Girls would take on be responsibilities and become heroes, usually with a need to return home a new person and there was no obnoxious video gameification to the world building, the world just WAS.

It's well documented that the genre as it exists now has an incel problem to keep it brief. What the genre has become in the last 5-10 years is a tragedeigh and I weep for what once was. Isekai was taken from the girlies y'all, it didn't used to be this way.

While I was scrolling through Tumblr I saw a post saying that the reason so many blonde men in isekai anime are evil or completely stupid is because a lot of Japanese women find blonde foreigners attractive and it all started making sense.

Of course the incel author who writes incel fantasy fulfilment will write the man that women find attractive as an evil often rapey and stupid guy and his self insert that other incels can project into as this smart, powerful and badass character who gets all the girls just by existing.

Knowing this, Motoyasu's awful writing starts to make more sense. Motoyasu is the dumbest character in Shield Hero, even children and teenagers are smarter than him.

Itsuki and Ren found Malty suspicious and went to investigate the Three Heroes Church on their own while Motoyasu needed the pope to be revealed as evil right before his very eyes to understand that something was wrong. Even after Myne was exposed as a liar he still believed in her and acted completely shocked when she betrayed him.

Motoyasu is also the only hero not to be saved by a cute girl or anyone for that matter after his cursed activated. He is reduced to a joke who only lives to serve the protagonist and has no other personality trait other than trying to win Naofumi over and simping over Filo.

And speaking of Filo, I am not sure if the author made Motoyasu obsessed with her just to show him as a creep who wants to marry a child or if he genuinely believes Motoyasu's creepy behaviour is funny. Whatever the case the author made Motoyasu hella unlikable because of this (hell, people started to call him Pedoyasu because of his gross behaviour towards Filo).

He is the only hero who is treated this way and it all makes sense now.

"would you choose the bear or the man" thing got me thinking about the movie obsession and how the main characters name was bear.

so he was the stereotypical "nice guy." a good friend, shy, insecure. thought he was doing the right thing. some people would choose him thinking they were safe from other men but in reality he's also to be feared he's not the bear he's still a man

one of the things that i'm surprised i don't see more people talking about, regarding the alex meyers obsession video, is how he talks about the way he was expecting bear to be, based on how people were talking abt him online. he repeatedly talks about how bear's actions are pretty tame and how he was expecting him to be super outwardly misogynistic. but that's literally the point of the movie. it shows how misogyny and selfishness disguise themselves. someone doesn't have to physically (not sexually bc bear does do that) assault and berate women to be misogynistic.

he really pushes the narrative that bear doesn't immediately take advantage of her like how other people would so he must not be a terrible misogynistic incel. ignoring that bear would've assaulted her if not for the fact that the real nikki comes back and freaks out, he still is all of these things. obsession shows the more tame version of a cowardly misogynistic rapist because they come in more than one form. it's important to represent that abusers and rapists and misogynists aren't a rigid stereotype that only appear at violent unreasonable people that one can spot the second they see them because they aren't. sometimes they're disguised better than that.

the fact that alex meyers kept saying all this stuff abt how he can't be all these terrible things because he doesn't immediately come off the way that the stereotype of rapists and assaulters really shows a lot about how he puts people into boxes that he thinks fits them and refuses to change his stance about them even when they've given sufficient proof that they're more than a stereotype.

He avoids getting a harem because he is only into men. Like his boyfriend back home.

I love Fushigi Yugi, in all of its corny romantic melodramatic ways. The anime adaptation remains as one of my favorite guilty pleasures; I always jam out to “Itooshi Hito Tame Ni” and “Star”.

Despite that, if I had to give any advice to newcomers who want to experience the original series, stick with the manga.

I know it sounds cliche to say, but I promise you’ll get a lot more out of the manga than the anime (unless you’re a sucker like me who loves vintage shoujo anime).

Allow me to show you what I mean:

Miaka saw the Universe of the Four Gods as a means of escaping the real world.

One thing that is absent from the first episode of the anime are the glimpses of Miaka’s home life.

She is constantly pushing herself to her limits when it comes to her grades, to the point where she’s falling asleep in class due to a lack of sleep.

It’s evident that her mother is pushing Miaka to get into an acclaimed high school (Jonan), even though it sounds like Yotsubadai would be more attainable.

Just a few pages later, she gets into a pretty big fight with her mother (which was rooted in Miaka writing about her crush on Tamahome- the boy she just met).

The anime completely removed this part in favor of having Yui being the only one sent back.

It’s actually amazing to me how much more depth this initially gave Miaka. In her position, tons of people would rather escape into a magical book. I know I sure wish I could at her age.

I’ve hit the picture limit, so I’ll eventually have to make another post about some specific changes in the anime vs manga.

The christian family in these memes (which are absolutely all over facebook these days) genuinely do always look miserable. Who the fuck is relating to these stock mormon farm cultists. That is a couple who made love only once in pitch darkness with bags on their heads then celebrated the pregnancy with a feast of uncooked potatoes and warm tapwater. The baby seems intrigued though. Maybe only by the bottle of pills??

Who the fuck walks around with a Bible like that? Those pages are printed on the worst kind of papers, so it's easy to ruin when left out in the elements. I used to go to church and I'd never see the pastor just casually walk around with a Bible unless he was going to a church-sponsored charity event.

Where is the stroller for the baby? Strollers are great not only for saving energy, they also carry supplies and snacks for both the baby and mother.

I'm glad to see that the person on the left is on SSRIs instead of living with severe depression. Obviously, the SSRIs gave them the motivation to leave the house and socialize.

All in all, fat goth is right. The couple seems miserable because they don't have a stroller or a bag to put the Bible into. If be cranky if I had to carry around a toddler on a hot summer day.

Someone has to say it:

Sometimes when you've poured years into writing specific characters via fanfiction, tumblr analysis and whatnot it can start to feel like you own those characters.

If you’ve poured in thousands of unpaid work into discussing your theories and headcanons, it can feel like you own the setting.

Sunk cost fallacy and all that. Doubly so if this is something you've been hyperfixated on since middle school.

It can be very easy to forget that those fictional characters or IP do not belong to you. You might own the fanfiction or essays you wrote about them, but not the characters in question.

This was something older fans of the 90s to early 2010s seemed to have understood a lot more than the current iteration of fandoms do.

Many modern fandoms feel compelled to harass show runners, studios and authors just because their headcanons didn't come true.

The parasocial fandoms of today should be studied; the idea of going after staff would have earned you a negative reputation all around. Nowadays, it’s much more normalized.

My advice if you're disappointed by how a series turned out?

Take it as your sign to write some non-fanfiction. Imagine the worlds you could create that align more with your views and interests!
