slavic whispers - strzyga
the whole household wept with joy when she was born. her mother was too weak to hold her in her arms, but she cried with happiness too. the storm outside wouldn’t ease for many days to come.
people from the village kept coming to see the little girl. they brought gifts and good word, and they watched as she got stronger and as she grew. the first snow fell, and the horses in the stables were restless.
the nights were long and there was no sleep in the cottage. she would cry and cry, and her mother would do all she could to ease the pain in her gums. nature has its way. the pain stopped, and two pearly teeth were shining in the always smiling mouth. ice from the mountains started melting and the streams were wild.
spring came, and with it the storks returned to their high nests. they would bring spirits with them, and then they would leave again, carrying the souls of good people to paradise. the girl was strong and healthy, and the family was happy.
before the birds left their nests, she started crying again. her mother was helpless and her father worried. the forest was dead and dark.
and soon they knew. there was no joy and no light in their home, no smile upon their faces. only the little girl would smile, even when her mother wrapped her in plain woolen blanket. she’d joyfully clench her little fists around her father’s beard when he carried her to the forest. and she’d laugh even while on the cold ground, alone and cold and left to die, showing her tiny white teeth.
two rows of sharp teeth.
they say a strzyga has two souls as well, two hearts, two natures. let the forest swallow her while she’s still innocent. let the storks carry her to the paradise twice.
Biomechanical, inspired by one of H.R.Giger’s work.

Each of my paintings is deeply unique and emerges through its own process. I start with an expressive act of covering the canvas with several layers of acrylic paint and then scratching it off. I repeat this process many times. I do not plan my images in advance and try to stay present and as detached as possible from the result. In doing this I am able to express my unconscious mind, the part of me that has not been processed by logic. I then react to this abstract and expressive atmosphere, by searching for the elements that have emerged, possibly in pockets of light, or the foundations of a landscape. In this way each painting shows me its singular identity.
