I’ve read through Bill 25 and I want to talk about a few things.
You can the document itself out if you want, although it’s admittedly kind of hard to read. I’m not going to talk about everything in it, mainly just a few changes and additions.
First of all? The fact that they’re essentially prohibiting the display of any flags other than the Canadian and Albertan flags in schools.
If a school wants to fly another flag- say a pride flag or the Métis flag, they need permission. Only flags allowed by the Minister of Education can be shown in schools.
That’s not all for section 61. Requiring the national anthem to be played at least once a week in schools was also added.
Which. The fact that a student would need to send a request to a teacher or the principal that is signed by a parent to not stand for the anthem? The fact an employee of the board would need to send a request permission from their superiors to be allowed to not stand for the anthem?
That is fucking bullshit if you ask me.
(Honestly if the UCP wants to be American soooo badly, why don’t they just leave the province and go there themselves and leave us the fuck alone)
And well, since when would Danielle Smith ever leave schools- in particular marginalized students alone, they’ve straight up removed any promise of a welcoming environment that is respectful of differences and diversity.
I would like to note that this change is repeated many, many times throughout the bill. I only screenshotted these two but there are many more places where any mention of respecting diversity and supporting feelings of belonging are completely removed from the Education act.
“A safe and caring environment that fosters and maintains respectful and responsable behaviour” doesnt do shit if a disabled or queer or Black or Indigenous or so many other kids who would be vulnerable in a classroom feel like they’re not welcome to ask for help, to share their experiences.
It doesn’t do anything to any students who might feel like they’re alone in their class because nobody else is like them. Even if an environment is safe and fosters respect and reasonable behaviour, it’s not going to support any of the people who need it most.
(The UCP doesn’t fucking care, either.)
(The only thing that does help said students is that they finally added a requirement for those who were found to need help in literacy tests to get it. They still forgot it when the tests were implemented, so it’s a lot less impressive as it was only added due to overlooking it the first time around)
Anyway. Thank you for reading all of this, please check out the document and if you can understand it better than me and I’ve made any sort of mistakes, let me know.
In Canada it’s been reported that for people over the age of 15 around 16.7% of the population (about 4.9 million) report pain related disability and that 10.6% (3.1 million) report mobility issues or disability - and yet accommodations for these things like enough elevators in buildings, escalators, public seating, public washrooms, ramps with feasible inclines, disability/gender inclusive stalls are not considered basic or the accepted norm? Approximately 1 in 5 Canadians live with chronic pain including myself and yet I look around and see both a lack of infrastructure but also benefit support? This doesn’t even include the fact that pain is often dismissed in healthcare or labelled as attention seeking or drug seeking. You are just one accident away from chronic pain - or like me - your genes could unlock one day and find yourself in daily pain for seemingly no reason.

Alberta's government is calling on Ottawa to change the Constitution to give provinces more of a say in how federal superior court judges are appointed at the provincial level.
Premier Danielle Smith and the premiers of Ontario, Saskatchewan and Quebec wrote a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney last week saying they would like to see only judges who are approved and recommended by their governments be appointed.
That request was quickly brushed aside by federal Justice Minister Sean Fraser, and Alberta's government says it now needs to up the ante.
/hj is the funniest earnest tonetag in the world even without the handjob joke because it's ostensibly meant to clarify tone for autistic people, but the tone it's clarifying is "unreadable level of ambiguous seriousness that requires social context beyond what text can convey /glhffgt"
hey, you. yeah, you. you know you don't have to be a girl if you hate it, right? you don't need to be a boy if you hate it either. hell, you don't need to be either a girl or a boy. it's okay to not be what you were told at birth. it's okay. i promise. your presence as a trans person is a blessing to the world. if being a boy, a girl, neither, both, something else, WHATEVER, makes you happy? do it. even if you can only do it online, be online. you are another star in the world. i love you and so many others do too.
If you want to stand up for transgender Canadians, then there's a petition to ask the federal government to repeal the acts signed into law that restrict transgender medical care for transgender youth:
You need only be a resident of Canada, not a citizen to sign. Please help us give transgender youth a fighting chance. Their medical care decisions should be between the handling physician and family only. This isn't a matter for politicians to decide.
Friendly reminder that Alberta has municipal elections coming up this month! October 20th is election day.
Many areas will have advance polls.
Not sure what the point of voting in a municipal election is? Below is a breakdown of what each branch of government is responsible for. (Note: some things are funded by more than one branch, so they appear under each branch that provides funding).
Many areas will also have school board trustee elections, so make sure you research who is running in your area and vote for those elections as well!
In some rural areas, there might not be an election. For example, my municipal district counselor was the only person who submitted their papers to run for my ward, so there isn't an election in my ward. But, there are elections for other wards within my MD. This may also be the case for some school board trustees.
Make sure you know what ward/municipal electoral area you reside in, and find out when/where to vote. You should be able to find this on your local governments website. You can vote where you live, even if you recently moved!
