So I just got done watching “My Fair Lady” with my grandmother (she’ll be 80 in September), and here are some of my thoughts.
(Initially, because I had only seen one particular clip of this cockney-accented lady shouting at a horse race) ‘this is going to be a romantic movie where a lady is trained by her betrothed to act ladylike in front of his family and colleagues and she’s gonna learn that in the end she was perfectly fine the way she is and she should be herself.’
Also me: *realizes this film was released in 1964*
‘I’m going into this blind, aren’t I?’
*seeing the film*: the COSTUMES! The ACTING! Audrey Hepburn being a Goddess of film!
(Also shoutout to the Amazon Prime subtitle team for making this movie accessible to my grandmother who was nervous she wouldn’t enjoy seeing it again due to her hearing loss)
…the ending…: WHAT?!?WHAT DO YOU SHE ENDS UP WITH THAT ASSHOLE?! “Fetch me my slippers” MY ASS!!!! What happened to that energy while you were having tea with his mother?! What happened to marrying Freddy?! (Although I don’t think he was much better seeing as he WAITED OUTSIDE WHERE SHE WAS STAYING) And what about Mr. Pickering?! He always treated her nicely, he could have set her up with a flower shop like she wanted, made sure she was secure away from the ASSHOLE! He could have been the father she certainly deserved!
I’d like to note I commend the actor who plays the asshole, (Rex) because he somehow managed to make me respect him as an actor while despising his role.
Literally every woman Eliza interacts with is like, “girl, you are worth so much more than what this man is treating you” but the ASSHOLE is like “I’m going to sing like, 3 songs about qualities I hate in women even though I’m literally exhibiting said traits throughout the film and not changing my behavior-oh, and when I do realize my behavior matches my songs, I’m going to blame it on the ‘wench/baggage/THING/guttersnipe’!”
But…I did enjoy the film. I enjoyed watching it and the resulting conversation with my grandma. She despises Titanic because of its ending but will sit through what she enjoys. I can do the same with My Fair Lady. Even if I disagree with her that it is a love story.
