what genuinely derails me every time i rewatch the byler rain fight is how shamelessly it mirrors the eyewitness confrontation, not just in dialogue, but in blocking and colour language. it’s almost academically brazen.
mike’s “it’s not my fault you don’t like girls” is already a near perfect echo of lukas’ “i’m not gay like you,” but when you layer in the staging? the physical distance, the angles, the emotional geography of one character cornered while the other lashes out in panic, it’s the same scene wearing a different wig. and the colouring? the cold, desaturated palette, the rain acting as both emotional amplifier and visual veil, the way the light isolates their faces in that same bruised, blue grey register. it’s not homage. it’s replication without interrogation.
eyewitness used that moment to dissect internalised homophobia and the violence of denial. it was purposeful, character driven, and thematically coherent. stranger things lifts the emotional architecture, the queer ache, the projection, the wound, but refuses to engage with the implications. they borrow the queer pain but not the queer narrative responsibility.
and the fact that mike never apologises? from a storytelling standpoint, it’s wild. you don’t stage a scene that charged, that visually and emotionally loaded, and then just… abandon the fallout. it’s an unresolved injury masquerading as character tension, and honestly, it’s infuriating.
remember when this was all we had
those were the days man so peak
yeah, so this is vile
i can’t even begin to describe how disgusting and tone deaf it is to have your canonically queer character close out their arc by comforting their abuser because “we are all human at the end of the day and they, too, were victims of abuse at one point or another.”
this is the type of cliché character development script writers would give school bullies with less than ideal home lives, NOT the type of redemption you give your predatory, psychopathic, villain
fuck right off with this shit.
my epilogue
the concept of michael wheeler witnessing chappell roan perform “good luck, babe!” at the vmas in full paladin drag
You can end the cycle El! You don’t have to kill yourself to release yourself from the trauma of abuse!
Kills herself
Look for these signals! Complete these steps! You can love yourself AND be loved! You’re not “different” and you WILL fall in love!
Literally nothing happens
You’re the heart! You ARE needed! You don’t have to become your father and mope around for the rest of your life!
Take a wild guess
“Byler wasn’t queerbait” mfs when I pull up receipts
Literal. Literal queer erasure, I’m losing my fucking mind, what is wrong with them
EDIT: guys, this isn’t a fan thing, this is an IMAGE IN THE CREDITS.
Byler not being endgame is lowkey extremely painful from Mike's pov. He couldn't say ily to the supposed love of his life in her "final" moments, never finds out about the painting lie that literally saved his crumbling relationship, heteronormativity killed his longest, softest friendship, never finds out about how will's feelings for him gave him powers, never gets to escape the cycle of conformity, never got to make his own choices, never got to break free from the narrative he was chained to. RIP mike wheeler, you could've been so much
SO. Lumax got their movie date. Jopper got their Enzos date. But the one other couple who was promised a DATE just vanished with no explanation and... was never seen again? And it just turns out that couple is our ONLY representation of queer love? riiiiight i see
halfway through the finale realising they're just going to dumb will's character down to being the gay one who got over a straight crush and they're going to dumb mike's character down to the one who misses el lol
i'm gonna paint a picture for you guys really quickly okay... guy has girl and best friend... guy has more chemistry with best friend than girl... marketing promotes guy and best friend together... fans become dedicated to guy x best friend... guy and girl declare their love in the last minute of the show and girl dies to save world after they kiss... guy mourns her forever and gets a deadbeat job... best friend leaves and continues to thrive...
okay so is this voltron or stranger things?
