AJ sat alone at the bar on the bottom floor of The Limelight, drink in hand; thinking about what the best move to make next was. They had sent the video to his father which he was confident would buy them some time, but what now? He didnât have a clue. He was trying to come up with anything when he heard the door to the club open and in walked Cedric Cross.
âEvening, Adrian,â when AJ didnât greet him back Cedric spoke up again, âis the boss around?â He motioned vaguely with a hand towards Romanâs room and mumbled,âupstairs.â The man in the suit looked up at the room, but made no attempt to actually head up there. âBy the way, I watched your video. It certainly caused a commotion with the higher ups. The group is undoubtedly viewed as a threat now.â There was a brief pause before the man continued. âAlthough, I canât even begin to fathom where the plan is going from here. Surely you arenât planning on being beaten like that often in order to show them that you are still alive?â
AJ flinched, he hadnât even thought about needing to do that. Cedric said nothing for a bit, but the man couldnât help but feel like he was looking right through him. âWord on the rumor mill is that there will be a rescue mission soon. Mr Mayor seems to want his precious baby boy back safe, sound, and promptly.â Phoenix felt his eyes widen. So soon? He found himself wondering, but instantly shook it off. Of course it would be this soon. Damn it, are they ready for this?
The journalist continued interrupting AJâs panicked thoughts. âGood news for you though, theyâre keeping the video low profile. If it was released to the public I doubt they would easily believe anything the group says in the future, the city could use it as proof that itâs just some radical gang of thugs kidnapping an innocent person because of who his father is. The citizens there would believe that too, you know how beloved the little mayorâs son is in that city, Iâm sure theyâd be behind any awful thing the mayor decided to do to this place. Luckily though theyâre not doing that. Iâm certain that he doesnât want to embarrass his family, not to mention if the mayorâs son can be kidnapped, anybody in the city could be. No one would be safe and thatâs the opposite of the type of press he wants.â
AJ listened to what Cedric was saying and, despite the âgood newsâ he found himself beginning to question whether he made the right move at all. âWas I wrong? If that wasnât what I should have done, then what was?â The question was more to himself then to Cross, but the other man responded anyway. âAdrian, this place was dealt a bad hand. That man has started the game with better cards, more chips, and the dealer in his pocket. Youâve only just barely managed to bluff enough to keep yourself afloat. Itâs going to be a long; rough game and lingering on past choices will only cloud your judgement further. You need to think ahead, not backwards, otherwise you will lose.â
That response annoyed him, âif weâre so bad off then why are you backing us up?â A brilliant smile appeared on the other manâs face. âBecause I enjoy gambling, Iâm quite good at it too. Remember the casino cruise to Nassu?â AJ didnât respond, so Cedric continued. âSeriously though, Adrian, Iâd say the outcomeâs not set in stone yet. Once you get enough information on your opponents, the right amount of support, and the backbone to go all in, you can pull the card from your sleeve and turn the game upside down.â He paused briefly then shrugged, âthat is, of course, if you are even able to work up the nerve to use the trump card at all.â
âIf youâve got something to say, just come out with it. I donât feel like deciphering metaphors tonight.â The man in the suit was quick to retort, âOh? How odd. I thought youâve always been fond of metaphors,â he shrugged, âjust think on it, I have more pressing matters to attend to tonight.â With that he flashed a smile that royally pissed AJ off; walked up the stairs and knocked on Romanâs door.
With his elbow on the bar table, AJ placed his forehead in his hand and mumbled quietly to himself. âGodâŚI hate that guy.â Although he had to admit his tip was useful and he did make one valid point. They needed more information. He suddenly remembered an old friend of his from school. âWonder where she is?â AJ asked aloud, taking a sip of the drink in front of him.
