this boys escaped from an unspeakable horror, silence both a reflection of how little he knew about the world and how scared he was. terrified into silence, hesitant to trust. adults had never been good to him, had never shown him kindness. this man may be nice so far, but fear still lingers. he doesn’t know what a paramedic is, but he understands the next part. jim helps people. it was clear that he was in need of help, even if he didn’t know how to show it. being given a name leads to attempting to share his own name: arm held out, burned hands on display, the tattoo on his wrist brandishing him 002 held out for jim to see.
he’s taken back , burned hands . . scars layered over others. was this ? was that his name ? the number two has been tattooed on his skin. he almost feels queasy , upset . . . he didn’t know the full story. either , he was running away from mistreatment by family or a facility. jim knew he wasn’t the proper authority to deal with a sensitive situation like this but right now , he must be feeling all sorts of things. no words , just actions . . well , hopefully he’ll take his words as a saving grace ‘ okay, two --- we’ll would you like to come with me somewhere warm ? you know, until we figure out what to do next ? ’ he’s pretty sure his four legged friend was done for the night. she’d given up, laying completely back down, a soft exhale as the two exchanged looks.
