mixed feelings<3 but enough interest remains to have listened to the song, and yes i do have thoughts.........lyrics aside, because they remain an easy target ;/ justin tranter had a hand in writing them and his pop music philosophy is entirely antithetical to mine. more below the cut<3

pinky up is a techno/pop genre mishmosh, kind of interesting, but not terribly well executed beyond the verses. lead synth is likely from the widely recognizable eurobeat single Meet Her At The Loveparade by Da Hool.

top down: the 16th note percussive intro is boring and we drop out of the melody to reprise it under every chorus which is notttt an avant garde beat change, it's lazy composition and butchers the flow. this is a major structural issue in the song which i will get into momentarily, but let me be positive for a sec.

the verse is technically faultless for standard issue pop, discounting the lyricism (i will leave commentary on That to my good mutual @mozzpatch). for those interested in harmonic function, the song is composed in Eb maj so the verse (triads: Eb-Cm-Ab-Eb) progresses I-vi-IV-I. i like the excess vocal reverb + slight distortion over base synth, the sound is very icona-pop-summer revival and it suits megan <- i look forward to hearing live clips

the pre-chorus is an inversion of the axis progression. it functions as a pre-chorus should, providing a minor tone shift before the chorus. the high register is perfect for sophia and lara. it's unique in that it begins with the submediant (iv) and progresses through subdominant (IV) -> tonic (I) -> dominant (V) to a submediant (iv) pre-resolution (PRE-resolution).

pre-resolutions are typically used to create anticipation for a full resolution in the following progression. instead, sophia is cut short by the painfully repetitive chorus before the 3rd chord (of 5 in the progression). 1: cruel and unusual reduction of Sophia-In-My-Ear-Time 2: provides us with nothing but a structurally compromised song.

i'm sorry to repeat criticisms cuz this is very similar to my previous katspost, but empty pluck percussion is BLAND! hybe needs to stop using it before this becomes a katseye calling card. if they repaired the melody-less intro/chorus and composed some better lyrics, they would have a generically decent pop song :100:
