alright I've got to do some quick math to explain attitudes towards AI to my boss.
we're looking to create an AI policy, and when we were talking about this, my boss (older millennial) was genuinely shocked to hear that younger people do not (seem) to view AI positively (a la the recent commencement speakers being booed)
please rb for larger sample size!
Question 1/3
What is your age, and do you feel AI is a net positive or net negative in our lives today?
under 18, AI is a net positive
under 18, AI is a net negative
18-29, AI is a net positive
18-29, AI is a net negative
30-45, AI is a net positive
30-45, AI is a net negative
46-60, AI is a net positive
46-60, AI is a net negative
over 60, AI is a net postive
over 60, AI is a net negative
Question 2/3
How often do you visit or interact with museums/archives (whether in person or online)?
Frequently (multiple times per month)
Often (multiple times per year)
Occasionally (a couple times per year)
Rarely (once every couple of years)
Never :(
Question 3/3
If you saw a museum was using AI in exhibits, marketing, research, etc., would you be more or less inclined to visit that museum?
under 18, more inclined
under 18, less inclined
18-29, more inclined
18-29, less inclined
30-45, more inclined
30-45, less inclined
46-60, more inclined
46-60, less inclined
over 60, more inclined
over 60, less inclined
Thank you for helping with this data collection. Please rb for as big a sample as possible!

I think more people would benefit from my dad’s go to advice: “show up, and pay attention”
Work, friendships, relationships, etc. — all of them will be improved if you just show up and pay attention.
Show up: follow through on commitments, be present rather than distracted, keep your word
Pay attention: take notes, listen when people talk, do what you need to do to remember tasks you’ve been given, READ YOUR DAMN EMAILS
And before tumblr tumblrs, I also have undiagnosed ADHD and probably autism and “just” showing up and paying attention often takes a bit of extra effort for me. But I’m also the most recent addition to my team at work and also somehow the only one who is both on top of my shit and still only giving like 60%-70%.
I do have one warning though: once you start showing up and paying attention, you will be frustrated by how many people aren’t doing that. But hey, your boss will love you and you might even get a raise out of it.
I think the 60-70% part needs highlighting. Because showing up and paying attention generally means that you do not need to work as much or as hard as people who aren't doing that. Drop that 110% bullshit, because that's how you burn out. Pay attention and give a moderate amount of effort. This way you will have more to give in a crunch. But, importantly, if you do this right (and make sure your work is actually getting done correctly, that is key), your employer will be very happy with the job you're doing, your friends and family will feel like you're there for them, and you will still have energy for yourself.
I have a theory this is partially Uber's fault.
See, Uber made its money by inserting its app in-between the people who needed rides and the people who provided those rides. Did the app provide anything of value? Not really, which is why it was heavily subsidized for like a decade as investors poured millions and millions of dollars into it until it almost became a monopoly (Lyft stubbornly managed to hang on, but a monopoly was the stated goal). Then they proceeded to jack up the prices, play mindgames with the drivers to get the most service for the least dollars, and generally "enshittify."
Ever since Uber appeared on the scene, every single damn Silicon bro with an app has claimed "it's like Uber but for _____!" And they very specifically mean, "it's an app that will suck money out of an industry by inserting a middle man where there wasn't one before."
Enter AI. It's Uber for your brain. It's putting a goddamn middle-man money-sucking app between you and your brain.
I hate it so much.
Every Website right now: Give us a scan of your driver's license or be banished. It's for safety.
Every Website for the last 10 years: Oopsies we had another massive data breach! Tee-hee!
Every website 10 years ago: REMINDER: do not share personal information online!
Big Tech Company: We are totally not using your device to passively monitor you inside your home!
Big Tech Company: Oh we totally lied about that-- we were passively monitoring you inside your home.
(Microsoft, XB1, Kinect)
And don't even get me started about all the data that new cars are collecting and beaming straight back to their corporate overlords. And that it's just going to get worse.
idk anything about this but I love it
i literally know other people have said it before and no honestly i don't know what to do about it but holy shit every morning i wake up and there's some other incredibly-obvious violation of the law. what do you mean only three people voted to put that data center into utah. what do you mean that a data center in michigan was voted down; but they sued the town, won, and is now getting put in anyway. what do you mean that the projected environmental costs of these surveillance-state bunkers is akin to a nuclear bomb.
what do you mean that the president privately settled his own frivolous lawsuit, meaning that he is redistributing tax dollars to the proud boys for emotional damages. what do you mean that he offered a no-bid deal to his friends to seal the reflecting pool. what do you mean his cronies have learned to just dodge questions and lie on the stand. what do you mean about fucking anything he does.
and of course yes the pointless, inhumane war is distracting from the files. of course the gas prices are distracting from the endless push of capitalism's last breath. it's hard to revolt when you have no energy or time left.
and god forbid you try to actually do anything about it, holy shit. i've done the protesting and the volunteering and yes, we are all incredibly burnt out. we've been running on fumes forever, but these days everything feels incredibly pointless. we don't have the money for schools, but we will have the money for more weapons delivered to the police station.
and i don't fucking know the answer! i don't know. everyone says just get out there and vote and like, obviously yes, duh. i'm so well-past voting as an answer, though; because my trust in democracy is essentially zero. no matter how much we beg fucking do something, they just wring their hands and say: well, we need to meet them in the middle. no health care. no social security. no environmental protections. over and over we're told the money doesn't exist; and over and over we reply: it does if you just tax the rich. but don't worry! we can fund ICE with half the fucking treasury! because if he wants it, it gets done.
it is the country's 250th birthday in a month. and look how far we've come.
“Why don’t you use ai” idk man beyond the obvious environmental and “this machine causes psychosis and encourages people to kill themselves” thing I think asking the equivalent of a solid D student who is also a pathological liar if they can answer my question/do the work for me seems pretty fucking stupid
Also bc bitch I spent years to have the mind and skill that I do - why the fuck would I fucking waste that on the "NOT EVEN half assed at best" machine?
REBLOG if you are old enough to remember what a VCR is.
Hell, I remember when if you missed a show, you had to wait until reruns in the summer to catch it again. I remember staying up late to watch channels go off the air after midnight. And having to fiddle with the rabbit ears on the tv in order to catch certain channels.
Oh yeah. VCR was a newfangled luxury when I grew up :)
Would you consider the hate for AI at the moment “excessive”?

This... uh, has anyone checked to make sure that the current administration understands that Idiocracy is not a How To guide? Because I know we were all joking about it and stuff, but if they start trying to water crops with Gatorade we really gotta stop them, guys. Like, we should have stop them already, hell, we never should've gone down this road at all, but we need the plants and the plants do not crave electrolytes.

Some is better than none. Some is better than none. Some is better than none. Walking for three minutes, is better than nothing. Drinking a glass of water and eating a snack, is better than nothing. Wiping down the counter, is better than nothing. Small things are not nothing. Small things are not nothing. Small things are not nothing. You don’t have to achieve grand things if all you’re capable of right now is the smaller things. They are still achievements. Don’t do nothing just because you don’t think you’re capable of doing bigger things, just do something you’re capable of today.
