WaniKani Kanji Cheatsheets

After finishing level 1 in WaniKani, I wanted to make a “cheatsheet” with all of the kanji and vocabulary words. I also wanted a colorful but simple writing practice sheet, but I couldn’t find exactly what I wanted online - so I decided to make that too! The colors and grids in these sheets are inspired by the wonderful educational materials made by HappyLilac.

Here is what the summary sheet looks like! Each kanji has its corresponding pronunciations below it (on'yomi readings in katakana as these are derived from Chinese, and kun'yomi readings in hiragana as these were developed in Japan). Then, the vocabulary comes after. I might add furigana above the words with unexpected readings, like 下さい which is read as ください and not したさい, for instance.

…And here’s a preview of the first page of the writing sheets! There will be 4 kanji per sheet, and since level 1 has 18 kanji, it’ll be 5 sheets total. I’ll be adding stroke order guides too!

Making sheets like these for all 60 levels of WaniKani will certainly be a massive undertaking. Just making the summary sheet for level 1 took me a few hours! I have, however, made templates for both, so it’s just a matter of copy/pasting and moving things around to fit in the template.

I’m considering making materials for levels 1 through 3 free, as WaniKani has made these levels free-to-try without a subscription. Then, perhaps I’ll make the rest of the materials for the remaining levels available for purchase online. I have been interested in opening an online shop for a while now, so this could be a good opportunity for a first item! (Naturally, I won’t keep the “Wani Kani” part in there, for obvious copyright reasons.)

I could, for instance, arrange the materials by level, say 10 levels at a time all together in one PDF. Alternatively, I could group it all together into a single PDF with clickable bookmarks to each level’s material. However, a PDF file with all 60 levels in it would be an immense file, so perhaps breaking it up into smaller files with 10 levels per file would be better…

So, India is dying.

Look, I know a good number of you are from the US and things aren't amazing there either, but my country is literally on the brink of collapse. So I'd love it if we could talk about that for a minute.

A second COVID wave has taken out the healthcare system. There are no more hospital beds. There's an oxygen shortage. There's a critical vaccine shortage. The Central Government has thrown its hands up and is passing the baton to the State Governments to do what they can.

There are over 16 million covid cases. A record 330,000 new cases reported yesterday - comparable to the US at its peak. 187,000 dead as of today.

There is no plan.

Mass cremations are taking place. The cremation grounds are running day and night and they are short on wood. People are watching their loved ones die while waiting for a hospital bed, and then they're unable to give them the proper burial rights.

Hospitals are overwhelmed. Patients are being confined, two to a bed. They're the lucky ones.

We are on the verge of people dying in the streets.

This is the second-most populous country in the world. The largest democracy. A country that encapsulates over 15,000 years of recorded human history and has endured everything from famine to invasion to colonisation.

We might be at the end. This might be the thing that does us in.

People are dying.

People are dying.

People are dying and there is no plan.

More good news? Variants are popping up. A double mutation strain has shown up. It is resistant to current vaccines. This will not go away. This is the devastation they warned of when the anti-maskers were out protesting the minor inconvenience of covering their face in public.

My country is on the verge of an emergency state. Our government has failed us. This is as dire a situation as it ever could be.

Look. I don't do much with my life. I write fics, some of you have read them and that's pretty much it. I spend my days with my head in the clouds because that's where I like to be.

But two days ago, my grandmother tested positive, had to be taken to hospital and the ambulance caught fire.

She barely made it to the urgent care she needs.

So, here I am, using whatever meager platform I have to cobble this request together. Because I have to do something.

Ever since the coverage of the shootings began, I’ve been obsessively checking the news for updates on the victims. The name and the image of the shooter were plastered EVERYWHERE, but nothing about the victims. It took THREE DAYS for us to learn all of the victims’ names.

Something like a dam burst inside me once the final names were released and I couldn’t stop crying. 6 of the women were Asian immigrants. They were somebody’s mother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, grandma. They could have been MY mother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, grandma. I see their names and I think of how much they must have given up to come to America and how much xenophobia and racism they endured, just like my own parents. My parents didn’t immigrate just for fun, they were escaping communism and they desperately wanted better opportunities for themselves and their families. These victims suffered so much to earn a place in American society and now it’s been cruelly taken away.

Unfortunately, their families will continue to feel pain and suffering despite the victims’ best attempts to provide them better lives.

I don’t want to put qualifications as to why anyone should care about the pain the AAPI community is in right now. (ex. If you like kpop or anime or Asian cultures, you should support AAPIs!) Honestly, if you are a human being capable of basic sympathy and/or empathy, you should care. But the fact of the matter is, I see very, very little being shared about the shootings and I’m greatly disappointed in the kpop fandom. I know tumblr is not the place to be getting news, everyone is dealing with pandemic exhaustion, maybe people are trying to give grace to AAPIs and not talk over them, etc.

But like….just 2 days before the shootings, everyone was chatting about how racist the Grammys were by using BTS fans to get their ratings up, but refusing to give BTS an award (which is also a valid discussion). Where did everybody go?? You don’t have the ability to reblog a few support links here and there? You were ready to fight over the Grammys, but not for racial equality?

I’m truly astounded by the stifling silence and genuinely hurt by the kpop fandom. You guys know BTS is Asian, right? Or do you only view Asians as a source of entertainment and not actual people in your community??

To be honest, I’ve been struggling with processing my feelings with these recent events. Growing up, I was taught to suffer in silence. My parents would give advice like if you ignore the problem, it will eventually go away. Keep your head down, work hard, and you’ll get by just fine. Someone else always has it worse than you so don’t complain.

But at what point do we allow ourselves to acknowledge our pain and suffering? I’ve been called slurs and hit on by gross men with Asian fetishes and all I could really do was keep my distance so that they wouldn’t hurt me. In the back of my mind, I always knew something worse could happen to me than these seemingly minor incidents, but I never felt I had a “right” to be upset – you know, since I was still alive – until now. Until members of our community started dying. It’s unfortunate that the conversation about anti-Asian racism is only starting now, when we’ve been dealing with aggressions for the past 150+ years.

To my fellow AAPIs, I want you to know I am here for you and I acknowledge your pain. Thank you for reading this.

The Japanese language has a large inventory of sound symbolic or mimetic words, many of them are used in spoken Japanese as well. These ae used to describe an action/ or a sound that an action produces or just a state of smth based on its taste or appearance.

Here's my list of onomatopoeia in Japanese but there are many many more- remember that you can write these in both hiragana as well katakana, whichever you want to use.

i already made a tweet about this but i think i should also talk about this here. here’s what’s currently happening in egypt:

in may, the teenager posted a tiktok video of herself sobbing, her face bruised and swollen, saying she’s been raped. instead of treating her as a victim, authorities jailed her, charging her with “debauchery” for wearing clothes they deemed immoral and with misusing social media. justice remains uneven for women and often hinges on their social class and wealth. an inadequate penal code, few prosecutions of sexual attackers, weak sexual harassment policies and harsh morality laws have worked to silence women.

on july 1, women in egypt took to social media accusing an affluent egyptian student of rapes and sexual assaults. nearly 50 accusers had come forward, and the number eventually exceeded 100. the alleged assaults and harassment began in 2016, according to women on social media. some women, including minors, said they met the young man in person or online when he was studying. others crossed paths with him at the american university in cairo.

after the social media fury, egyptian authorities arrested the man. in a five-page statement, the country’s prosecutor said the man admitted to meeting at least six young women online on different social media platforms. the prosecutor also made allegations that he said the young man denied, including that he threatened to send revealing photos of women to their families if they did not have sex with him or if they left the relationship.

since the man’s arrest, other alleged sexual offenders have been accused. they include mohamed nagy, a well-known activist, who was dismissed by his organization after it said he admitted to sexually harassing women on his facebook page. he apologized to his victims, blaming his actions on his “bad upbringing and the society around him.” he declined to comment when reached by telephone.

another rights group said it suspended an employee for sexual misconduct, and authorities detained a well-known publisher after he was accused of sexual harassment. which he denied in a facebook post. victims have also opened up about being abused at elite schools and in churches.

the social media campaign also prompted the government to amend the country’s criminal law to give judges the authority to protect the identity and personal details of sexual assault victims. the bill, which has been submitted to parliament for approval, raises hopes that more women will come forward to expose abuses. many universities and workplaces have either weak or no sexual harassment policies.

egypt’s penal code is sorely in need of amendments to better protect rape and assault survivors. there still isn’t a law that criminalizes domestic violence, despite years of promises by officials to address this legal gap. existing laws to punish sexual offenders have not always been enforced.

then there are the recent arrests over tiktok videos. authorities have targeted a number of women, accusing them of spreading immorality and debauchery and of violating egyptian family values. their “crime”: dancing and wearing what the authorities deemed were suggestive or revealing clothes. the prosecutor’s office is compelling el-Adham to undergo a “virginity test” to determine whether she has ever had vaginal intercourse. el-Adham refused to consent to the procedure when the prosecutor requested it earlier in the case.

-His wife ditched him and asked for 900k a year,

-He was sexually assaulted which he said kicked him into a deep depression
