Been a minute (or a year? more? :p) since I posted here but I'd just like to make a statement more than a headcanon - or rather, a wishful thinking headcanon!

Just... the possibilities of S.H.I.E.L.D. under Deke Shaw.

S.H.I.E.L.D. is decimated, but the chronicoms are gone, they have the knowledge to root HYDRA, and they have Deke. If there’s one thing Deke has it is an incredibly detailed memory of the timeline. Show him tech, he memorizes it, a song, he knows the year of release and lyrics. In a year, Deke built a tech empire. In a year, he became a rock star. What can he do with a secret organization?

HYDRA’s greatest asset is its secrecy. It is in the shadows, and now it is not— and what the chronicoms did destroyed S.H.I.E.L.D.— but S.H.I.E.L.D. is Hydra, and they are destroyed with it. But when you cut off one head, two more grow back, and Hydra won’t go down without fighting.

That said, maybe some things are always meant to happen, and maybe Hydra pulls out one of their greatest weapons out of the ice. And Director Shaw responds with the one thing (man) who can neutralize him.

Steve Rogers’ re-introduction to the world comes decades early and years too late— too late to save his friends and Peggy who died in the chronicoms’ attack. But there is still someone he can save. And he does. (There’s still an adjustment period, for both men. It is helped, in part, by learning one of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s closest guarded secrets— Director Shaw is also a man out of time).

Having a rock star for the director of a secret organization leads to interesting outcomes. Deke was right that it was a great way to get intel, and in the beginning of rebuilding it is an asset. Howard Stark, who survived (and will survive), introduces Deke to his greatest fan, a brilliant young man trying to fill giant shoes, and Deke is one of the first people who gets Tony.

Hydra falls decades before, and Natasha Romanov— rescued from the Red Room as a child, still S.H.I.E.L.D.’s greatest spy— never has a reason to doxx the agency. If she had, however, the knowledge that rock god Deke Shaw was also a secret agent would blow people’s minds. It certainly does to all the new recruits who come through the Academy. (And they don’t even know the whole truth. Some things come to light when the timelines finally merge. Others are better left buried, or on planets far away.)

In the nineties, the Kree come knocking, and S.H.I.E.L.D. is encountering this threat for the first time, but the director isn’t. (Hydra is obviously bad, and Malick was personal. But the Kree shaped the first thirty years of his life, they tore his family apart. Two timeline changes and ten (eighty) years doesn’t change that. This is personal for Director Shaw.)

There’s almost four decades until the point in time Deke left in the twenty-first century, three until the world becomes aware of the threat of extraterrestrial forces. Deke Shaw isn’t the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. forever, but his successor, an agent who reminds him of old friends, who fought the aliens who killed his mother, is left with the tools (and knowledge) he needs to deal with the great battles to come.

He watches people. Two orphaned brothers, a young girl in Columbia. A pair of new agents. He doesn’t interfere— at least not so much they won’t be the great agents and good people they grow to be. And some things— some terrible things— still happen. But when the world gets too dark, he brings a little light back into it.

That said, former Director Shaw becomes extremely invested in the lives of two scientific prodigies at the Academy. Because this is a universe where Hydra was rooted out, a universe where John Garrett never recruits Grant Ward, where Fitz never confesses his love to Simmons at the bottom of the ocean. Because in every universe, his Nana and Bobo belong together, they just need a push in the right direction.

In this timeline, it takes almost forty years for Deke to reach the present. A lifetime. As he watches and rebuilds and prepares, maybe he is able to share it with someone, with others. His family is gone, but he’s good at building things from memory.
