DENA - ‘Things That Mean A Lot’

Years ago, when I first started writing about music on I Heart Moosiq, I came across a Bulgarian artist named DENA, and I became insanely obsessed with her song “Cash, Diamond Rings, Swimming Pools”, which I still love to this day. It’s a wonderfully spunky and endearing song that immediately reminded me of early M.I.A. and now in retrospect, also reminds me of MØ. Re-visit the still awesome music video for the track below. DENA, now based out of Berlin, has been MIA (pun intended) from the scene for a very long time, so we were thrilled when we saw that she’d signed a new record deal and released new track Imaginary Friends, on which she goes an extra dance-y route, blending 90s inspired hypnotic house and smooth R&B with her entrancing drawl. You know what would be really cool? If Yaeji and DENA collaborated, or if Yaeji re-mixed Imaginary Friends. Tell me that wouldn’t be a sweet treat. Imaginary Friends is out now via Mansions and Millions.

DENA - TRUST

DENA encapsulates her new EP Trust perfectly on the title’s track key lyric: "You can take it all / but you cannot have my trust no more" - it’s a little less flashy (hence the title of her debut LP Flash) and feels like her most personal work to date. Even though the glitters are gone, it sure doesn’t lack in spark: central this time are the lyrics and faux production, which is just rough enough to have that cool sloppy vibe but bright enough to get you going. In a way they all sound like demos, but DENA has never sounded more on the verge of something big.
