when they’re in the library researching and sam asks dean a question about the case. dean looks up at sam, raises an eyebrow, and shrugs. “I don’t know, go ask my husband,” dean says, nodding his head towards the war room where cas is sitting with jack, hunched over a book together. sam sighs, gets up, walks half way across the room before he stutters to a stop. “wait, your- your husband?” sam asks in shock, the words finally registering in his head. dean smiles, eyes locking with cas’ across the room, and cas all but melts as he smiles back at dean
