But this isn’t just a Good Girls account.
I’m also deep into On My Block, and if you’ve ever seen me talk about Spooky Diaz, just know I have absolutely no shame. That man has my entire heart.

♫ Play this while you read…
The warehouse was empty except for the two of you. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead while rain drummed softly against the metal roof.
Rio leaned against the hood of his car, watching you pace.
“You been quiet all day, mama.”
“I’m thinking.”
“’Bout?”
You stopped walking.
“Everything.”
He studied your face for a moment before sighing.
“You always do that.”
“What?”
“Get in your own head.”
You looked away.
“It’s hard not to.”
Rio pushed himself off the car and walked toward you.
“Ain’t nothing happening that we can’t handle.”
“You don’t know that.”
He stopped in front of you.
“I usually do.”
You let out a shaky laugh.
“You really think you know everything.”
“Nah.”
A smirk appeared.
“Just enough.”
You rolled your eyes.
“I hate when you do that.”
“What?”
“Act all mysterious.”
“It works.”
“No, it doesn’t.”
“It got you smiling.”
Your smile disappeared almost immediately.Rio noticed.
“There she is…”
You looked down.
“I don’t deserve to smile.”
His expression shifted.
“Who told you that?”
You shrugged.
“No one.”
“Liar.”
Before you could answer, a phone buzzed inside his pocket.
Rio pulled it out, glanced at the screen, and sighed.
“Damn.”
“What?”
“Business.”
He slipped the phone away before reaching behind his back and pulling out his handgun.
“Safety first.”
He removed the magazine, checking it out of habit.
You stared at the weapon.
“I hate those.”
“Mhm.”
“They scare me.”
“They’re supposed to.”
He glanced down for another second.
“I gotta clear—”
Without thinking, you reached toward it.
“Rio, let me see—”
His head snapped up.
“Mama—”
Your fingers slipped.
The gun fired.
The sound echoed through the warehouse like thunder.
Time stopped.
Rio looked down.
A dark stain slowly spread across his shirt.
Your eyes followed it.
The gun slipped from your hands and hit the concrete with a loud clang..
“…Rio?”
Your voice barely came out.
He staggered backward, one hand instinctively pressing against his side.
For a second…
He stayed standing.
Then his knees gave out.
“Rio!”
You dropped beside him so fast your knees slammed against the concrete.
“No, no, no, no…”
Your hands shook as you pressed them against the wound.
Blood immediately covered your fingers.
Your breathing became uneven.
“I didn’t mean to…”
Tears blurred your vision.
“I didn’t mean to!” You yelled..
Rio winced, his breathing strained.
“Mama…”
“I’m sorry.”
You couldn’t stop saying it.
“I’m so sorry.”
Your entire body trembled.
“This is my fault.”
Rio slowly reached for your wrist despite the pain.
“Look…”
You couldn’t.
“I shot you…”
“Look at me.” He said..You forced yourself to meet his eyes.
There wasn’t anger.
There wasn’t hate.
Just pain.
“It…was an accident.”
A sob escaped your lips.
“I’m sorry.”
“I know.”
Sirens echoed somewhere outside.
You hadn’t even realized someone had called for help.
People rushed into the warehouse.
Hands gently pulled you away from him.
“No!”
You struggled against them.
“Please!”
“He needs medical attention!”
“I need him!”
Rio looked toward you as the paramedics lifted him onto the stretcher.
His face had gone pale. His eyes found yours one last time.
“I’m okay…darlin..”
The ambulance doors slammed shut.
And then…He was gone.
—
Three days.
Three days of silence.
Three days of staring at your bloodstained hoodie folded on the edge of your bed because you couldn’t bring yourself to wash it.
You hadn’t slept.
Every time you closed your eyes…
You heard the gunshot.
You saw Rio falling.
You saw the blood.
You’d stopped answering your phone.
Stopped eating.
Stopped leaving the house.
You were convinced he’d never want to see you again.
Why would he?
You’d almost taken his life.
A quiet knock echoed through the apartment.
You frowned.Another knock,Your heart began pounding.Nobody ever visited…Slowly, you walked toward the front door.
Your hand trembled as it rested on the handle.
“…Coming…”
Your voice sounded weak..You unlocked the door,Pulled it open.
Your breath caught.
Rio stood on the other side.
A dark jacket rested over his shoulders, one arm tucked carefully against his side beneath the fabric.A fresh bandage peeked out from beneath his shirt. He looked tired.
Paler than usual.
But alive.
“…Rio?”
Your voice barely came out.
He smiled.
Small.
Gentle.
“Hey,love…”
The nickname shattered whatever composure you had left.
Your eyes immediately filled with tears.
“You…”
Your lip trembled.
“I…”
Rio’s smile faded into something softer.
“I’m alright.”
A sob escaped your throat.
Without thinking, you threw your arms around him.
He let out a quiet grunt.
“Easy,mama…”
You immediately pulled back.
“Oh my God!”
“I’m sorry!”
“I forgot—”
“I’m okay.”
“You just got shot!”
He couldn’t help letting out a quiet laugh.
“I noticed.”
Fresh tears rolled down your cheeks.
“I thought…”
Your voice broke.
“I thought you died.”
Rio looked at you for a long moment before gently reaching up with his free hand.
His thumb brushed away one of your tears.
“Nah.”
“I’m right here.”
You shook your head.
“I’m so sorry.”
“You’ve said that enough.”
“No,I haven’t.”
“You have.”
Your shoulders shook.
“I pulled the trigger.”
“It was an accident.”
“I should’ve never touched it.”
“I know.”
“You could’ve…”
The words wouldn’t come out.
Rio slowly pulled you back into another hug.
This time…
Much gentler.
He rested his chin lightly against the top of your head.
“You been crying?”
You nodded against his chest.
“…Every day.”
His jaw tightened.
“For me?”
Another nod.
“I couldn’t stop hearing it.”
He closed his eyes.
“I know.”
“I kept thinking…”
You swallowed hard.
“…what if those were the last words I ever said to you?”
Rio was quiet.
Then…
“You know what my first thought was?”
You looked up.
“What?”
He smiled faintly.
“You looked more scared than I felt.”
A tear slipped down your cheek.
“You were bleeding…”
“You were breaking.”
His voice was calm.
“I saw it.”
You stared at him.
“I ain’t come here so you could keep blaming yourself.”
“Then…why did you come?”
He looked at you like the answer was obvious.
“‘Cause I missed you.”
The words stole the air from your lungs.
“I figured…”
He shrugged carefully.
“…you probably needed somebody to remind you I was still breathing.”
You laughed through your tears.
A messy,little laugh.
“There she is…”
He murmured.
You smiled despite yourself.
“I hate when you say that.”
“Nah.”
His grin returned.
“You love it.”
You rolled your eyes.
“I really don’t.”
“Liar!”
For the first time in days…The apartment didn’t feel so empty.

The warehouse was colder than usual. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, casting long shadows across stacks of cash and cardboard boxes. You hated coming here. Not because of the place.Because every single time you walked through those doors, you forgot how to act around him.
Rio already knew you were there.
He didn’t bother looking up.
“Took you long enough.”
You shut the warehouse door behind you.
“I was on time.”
“Nah.”
He finished counting a stack of bills before finally meeting your eyes.
“You late.”
You sighed.
“It’s two minutes.”
“Still counts.”
You rolled your eyes, setting the duffel bag onto the metal table.
“You always this dramatic?”
“Only when somebody keeps me waiting.”
Your heart skipped.
You ignored it.
“I seriously don’t know how Beth deals with you.”
A quiet chuckle escaped him.
“She don’t,we share half of our braincells ho.”
Silence settled between you.
You unzipped the bag, pulling out bundles wrapped neatly in plastic.Rio walked over without saying a word. His shoulder brushed yours as he reached for the money.
You stiffened.
He noticed.
Of course he did.
“You alright,mama?”
“I’m fine.”
“Mhm.” He didn’t sound convinced, you kept your eyes on the table.
“You always say that.”
“Because I usually am.”
He leaned one hand against the table, close enough that you could smell the faint scent of his cologne.
“You ain’t looked at me once since you walked in.”
“I’ve looked at you.”
“Nah.” He shook his head.
“You looked around me.”
You swallowed.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Liar.”
You laughed nervously.
“You think everybody lies.”
“I know when you do.”
Your fingers fumbled with one of the bundle, it slipped from your hands, before it hit the floor,Rio caught it.
“So jumpy.”
“I’m just tired.”
“Mhm.”
“There you go again.”
“What?”
“Lying.”You finally looked at him.
“I’m not lying.”
“You bite the inside of your cheek every time you do.”
Instinctively,you stopped.,and his smirk widened.
“See?”
You looked away again.
“I hate that you notice everything.”
“Nah.” He picked up another stack of cash.
“You just ain’t used to somebody paying attention.” The words lingered..Longer than they should have.
You busied yourself organizing the money just to avoid looking at him.
“You always this quiet?”
“I talk.”
“Not around me.”
“Maybe I don’t have anything to say.”
He hummed.
“I don’t believe that either.”
You sighed.
“You believe anything I say?”
“If it’s true.”
“And if it isn’t?”
“I’ll wait.”
You frowned.
“For what?”
“‘Til you decide to tell me.”
You laughed under your breath.
“You are impossible.”
“So they tell me.” The counting machine whirred to life, filling the silence between you..You reached for another bundle at the exact same time Rio did.
Your hands collided, you immediately pulled yours back.
“…Sorry.”
There it was again.Sorry…Rio looked down at your hand before looking back at you.
“You apologize too much.”
“I bumped into you.”
“We reached for the same thing.”
“It’s basically the same.”
“It ain’t.”
You opened your mouth to argue, but nothing came out…Rio slid the bundle toward you instead.
“You ever let yourself win?”
You blinked.
“What?”
“You always give up space.”
“I don’t.”
“You do.” He pointed toward the table.
“You moved.”
“So did you.”
“I moved after you.”
You stared at him.He’d noticed.
Again.
“You watch people a lot?”
“I watch you.”
The sentence landed between you like a dropped glass.Your heart forgot its rhythm.
“…Why?”
His expression stayed unreadable.
“‘Cause you’re interesting.”
“I’m really not.”
He tilted his head.
“See?”
“What?”
“You keep deciding who you are before anybody else gets the chance.”
You looked away…The room suddenly felt much warmer, outside, the rumble of thunder echoed across the city….Rain began tapping against the warehouse roof.
Neither of you moved.Rio folded his arms.
“You scared of storms too?”
“I’m not scared.”
“So what’re you scared of?”
You answered before thinking.
“People.”
The word came out so quietly you barely heard it yourself.
Rio did,His expression changed,Not dramatically but just ust enough for you to notice.
He didn’t tease you.He didn’t laugh.He simply nodded once.
“…Figured.”
You looked up.
“You did?”
“Mhm.”
“How?”
“You flinch when somebody walks behind you.”
Your breath caught.
“You say sorry when ain’t nobody mad.”He took one slow step closer.
“You keep looking for the nearest exit every time you walk into a room.”
Your throat tightened.
“You notice all that?”
“I notice everything.”
The rain grew heavier.
For a long moment, neither of you spoke.
Then Rio reached past you to grab another stack of cash…His arm brushed yours…and this time?…
You didn’t pull away.He noticed that too.
A faint smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.
“There she is.”
You looked at him,confused.
“What?”
“Thought maybe you’d stop running from me.”
You laughed softly.
“I’m not running.”
“Nah?”
He took another step until only inches separated you.
“Then why’s your heart beating so fast?”
Your eyes widened.
“You can’t hear that.”
“No.”
A smirk spread across his face.
“But judging by that look…”
He leaned in just enough for his voice to drop to a murmur.
“…I don’t gotta.”
For a second, the entire warehouse disappeared.
It was just you.
And him.
Then one of the guys called Rio’s name from across the room.He stepped back like nothing had happened.
“Get back to work,mama.”
You stood frozen in place.
He walked away without another glance. But right before disappearing into the next aisle…
He looked over his shoulder.
And smiled.
—
The house was silent.
The only sound was the rain tapping softly against the windows.Sleep refused to come.
You shifted beneath the blankets, staring at the ceiling for what felt like the hundredth time.Every time you closed your eyes…
You saw him,His smile,His voice.
The way he’d looked at you in the warehouse.
A quiet creak echoed through the hallway, you frowned.
Had you imagined it?
Another soft step.
Then…A gentle knock against your half-open bedroom door.
You pushed yourself up on your elbows.
“…Hello?”
No answer.
The door opened a little farther.Rio stepped inside, closing it behind him as quietly as he could.Your eyes widened.
“Rio?”
He slipped his hands into his pockets.
“You awake.”
“I…yeah.”
He looked at you for a second before letting out a quiet laugh.
“Figured.”
You sat up completely, the blanket gathered around you.
“What are you doing here?”
“Couldn’t sleep.”
“So you came here?”
“Mhm.”
You couldn’t help smiling.
“That’s…kind of weird.”
He shrugged.
“Maybe.”
Silence settled between you.
Neither of you seemed eager to break it.
Rio walked closer until he stopped beside the bed.
“You alright?”
You nodded.
“Yeah.”
“Liar.”
You laughed softly.
“I’m just surprised.”
“I know.”
His eyes stayed on yours.
“You been thinking.”
“Maybe.”
“‘Bout today?”
“…Maybe.”
He smiled to himself.
“I got in your head,huh?”
You rolled your eyes.
“Don’t flatter yourself.”
“Too late.”
Another laugh escaped you.
“There she is.”
“You really like saying that.”
“‘Cause I like hearing you laugh.”
Your cheeks warmed.
He noticed.
Of course he did.
“You blush easy.”
“Oh my God…”
You buried your face in your hands.
“Quit looking at me.”
“Nah.”
“You are so annoying.”
“I know.”
You peeked at him through your fingers.
He was smiling…Not the cocky grin everyone else knew,Something softer,Something that almost didn’t seem real…
He reached over slowly, his fingers gently wrapped around your wrist, pulling your hands away from your face.
“There you are.”
Your heart pounded…He searched your eyes for a long moment.
“You still alright?”
You nodded.
“I need words.”
“…Yeah.”
“Yeah?”
“I’m alright.”
“Good.” His thumb brushed lightly across your knuckles.
“So…”
“So?”
“You gonna keep pretending you ain’t been thinking about me?”
You laughed nervously.
“I wasn’t pretending very well,was I?”
“Nah.”
His voice had dropped to almost a whisper.
“Not even a little.”
Your eyes drifted to his lips before you could stop yourself…When you looked back up…He’d caught you, a teasing smile appeared.
“You keep doing that.”
“What?”
“Looking at me like that.”
Heat rushed to your cheeks.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Liar.”
Before you could come up with another excuse,he leaned down slowly, giving you every chance to move away,You didn’t.
His lips brushed yours in a soft, lingering kiss…Gentle.
Unhurried.
When he pulled back, you blinked at him, still trying to catch your breath.
“…Rio?”
“Yes,love?”
The nickname made your heart melt.
He smiled before pressing another brief kiss to your forehead, this one lingering for just a second longer.

Oscar Diaz wasn’t known for being nice.Everyone in Freeridge knew that.If Spooky looked your way,you looked away first. If he spoke, you listened. If he was angry, you left. You’d heard enough stories to know better.
Unfortunately, you had a habit of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
You pushed open the door to the corner store,a paper bag tucked against your chest.Your headphones rested over your ears, the music just loud enough to drown out the world.
You weren’t paying attention.
Neither was he.
Your shoulder slammed into someone’s chest. The force sent the bag slipping from your hands, groceries rolling across the sidewalk.
Your heart stopped.
“Oh my God…I’m so sorry.”
You dropped to your knees, frantically gathering everything before even looking up.
A pair of black boots stopped in front of you.
“…Seriously?”
Your hands froze.
That voice.
Slowly,you looked up.
Oscar Diaz.
His expression was unreadable.
“You blind or something?”
“I…I’m sorry.”
“You already said that.”
You quickly grabbed the last can from the pavement.
“I wasn’t looking.”
“No shit.”
Heat crawled up your neck.
“I’m sorry.”
Again.
Oscar stared at you.
“You apologize a lot.”
You lowered your head.
“…Sorry.”
He scoffed.
“Whatever.”
He stepped around you without another glance.
You stayed crouched on the sidewalk until he disappeared.
Your hands wouldn’t stop shaking.
It wasn’t because of him.
It never was.
He just reminded you of people who used to look at you the same way.
•••
A few days later,it happened again.
You were leaving Ruby’s house after dropping off a notebook he’d forgotten for school when you accidentally walked past the Santos’ corner.
Oscar leaned against the wall, cigarette resting between his fingers.
You immediately looked down.
Wrong place.
Again.
You tried slipping past unnoticed.
Your shoulder brushed his.
Barely.
“…Sorry.”
Oscar looked at you.
“You even know what you’re apologizing for?”
You blinked.
“I…”
“You bumped into me?”
“I guess.”
“You guess?”
Your fingers tightened around your backpack strap.
“…I’m sorry.”
Oscar frowned.
Something wasn’t right.
You weren’t scared of him.
You were scared of…everyone.
Before he could say anything,Cesar walked outside.
He looked between the two of you.
“Oh…”
Oscar glanced at him.
“You know her?”
Cesar nodded.
“Yeah.”
“What’s with all the apologizing!?!?”
Cesar’s expression immediately changed.
“Damn…”
“What?”
“You don’t know?”
Oscar crossed his arms.
“Know what?”
Cesar looked over at you as you hurried away, head down, walking faster than before.
“Leave it.”
“I’m asking.”
Cesar sighed.
“Back in high school…”
Oscar waited.
“They made her life hell.”
His jaw tightened.
“What happened?”
“They bullied her for years.”
Silence.
“They’d shove her into lockers.”
Oscar looked toward the street where you’d disappeared.
“They’d lock her in classrooms after everyone left.”
Another silence.
“They cut her hair once.”
Oscar’s eyes narrowed.
“They’d throw food at her.”
“They’d tell everybody she was crazy.”
“They’d laugh whenever she cried.”
Cesar looked down.
“Eventually she just…started apologizing for existing.”
Oscar didn’t say a word.
He lit another cigarette instead.
The lighter clicked shut.
Smoke filled the air.
“…Shit.”
It was the only word he managed.
From that day on…
He started noticing.
You apologized when someone held the door open.
You apologized when the cashier handed you your change.
You apologized when somebody stepped on your shoe.
Even when none of it was your fault.
And for some reason…
Oscar couldn’t stop thinking about you.
—
Oscar couldn’t get you out of his head.
For days he’d catch himself looking for you without meaning to.
Outside the corner store.
Walking home from work.
Crossing the street with your head down and your backpack clutched tightly against your shoulder.
Every time…
You looked like you were waiting for someone to yell at you.
It pissed him off.
One evening, the Santos garage was quieter than usual. Most of the guys had already left.Cesar sat on an old couch, scrolling through his phone while Oscar leaned against the workbench, absently spinning a wrench between his fingers.
“There she goes.”
Oscar looked up.
You walked past the open garage, eyes fixed on the sidewalk.
“C’mere.”
You stopped immediately.
Your shoulders tensed.
Slowly,you turned around.
“…Me?”
“Yeah.You.”
You hesitated before taking a few careful steps toward the garage, stopping just outside.
“You ain’t gotta stand all the way over there.”
You glanced around nervously.
“I don’t wanna bother you.”
“You ain’t.”
Silence.
“You always listen this good?”
A tiny shrug.
“I guess.”
Oscar motioned toward an old folding chair.
“Sit.”
You looked at it,then back at him.
“You sure?”
He sighed.
“There you go again.”
“…Sorry.”
Oscar rubbed a hand over his face.
“I wasn’t telling you off.”
“I know.”
“No,you don’t.”
You looked down.
He grabbed a bottle of water from the mini fridge and held it out.
You stared at it like he was handing you something expensive.
“…For me?”
Oscar almost laughed.
“Yeah.For you.”
You accepted it carefully.
“Thank you.”
He leaned back against the workbench.
“So…”
“So?”
“What’s your name?”
You blinked.
“You…don’t know?”
“If I did,I wouldn’t be asking.”
You quietly told him.He repeated your name once, testing it.
“It suits you.”
Your cheeks warmed.Nobody had ever said that before.
“So…”
He crossed his arms.
“You always walk around looking like somebody’s about to yell at you?”
You looked down at the unopened water bottle.
“…Sometimes they do.”
Oscar’s jaw tightened.
“And today?”
“…Habit.”
Silence settled between you.
He noticed how you kept picking at the label on the bottle.
How your foot bounced against the concrete.
How you jumped when someone laughed outside.
“You don’t gotta be nervous here.”
Your eyes slowly lifted to meet his.
“I know who you are.”
“So?”
“You’ve got a reputation.”
A corner of his mouth lifted.
“That scare you?”
You thought about it.
“…It did.”
“And now?”
You looked at him for a long moment.
“…Not as much.”
Something about that answer made him smile.A real one.Small, but real.
“There she is.”
You laughed before you could stop yourself. The sound echoed through the garage.Oscar noticed the way you immediately covered your mouth.
“…Sorry.”
His smile disappeared.
He stepped closer, stopping in front of you.
“I’m gonna tell you something.”
You nodded.
“I don’t wanna hear you apologize unless you actually did something wrong.”
Your fingers tightened around the bottle “I…”
“You laughed.”
He shrugged.
“That’s allowed.”
You felt tears sting your eyes.Nobody had ever said something so simple…And made it sound so believable.Oscar noticed. He didn’t ask why.He just reached into the mini fridge again.
hihiii Deevyne!! Just wanted to take a moment to tell you that idk if you stay a lot of tumblr but your Rio fics are really comforting! Think you will do a spooky x reader fanfic soon when you have time??? If yes I genuinely can’t wait to read it!
all luvs Deevyne!
This is so sweet anon! Also yes I’m currently working on a spooky x reader fanfic and is inspired by a song from my all time fav artist(Yes Nessa Barrett,I love to call her mi madre because shes my special artist)
Authors note: I started writing this because I couldn’t get the idea out of my head, and somehow it turned into this. Most of my writing happens late at night, so if you spot a typo or a sentence that sounds like it was written by someone running on three hours of sleep… it probably was. ..This story is a slow burn and inspired by a chase atlantic song, the fic also focuses heavily on healing, trust, comfort, and learning what it feels like to be genuinely cared for after experiencing trauma. While there are romantic moments, I want the emotional connection between Rio and the reader to be the heart of the story. <3 stay comforted by this fic maybe🖤
Listen to this while reading! <3 (is ok if not.)
The house was quieter than usual. You stood in the doorway of Rio’s bedroom, your fingers nervously playing with the sleeve of the oversized shirt hanging from your frame. Most of your boxes were still sealed in the hallway, but somehow the place already felt different.Your shoes sat beside his at the front door.Your favorite blanket was folded over the arm of the couch.Your coffee mug rested next to his in the kitchen. You lived here now.The thought alone made your heart race.
Rio sat at the edge of the bed, watching you in complete silence. His elbows rested on his knees, his hands loosely clasped together. You could feel his eyes following every little movement you made.
“You gonna keep standing there?”
You blinked.
“What?”
“You been staring at that floor for five minutes.”
You looked down.
“…Have I?”
“Mhm.”
Heat crept into your cheeks.
“I didn’t notice.”
“I know.”
You let out a quiet laugh.
His eyes never left you.
“You nervous?”
You hesitated.
“…Maybe.”
“‘Bout me?”
Your eyes snapped up.
“No.”
A small smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth.
“You answered that real fast.”
“I’m serious.”
“I know.”
The room fell quiet again.
Rain tapped softly against the bedroom window while the warm glow from the bedside lamp painted soft shadows across the walls. You swallowed hard.
“I’ve never done this before.”
Rio tilted his head.
“Done what?”
“…Moved in with somebody.”
He nodded slowly,letting you continue.
“I keep thinking I’m gonna mess something up.”
“You won’t.”
“You don’t know that.”
“I do.”
You laughed under your breath.
“You sound awfully confident.”
“I am.”
You looked away.
“I’ve always had to be careful.”
“I noticed.”
You frowned.
“You notice everything.”
“I do.”
He stood from the bed and walked over slowly, stopping just in front of you.Close enough that you could catch the faint scent of his cologne, but far enough that you still had room to step back if you wanted.
You didn’t.
His gaze lingered on your face.
“You keep waiting for me to change my mind.”
Your chest tightened.
“I…”
“You ain’t gotta say it.”
His voice stayed calm.
“I can see it.”
Your eyes watered.
“You keep apologizing every time you put something down.”
You laughed nervously.
“I said sorry because I left my hoodie on the couch.”
“You live here.”
“I know.”
“You apologized because your shampoo’s in my shower.”
“…Yeah.”
“You asked if you could open my fridge.”
A tiny smile escaped you.
“…That one was kinda stupid.”
“A little.”
You rolled your eyes, earning the smallest chuckle from him.
“There she is.”
Your smile faded just as quickly.
“I just…”
Your voice cracked.
“I don’t wanna be too much.”
Rio’s expression softened.
“You ain’t.”
“I have baggage.”
“So do I.”
“I have bad days.”
“So do I.”
“I get scared.”
“I know.”
A tear slipped down your cheek before you could stop it.
Rio lifted his hand slowly, never rushing, never assuming. His fingers stopped just short of your face, waiting.
When you didn’t pull away, his knuckles brushed gently against your cheek, wiping away the tear.
“So damn pretty…”
He murmured it so quietly you almost thought you imagined it.
Your breath caught.
His eyes searched yours.
“You still thinking?”
“…Yeah.”
“Quit.”
“I don’t know how.”
“We’ll learn.”
His thumb rested lightly against your cheek.
“Together.”
You couldn’t stop looking at him.
Neither of you moved.
Neither of you spoke.
The silence wrapped around you like a blanket.
For the first time in a long time…
Being close to someone didn’t make you want to run.
It made you want to stay…You couldn’t stop looking at him.Neither of you moved. The silence settled between you, heavy but comforting.Rio’s thumb brushed your cheek one last time before his hand slipped away.
“You still with me?”
You nodded.
“Use your words.”
“I’m here.”
“There you go.”
A faint smile crossed his face.
His hand found yours, fingers threading gently between yours. He gave it the slightest squeeze.
“You can tell me to stop.”
Your heart skipped.
“I know.”
“Anytime.”
“I know.”
“You sure?”
Instead of answering, you took one small step closer.
The space between you disappeared.
Rio searched your face, his eyes moving from yours to your lips before meeting your gaze again.
“You thinking again.”
You let out a nervous laugh.
“I can’t help it.”
“I know.”
His hand settled lightly against your waist.
“Breathe for me.”
You inhaled slowly.
“Good.”
His voice stayed low and steady.
“Again.”
You did.
“There you go.”
Your shoulders relaxed.
“You don’t gotta be scared.”
“I’m not scared of you.”
“I know.”
His forehead rested gently against yours.
“I just want you comfortable.”
“I am.”
“You sure?”
You nodded.
“I’m sure.”
His lips curved into the smallest smile.
“Good.”
He leaned in slowly, giving you every chance to pull away.
You didn’t.
His lips met yours in a soft, lingering kiss.It wasn’t rushed. It wasn’t demanding. It was gentle, like he was asking instead of taking.
When he pulled back,he stayed close enough for your noses to brush.
“Still okay?”
You smiled.
“Yeah.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah.”
“That’s the first real smile I’ve seen all day.”
You laughed quietly.
“I guess it is.”
“There she is.”
You rolled your eyes playfully.
“You say that a lot.”
“‘Cause I like seeing her.”
Before you could answer,he guided you back a single step until the backs of your knees touched the edge of the bed.
His eyes never left yours.
“You alright?”
You nodded.
“Sit.”
You eased yourself onto the mattress, never breaking eye contact.
Rio knelt in front of you instead of towering over you, resting his forearms lightly on your knees.
“No running.”
A small smile tugged at your lips.
“I wasn’t planning on it.”
“Good.”
He reached up,tucking a loose strand of hair behind your ear.
“‘Cause I’m not going anywhere either.”
Your chest warmed.
For the first time in years, the room didn’t feel like somewhere you had to escape from,It felt like somewhere you were finally allowed to stay…The room fell quiet again. The rain continued tapping against the window while neither of you said a word.Rio’s eyes never left yours.
“You still alright?”
You nodded.
“I need words.”
“I’m alright.”
“Good.”
He offered you his hand. You slipped your fingers into his without thinking. He gently guided you farther onto the bed until you were sitting comfortably against the headboard. He sat beside you, close enough that your shoulders brushed.
“You look nervous.”
“I am.”
“You don’t gotta be.”
You looked down at your lap.
“I’ve never…had someone be this patient with me.”
Rio was quiet for a moment.
“Then we’ll take our time.”
Your heart fluttered.
“No rush.”
His fingers found yours again, absently tracing small circles across the back of your hand.
“You tell me if something don’t feel right.”
“I will.”
“You promise?”
“I promise.”
A small smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.
“Good.”
He reached up,brushing another loose strand of hair away from your face. His fingertips lingered for only a second before pulling away, letting you decide what happened next.
You closed the distance yourself.
Your lips met his in another slow kiss, soft enough to make your chest ache.
Rio smiled against your lips.
“That’s my girl…”
His voice was barely a whisper.
The words sent warmth rushing through your body.
He rested his forehead against yours once more.
“Look at me.”
You did.
“There she is.”
You laughed quietly.
“You keep saying that.”
“‘Cause I like seeing you smile.”
Your cheeks warmed.
“You blush easy.”
“Stop pointing it out.”
“Can’t.”
He chuckled softly.
“It’s cute.”
You hid your face against his shoulder with an embarrassed groan.
Rio laughed under his breath.
“There she is again.”
“You are so annoying.”
“Mhm.”
“But you’re still here.”
“…Yeah.”
“Why’s that?”
You peeked up at him.
“…Because I like being here.”
His expression softened.
“I like you here too.”
Silence settled between you once more, but this time it wasn’t filled with uncertainty. It was comfortable.
His arm slipped gently around your shoulders, pulling you against his side.
“You know what I want?”
You looked up.
“What?”
“For you to stop waiting for the bad part.”
Your smile faded.
“I’ve spent so long expecting it.”
“I know.”
He pressed a gentle kiss to the top of your head.
“But it ain’t coming tonight.”
You closed your eyes, listening to the steady beat of his heart.

༺♡༻
The bass from the speakers echoed through the crowded bar, making the glasses on the shelves rattle. You hated loud places. You hated strangers brushing past you.you hated the smell of alcohol.
Most of all, you hated feeling trapped.
Your fingers wrapped tightly around the glass in front of you, your knuckles turning pale. You hadn’t taken a single sip.Across from you, your(strict) boyfriend laughed with Rio as if the world had never hurt either of them.
You stayed quiet. You always stayed quiet. It was easier that way.People couldn’t criticize what you didn’t say.Your boyfriend rested a hand on your shoulder as he laughed.
Your body stiffened before you could stop yourself.
“So tense,” he muttered with a grin, giving your shoulder a squeeze.
“Relax.” he told you. You forced a smile.
“I’m okay.” …He seemed satisfied with the answer.
You weren’t.
“You two keep talking,” he said, standing from his chair. “Im going to the Bathroom.”
The moment he disappeared into the crowd, your shoulders dropped. You hadn’t even realized you were holding your breath.
“You can breathe now.” Rio’s voice was calm. You looked at him, startled. “What?”
“I said…”
He leaned back in his chair.
“…you can breathe now.”
Your eyes widened.
“I don’t know what you mean.”
“Nah.” His gaze stayed on you. “You do.”
Silence.
“You ain’t looked comfortable once since you got here.”
“I’m just tired.” You told him. A literal lie,In which he could tell.
“You flinch.”
Your stomach twisted.
“What? What do you mean Rio?
“When he touches you.”
Your lips parted, but no words came out.
“You apologize every five minutes.”
You IMMEDIATELY looked away.
“You keep checking his face before you answer a question.” He said. And oh lord..Heat rushed to your cheeks.
“You wait to see if he’s mad.” …Your heart hammered against your ribs.Nobody had ever noticed.
Nobody.
Not your friends.
Not your coworkers.
Not even the people who claimed to care about you.
Yet somehow…Rio had.
“You got a place to go?” He asked
The question caught you completely off guard.
“What?”
“If you had to leave.”
You blinked.
“I…”
You couldn’t answer.Because there wasn’t one.Rio reached into the pocket of his jacket, and without drawing attention to it, he slid something across the table beneath your hand.
Metal touched your fingertips…you looked down.A silver key, your breath caught.
“Rio…” you whispered his name..
“My apartment.”
You stared at him.
“I can’t take this.”
“You can.”
“What if he finds it?”
“He won’t.”
You looked back at him, completely speechless.
“I don’t understand.” You told him..
“You don’t have to.” His voice stayed low.
“If you ever feel like you can’t do it anymore…”
He gently closed your fingers around the key.
“…come to me,Darling..”
Your eyes filled before you could stop them.
“You don’t even know me.”
Rio held your gaze.
“I know enough.”
Before you could say another word, your boyfriend returned to the table.
“What’d I miss?”
Rio picked up his drink, obviously pretending nothing happened.
“Nothing.”
You slipped the key into your pocket. For the rest of the night, your hand never left it.
—
After this whole chaos with your man he went away, the thing is that you lived in a small apartment in which wasn’t really cozy,it was sometimes not always..
Your hands trembled as you stood outside his apartment door. The silver key felt heavier than it should have. You stared at it for a long moment before sliding it into the lock.
Click.
The door opened. The apartment was quiet.Warm.Safe.
You stepped inside carefully, closing the door behind you as softly as you could.
“…Rio?”
Your voice barely rose above a whisper.
Footsteps echoed from down the hallway.
A second later,he appeared.
His dark eyes landed on you.He froze. Then his gaze traveled over your shaking hands, the tears threatening to spill, and the way you couldn’t even meet his eyes.
“You came.”
It wasn’t a question.You nodded.
“I…I didn’t know where else to go.”
Rio didn’t ask what happened. He didn’t ask if you were sure.He didn’t ask why you were there.
He simply walked over until he was standing in front of you. “You hurt?” He asked..
You hesitated. “…No.”
He held your gaze.
“You lying again?”
A tear slipped down your cheek. You let out a quiet, broken laugh as you wiped it away.
“I really suck at lying to you.”
“The worst.”
Despite everything, the corner of your mouth twitched into the smallest smile.
“There she is.”
It disappeared almost instantly.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“For showing up like this.”
“You got nothing to apologize for.”
Your shoulders finally gave out.Every wall you’d spent months building crumbled all at once.
“I’m so tired.”
“So damn tired.”
Before you realized what you were doing, you stepped closer.
Rio stayed still. He let you decide.
The moment your forehead rested against his chest, your breathing hitched. Then the tears came.Quiet ones.
The kind you’d swallowed for far too long.Rio slowly rested a hand against your back.Gentle.Steady.Safe.
“It’s alright.”
“You made it.”
Those three words shattered whatever strength you had left. You grabbed the front of his shirt and cried into his chest.Rio didn’t move.
He didn’t ask questions. He didn’t judge. “You hungry?” You looked up,confused.
“That’s…your first question?”
He shrugged. “Crying burns energy.”
A laugh escaped through your tears.
“There it is again.”
“What?” You asked,confused.
“That laugh.”
His expression softened. “I like hearing it.”
Heat crept into your cheeks.
For the first time in what felt like forever…You felt safe.
