i dont understand ever needing a specific thing for a spell.
use something else? or tweak ur intention? come at the problem from a different angle?
like do u need X for a money spell? can you change customize the whole format of the spell? or can you do a different spell to attract discounts and gifts? thinking outside the box type strategy
i mean if ur following a specific spell then yeah its hard to tweak but like what iffff.....u made a spell.....from scratch......perchance👀
if humans know one thing its doing what they can w what they have. and limits force you to get creative
you gotta learn to get a little janky sometimes✋you dont have x for your abundance spell, thats fine how about a bobby pin. a blade of grass. a carpet beetle/mosquito/common bug. do those not show up in abundance around you

i hate when the only advice ppl have is "if you cant afford x just wait until you can" like no there r options. if u cant afford cinnamon rolls get some cinnamon, sugar, butter, and white bread from ur pantry come on there is always a way. just because a butter knife is for slicing doesnt mean it cant sometimes act as a flat head screwdriver. they say when u change ur perspective--
I think too many newer practitioners are under the impression that just because a spell or correspondence is written down in a book or popular online means that that is the only way to do said spell or the only "correct" correspondence
There aren't really any rules to witchcraft and most written spells are written because they worked for the person who wrote it down, but a lot of those practitioners expect for you to modify or tweak the spell to your needs and based on what you have available
There are so many good substitutions and I personally feel that changing a component of a spell or something about a spell to make it your own gives it a bit more power
I have almost never used someone else's spell through my 7+ years of practice because most of the time I found that they just didn't quite fit my personal practice or I didn't have access to a specific herb or crystal or something I've used others' spells as inspiration for my own, but I mostly create spells myself and I think there really is something to the energy and focus you put in when writing your own spell (but it's by no means a requirement)
As a witch who was just getting my footing as the pandemic hit I found my access to resources and ingredients extremely limited so a lot of my spell were either written or modified to use what I had available, especially because it felt counterproductive in the height of a pandemic to go out in public and risk the health and safety of others and my self just to get a niche spell ingredient when I could make due or substitute with what I had
Spell components are not a requirement! You can cast a spell with focus and intention!
Yes, components can help you focus and can sort of "power up" a spell by lending their own energy, but you're magical and powerful on your own! (This concept is something I learned from Soctt Cunningham's writing and while some of his stuff might be a bit outdated and rather Wiccan influenced, I think that his promotion of simple and mundane magic is something that the current witchcraft community could really benefit from) I also think a lot of practitioners underestimate or forget the power of the elements, nature, and the celestial bodies in spell work because there is a lot of focus online on spell that can be physically seen and shared, but I digress
I also think that experimenting is so important to witchcraft! Written spells weren't written in one draft They're usually the result of multiple drafts and trial and error (one of these days I should share what a mess my little notebook I use to draft spells and rune bindings looks like to kinda share what it can look like when you're drafting a spell)
In addition to experimenting, I'd love to see more new practitioners (and sometimes experienced ones) trust their intuition more Stop doubting your gut! If you feel x herb is good for y then it is! You don't need approval from people online or a book I've used herbs or crystals for things in spells that no one online and no written correspondence has said it should be used for but it feels right for me and for my working so I use it
anyways...I guess what I'm saying is that witchcraft and spell craft is not something rigid with rules and requirements It's something highly personal and adaptable witchcraft, folk practices, and paganism as a whole have always been practices of the everyday people don't let anyone or anything stop you from your craft, especially not something as silly as not having a specific component

some helpol reminders
(from a mostly revivalist perspective)
• candles aren’t reliable for divination. don’t use candles for divination. please at least try to get a pendulum or something if you want to do divination. candles are just too easily influenced.
• no, the gods aren’t mad at you (unless you killed someone or burned down a temple). just because your candle flickered doesnt mean theyre mad. just because they didn’t answer your prayer right away doesnt mean theyre mad.
• the gods CAN reach out to you. it happens to a lot of us. on the other hand, you don’t have to wait for a god to reach out. worship whoever the hell you want.
• you don’t need an altar. you could just have an empty space you dedicate to praying in and that would be fine. also, you don’t need a BIG altar. it could be a mint box or something and that would be fine.
• you’re allowed to eat offerings. if you’re not in a position where you can waste food, just eat the offerings. not everyone is privileged enough to burn or bury all their offerings and in fact the ancients often ate parts of their offerings too
• the myths aren’t meant to be taken literally, but rather metaphorically. don’t disregard them entirely but don’t treat the gods like their myths literally happened and theres physical proof of them happening
• anything can be a devotional act. having a glass of water could be a devotional act.
• offerings dont need to be big or exquisite or expensive. grab a flower from your backyard or something. offerings dont even have to be physical (re; devotional acts).
• it’s okay if you struggle to find information about the religion. not everyone has access to them and it’s privileged to think everyone has to read ten books on the subject (while that would be nice, we need to be gentle with those who struggle to do research on their own).
• gatekeeping isnt okay. it doesn’t matter where someone learned about the religion, they should be welcomed and treated with respect.
• same goes for age, ethnicity, and previous religion if they had one. young polytheists shouldnt be shamed. people who aren’t greek CAN be a helpol (this even happened in the ancient times, generally as long as you could speak greek you could take part in rituals, no matter your ethnicity).
• you don’t have to take part in every single holiday/festival/etc. you could just take part in those for the gods you worship. also, it doesnt have to be complicated. you could just take some time to pray to the gods the holiday is for/about.
remember, your practice is yours. it can be as complicated or as easy as you’d like it to be. don’t let people on the internet dictate your practice.
(but if someone is trying to educate you on a topic you may have gotten wrong, please at least humour them. it’s rude to outright say “No I don’t care”, especially if the topic is regarding actual ancient history)
Samhain Ritual For The Forgotten
Hey, I'm Red, I'm 23, I've been a pagan since I was like 13, and last year I made this post about forgotten gods that sparked me to begin working with them.
As the wheel of the year moves into the fall and Samhain, a time to honor the dead and gone, I figured it is also the prime time for a proper ritual for The Forgotton.
I don't usually do big elaborate rituals, but I feel like this is a good use of my time, and if anyone else feels called to take this and come up with their own for the Forgotten, please do so and post about it!
Warning
I fully anticipate to start crying during this ritual, as I usually do when working with Them. I usually get an overwhelming feeling of comfort or sadness when working with Them, and I know everyone is different but be warned if you are extra sensitive. Stay safe, and onto the ritual.
Intention
My intention for this ritual is to show appreciation and gratitude, to let them know that even though their names are gone, the fruits of their labor are still around.
Offering
I'm going to libate an entire bottle of mead. I do not have the time, energy, or resources to make mead, but I do have the little bit of extra money to buy a bottle (~$13 at the local liquor store, it's not high quality but it'll do the trick).
I will also burn incense or light a candle.
Incantation/Prayer
I will say the following as I pour:
To the Forgotten, the Gods Lost To Time, I give you this offering. I may not know your names, or the roles that you played, but you guided my ancestors in ways that I will never know. Your hand in our evolution is not unnoticed. Thank you, with all that I am, on behalf of every life you shaped. May you drink well tonight.
Direction
Light the candle or incense while setting your intention, begin pouring the offering from bottle or cup onto the earth and saying the incantation/prayer. I'll probably sit for some meditation after, sitting with the Forgotten.

Do research on potentially dangerous animals in your area (what do they look like, where do they like to live, why are they potentially dangerous, etc.)
Make charms/other items for deceased loved ones especially protective ones or ones with her image and leave them on their gravesites (if possible) or on an ancestor altar
Learn about and uphold Ma'at
Make a playlist or listen to songs that remind you of her or you think she'd like
Make a collage/moodboard/pinterest board/similar collection of photos and images you associate with her, especially if some of the images are your own
Wear a piece of jewelry or other clothing item that reminds you of her
Light a candle or incense that reminds you of her (safely)
Carry a picture of her in your wallet, pocket, phone case, etc. or as a phone or computer wallpaper
Have scorpion imagery
Visit cemeteries; leave flowers at graves (with permission); or help clean up gravesites (if allowed)
Honor your ancestors/souls that have passed
Carry a protective charm with you, especially a scorpion themed one
Support humanitarian organizations especially those that help parents or children
Take care of a plant, animal, or other person
Show support for any parents in your life, especially new ones; help out when/if you can
Be kind to children; play with them if offered
Donate children and baby supplies to homeless shelters
Help out or mentor others, especially children
Destroy depictions of A/p/e/p this can be as simple as drawing it on a piece of paper and tearing it up
Allow yourself to mourn over difficult changes or the end of relationships; allow yourself to miss people
Support humanitarian organizations, especially funeral funding or suicide prevention ones
Learn about death; acquaint yourself with the idea of death; figure out what you believe happens after death

Good Practices for Grieving Witches
Grief sucks. It’s weird, it’s exhausting, and it never looks the way you expect. One minute, you’re crying into your tea, and the next, you’re furious at the universe. It could be anticipatory grief (I see you), grief over death, grief over a society we're losing, or anything else. Someone/something doesn't have to die for you to grieve. If you're a witch dealing with grief (or just a person, honestly), here are some things that might help:
🔮 For the “I have no energy” grief – Light a candle. That’s it. No elaborate rituals, no full moon graveyard walks. Just light a candle, maybe whisper their name, and let that be enough. If even that’s too much? Sleep. Spirits know how to wait.
🔥 For the “I’m so fucking mad” grief – Channel it. Burn shit (safely). Scream at the sky. Write down every angry thought, then tear it up or toss it into running water. Grief is messy, and magic doesn’t have to be polite.
🌿 For the “I just wanna feel close to them” grief – Make a little spot for them, if that feels right. A photo, a trinket, their favorite snack. Talk to them, even if it feels weird. Signs can be subtle, but sometimes they’re loud as hell.
🌊 For the “everything hurts and I need comfort” grief – Water is your best friend. Drink it, bathe in it, cry in it, leave an offering in it. Emotions move like water—let them flow instead of bottling them up.
Grief is a long, stupid road, but you’re walking it. However you get through it—whether you’re lighting a candle, throwing hands at the sky, or just taking a deep breath—it’s enough.

I honestly... struggle sometimes. With things that happen to me/around me, that I can't really explain away. It always feels like it can't be that easy lol I have to be making it up or something. But...
A few minutes ago, I felt an overwhelming presence in my space, of just...
anger

rebellion
chaos
I had lit a candle, meant for a specific Goddess technically, but it started dancing rhythmically, burning bright and hard. (It still is, as I write this.)
And... I had no idea who/what it was. I follow and worship a lot of deities and venerate/work with even more deities and spirits. So I decided... I'll do a little research. Figure out who this is.
So I drew a card from my tarot deck after extensive shuffling, and got Knight of Swords. Not particularly narrowing, so, after shuffling, I drew another. The Devil.
Now... that does in fact narrow it down, but only kind of lol So I looked up what deities are more commonly associated with The Devil card. Several names came up, but one that stuck out was The Morrigan.
Still not sure, I looked up deity correspondences for the Knight of Swords. In looking up Swords as a suit, The Morrigan came up. In looking up specifically Knight of Swords... The Morrigan came up.
So, after shuffling more, I drew one more card. "Is this her?"

a life update (given.... everything lol)
Alright *sipping tea and getting settled* Lets get into the nitty gritty of what I've been up to.
For starters, I figure I should get it out of the way that I'm terrified. Same as a lot of people, but I have decided that instead of rolling over in my fear and letting myself be trampled, I'm going to stand up for what I believe in.
I will not be silent. I will not hide who I am to be palatable and pass as "normal". I am not normal, and there's nothing wrong with that.
Lucifer has been a huge help in that area. I finally really started doing research and learning and trying things, and while he's always gave off the vibe that he was willing to work with me, there was always the caveat that I wouldn't get a whole lot out of it, because of my religious trauma.

And I have been working on it, steadily, with his and Hestia's help. She's been helping me keep my home cleaned, for the most part... I still stumble with that. Being chronically ill makes it more difficult to keep up than I'd like.
Speaking of, I really need to do my dishes pffft.
But generally speaking, I have been alright. Better, in some aspects, but I am... angry. Angry and scared and enraged and terrified, but I will not let those emotions control me. I will do what I need to. I will not submit.

i think i'm mostly just excited to learn about different things! i love learning about the gods, about how to incorporate magick into everything i do.

this is a bit of a loaded answer because i was raised evangelical christian, so my views are both skewed and not fully formed yet. i personally think there's Something, i just don't know what!

definitely tea, but i just make a pitcher of sweet tea every morning with tea bags! black sweet tea is the best! it's a meditative routine.

i don't think so? i'm still very new to getting to learn about everything. but i do think i get kind of skeptical of the more new age kind of witchcraft. they can get a little "if you have the right intentions you won't need mental health medication" sometimes.

around three years ago! i think lol i've always been fascinated and i never really agreed with christian teaching. i really think this is the path for me.
theyre digging a grave, in the cemetery by my apartment today. i can see it through my sliding glass door
it feels... different. seeing them prepare the space instead of just knowing they probably are
so i lit one of my unused candles for the deceased, and for the living that they left behind. ill be doing a ritual later with some of the bread i made, its still proving, as a offering to Thanatos
they may not have been the best person, this body theyre laying to rest today, but everyone deserves kindness
going out to a local shelter to meet some dogs today, someone tried to break into my neighbor's apartment (she was blessed that they didn't actually get the door open) and i want to get something as another ESA that will also alert me if someone breaks in
praying to the gods that i find one that will be perfect for my situation, if not today then soon
