There's something to be said about how Kyle, Jay-Den and Darem each represent three different journeys/stages of queer self-acceptance. Kyle seems secure in himself, flirts openly and does not alter his personality even to fit in with the other War College cadets. Jay-Den always felt like his family couldn't accept him, and he had to leave them behind to pursue his own life. Now he is starting his personal journey of accepting himself and gaining confidence. And Darem is still letting the pressure from outside to control him. He lashes out at Jay-Den because he can't imagine abandoning his social role as Jay-Den did, and he is also envious of Jay-Den and Kyle because they are experiencing the sort of joy and freedom he wishes he could experience. It's not just jealousy about Jay-Den dating someone else, I think he is jealous that Jay-Den had the confidence to choose to be himself and chase after the future that he wants, whilst Darem has been unable to (until now).

Obviously this is metaphorical, as sexuality is not an issue in-universe, but I think it's an intentional allegory. And it's making me cry rn btw.

I did not expect to care as much about B'Avi as I do... But this episode made me realise that these are just college students. He joined the War College because he read a comic book and was impressed by Starfleet. He's a nerd who wanted to be like his comic book characters, a nerd who knows Spock quotes by heart. He wanted to succeed and become like his heroes. But because Nus Braka wanted to steal some Starfleet tech, he's dead now. And the War College/Starfleet Academy beef doesn't seem very important anymore.

I can't wait to see how the characters process all this.
