Camille Claudel in her workshop (1887).

In 1884, a year after her first exhibiton she became a trainee under Rodin. Her roles would also include his assistant, muse, model and confidante. In 1885 Camille became an official collaborator of Rodin’s and with her friend Jessie worked in his studio. During her time with Rodin she helped him complete such pieces as Burghers of Calais in 1895 and Gates of Hell, 1900.

Reflections on a breakup

The first time you left I wanted you to be happy, but mostly I wanted you to be happy with me. That’s how I knew I still loved you and that I was so desperately hopelessly in love with you. Every breath was painful without you in my life but still wanted you to be happy.

This time when you left, I was angry. I threw all of our things away. All of your things. But I still wanted you to be happy and again I knew that I loved you but this time I knew that it wasn’t desperate or hopeless it was a pure, kind, and gentle love because you were the first person I ever gave my heart to and even though you gave it back you will always have a special place there. I will always love you. But I will never be in love with you again.

An now a few months later I’ve given my heart to another boy and I pray that he will be gentle with it. And he is. And I know that I love him. And I know that I love you but now in a very different way.
