headcanon:   object symbolism in happy death day   ( please don’t reblog! )

so a big part of the plot of happy death day is that tree is stuck in a time loop and is forced to relive the same day, over and over, until she finds out who’s trying to kill her and stops them. the director has said that he’s left clues in the movie  ( hidden in plain sight )  that set up a sequel that will explain why/how she’s stuck in the loop; so here are my ideas and speculations.  ( spoiler alert for anyone who hasn’t seen the movie! )

the birthday candle.   tree and her mom’s tradition was to always have one candle on their shared birthday cake and they’d blow it out together; this tradition continued up until her mom passed, upsettingly, on tree’s nineteenth birthday. in the movie, every time tree is given the cupcake by lori, she always blows out the candle  ( in some way )  but never eats the cupcake. this can be interpreted as tree’s mother, from beyond the grave, protecting tree from imminent danger, specifically on her birthday. the only holes here are that tree isn’t always seen blowing out the candle, or the candle isn’t always seen being blown out; the day that she makes a run for it from the hospital and is later blown up in the cop car, she isn’t given the cupcake—however, the candle is the catalyst for tree getting blown up. and while tree isn’t given a cupcake on the day she personally hits hard reset, she’s the one who takes her own life—not lori, and not john tombs.

the bracelet.   the last gift tree received from her mother before she died. landon indicated somewhere that one of the clues/‘main’ clue involves carter/is in carter’s room in the movie. there is special focus on tree’s bracelet in the movie, with various close-up shots as well as carter continually finding tree on campus  ( usually at her sorority house meeting )  and giving her the bracelet back. the maternal protection motif is still in play here; it’s implied tree wears this bracelet all the time, and even though she does forget it nearly every loop  ( murder montage is exactly what you’d think it’d be )  carter almost always brings it back to her. at one point  ( the first loop ), after carter runs into tree, he apologizes for getting chocolate milk spilled on her and she pulls him aside, holding her hand out and shortly after asking for her bracelet back—so while she does, at times, forget her bracelet, she always ends up getting it back. in the final loop, when lori is revealed to be the killer, tree doesn’t get the bracelet back until after she fights lori off and kills her; one of the last scenes in the movie is of her and carter, in the diner, where they discuss everything that happened and he gives her back her bracelet. if this theory  ( which also has holes in it, but hey, it’s only a theory )  holds, it’s heavily implied that had tree been killed, it would’ve been permanent that time.

               this is a lost cause.  office hours as a whole? to the girl she was three deaths days ago, without a doubt; she avoided communication with faculty as much as she could, professor butler being the rare exception. her mind is elsewhere as she trudges through franklin hall, bags under eyes barely-concealed, eyeliner smudged, lipstick a mess---all the markings of a party girl too something-or-other to clean herself up. in Tree’s case, she can’t shake the feeling that she’s being chased around in an endless circle. the stinging feeling in her side and the gentle throb emanating from her temples are pushed aside as she concentrates.  room 121G. where the hell was it? bayfield’s history department couldn’t possibly be that---

                    it almost slips past her, but the gentle hum of 80s synth rock is hard to miss.   ‘   PROFESSOR MCFLY?   ’   cue the first, second, third rap of her knuckles against the propped-open door as she leans in the doorway, not bothering to try and seem casual at this point. like it even matters.   ‘   do you have a minute? in honor of mother’s day i’m here to remind you that tree’s mother’s death hit her so hard that she became a shell of the person she was, turning to excessive drinking and partying to cope, blowing off her studies, sleeping around with one of her professors, generally just not giving a shit about anything or anyone but herself, and she doesn’t talk to ANYONE about it, so if you ever happen to be lucky enough for her to divulge anything about her mom/their relationship, she trusts you---consider yourself lucky.
