hurriedly, she smooths a hand over it. he knocks again.    ❝   i’m still changing!  ❞    excitement colors her cheeks a fetching shade of red, and she does her best to find her day dress from the heaps of costumes littering the dressing room.

he’s struck with the sudden and childish desire to say something silly ,  like ask if she requires assistance changing.   he bites his tongue with a secret boyish smile ,  not because he thinks christine wouldn’t find it funny ,  but because he suspects those passing by him would ,  and the inevitable gossip about the vicomte making dirty jokes to his lover would get back to phillipe.   raoul would rather spare himself another lecture.

glancing down at his pocket watch ( an old brass thing ,  a relic of his ancient long-deceased uncle’s navy days ) ,  raoul is acutely aware that they are running at least seven minutes late.   he’s once again struck with the desire to ask if she needs assistance but with thoroughly honourable intentions   --   christine needs to get a move on and the restaurant will not hold their table.          ‘   how  long  do  you  think  you’ll  need   ??   the  carriage  is  ready  for  us  and  I  don’t  really  want  to  keep  the  driver  waiting  for  much  longer.   the  poor  man  is  out  in  the  snow.   ’          his voice is soft ,  as it always is around her.   she smooths out the cracks in his mind.

went to the palais garnier the other day and the chief of the flies was yelling about ‘the opera ghost’ and christine daae left the stage while security escorted him outside and I heard a gunshot but when christine daae came back onstage a mysterious disembodied voice said it was unrelated

𝚟𝚎𝚛𝚋𝚊𝚕 𝚘𝚛 𝚗𝚘𝚗-𝚟𝚎𝚛𝚋𝚊𝚕 𝚌𝚘𝚖𝚖𝚞𝚗𝚒𝚌𝚊𝚝𝚒𝚘𝚗.

raoul is a very reserved person ,  and such is normally pretty quiet ,  not engaging in group conversations any more than would be considered impolite.   this is generally not greatly noticed as he is normally accompanied by phillipe ,  who is the total opposite of this and can very easily hold a conversation with anyone he meets.   thankfully for raoul ,  phillipe being an expert conversationalist usually means he does not have to do too much talking.   the only exceptions to this rule in terms of raoul’s conversational abilities are his immediate family ( phillipe ,  his sisters ,  their husbands ,  his neices and nephews ) ,  a small handful of friends from his naval days ,  the late gustave daae ,  and of course ,  christine.

𝚍𝚎𝚜𝚌𝚛𝚒𝚋𝚎 𝚢𝚘𝚞𝚛 𝚖𝚞𝚜𝚎'𝚜 𝚕𝚊𝚞𝚐𝚑.

raoul’s laugh ,  his true laugh ,  is one of the loveliest sounds you could ever hear.   made all the more lovelier by how little he is able to actually laugh like this.   it’s loud and glowing and sunny and absolutely lifts the heart of anyone who hears it.   the sort of laughter where the person throws their head back in absolute delight.   not like the laughter reserved for polite society ,  parties and dinners ,  a soft chuckle when some very distant friend of a relation makes an unfunny joke ,  a polite restrained hum when watching some new production of an opera buffa in a box where he is constantly visible.

𝚎𝚊𝚝𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚑𝚊𝚋𝚒𝚝𝚜.

( this is all post-navy: sailors ate what they were given which was mainly biscuits and boiled salt meat ,  I’ve been unable to find research that suggests the french naval sailors had anything other than the standard weekly diet for a sailor. )  two things to remember:   raoul is an aristocrat and raoul is muscley.   he goes to a lot of fancy dinners and catered social events and fancy rich people eat fancy rich food.   he is muscley and fit and therefore his main focus in regards to his diet is meat ,  balanced with vegetables.   however he’ll pretty much eat anything in moderation ,  and would not restrict himself from the occasional sweet.   generally he does not deviate much from the schedule of mealtimes ,  only very occasionally snacking between meals.   he does drink alcohol pretty frequently because again ,  rich aristocrat.

raoul’s pretty boring.   I feel bad saying it but it’s true.   he enjoys reading a little ,  he definitely has a passion for consuming the arts ,  hence his patronage of the garnier.   is work a hobby ?   keeping up a respectable reputation for the sake of the family name ?   buying christine daae a ridiculous amount of flowers ? hunting the mysterious opera ghost who wants to drain your wallet ?   raoul is twenty one during the events of phantom ,  he’s just come from serving in the navy which he joined the moment he could ,  he’s very much still figuring himself out.   he absolutely loves anything on the water ,  sailing in particular ,  but living in paris means he doesn’t get to do that as much as he would like.

as mentioned before ,  raoul is a very skilled sailor ,  with everything that comes with that.   he is also a very skilled leader ,  very capable of organising and leading a team when necessary.  he also has a unique sense of intuition.
