Just as soon as things started, it was all over. Guzma's heart was still pounding with the threat of death hiding away, the adrenaline that flooded his body subsiding, which caused him to fall onto the ground. His mind was a slush of mixed emotions. One part fury and humiliation from needing to be saved in the first place, the other was a warmth in his chest, gratitude with a few drops of confusion.
Gray hues studied his saviors, a noble and strong fighting type that reminded him of a certain old mustached man from back home in Alola. Yet the trainer... he hadn't met someone like her before. The people of his region all sported a disgusted look in their eyes whenever they set their gaze upon him. Even when his mistake nearly cost her life, her eyes looked upon him with a kindness he hadn't felt in years.
Rising from his grassy seat, he spent a few seconds patting off the few blades on his pants.
"You got that right, I'll have to consider retiring my hobby of cliff hanging near exploding pokemon." Scratching the back of his head, he finally let out a sigh of relief. "You saved my skin back there, both of you. Just gotta say, well, thanks and stuff... I'm visiting from Alola just for a bit to find a way for my pokemon to get stronger."
The former skull's mind darted around trying to think of a way to show his gratitude. He was a lot of things, but ungrateful was not one of them. Finally, a bulb lit up. A hand shuffled through his pocket to pull out rare candy. "Here, for that badass of a Pokémon of yours. I like to think my life is worth at least one of these." In the distance, the sound of his Golispod's cry could be heard; it must have been close to lunch time. Happy to be alive and on solid ground, he shined a genuine smile towards the stranger.
"The name's Guzma by the way. Why don't you join us for lunch? I got some good stuff cookin over back at camp, and I'm sure my guys would love to meet a couple of real-life heroes. It's just right over there." The campsite by one of the Soccarat trail's ponds was now brimming with Guzma's pokemon, longing for both a full belly and the sight of their trainer.
dendra can't help but laugh at guzma's wry quip, her gaze still bright as she claps the visitor enthusiastically on the back. "well! faced with certain doom, and he's still got jokes!" she crows, beaming. "nice to meetcha, guzma! all the way from alola, huh...wow."
dendra trails off as chu accepts the candy with a gurgled bow, a hand casually resting on her hip. "you really didn't have to, but we appreciate the power-up...!" the battle instructor thanks with a bow of her own, her stomach gurgling loudly as she straightens up. "aaaaand, you know what? lunch sounds fantástico right now, actually--we'll take you up on that. yeah, yeah--I can finish up my route later! oh, also--"
she whirls back towards guzma with a wink, still brimming with that unstoppable energy, "--welcome to paldea! you call it heroism, I just call it helping out. it's what we do around here!"
without prompting, chu has started to rumble down the path towards guzma's campsite, fixated on that promised meal. dendra trots behind at a slower pace, waiting for her newest pal to fall into lockstep.
"so," she declares. "give me the deets! if you're training around casseroya and ignored all the warning signs, you must be pretty strong, huh? and alolan, too...wow. jealous. the travel shows that I watch make it look like paradise--is it really like that? because let me tell you, I dream about biting into one of those malasadas--"
dendra continues to chat away, overflowing with vigor as they head into camp. she's unstoppable, for better or for worse, in every sense of the word.
"heeeee...I can't believe I actually got published in ¡HOLA paldea! unreal...!"
dendra happily pirouettes in a circle, clutching a copy tight to her chest. without hesitating, she purchases several more copies from the tiny mezagoza newsstand. "I've gotta get a copy for my parents. tuli. miriam. a big pile for the staff room...oh, who else am I forgetting?" the instructor grills the vendor like they should know, but there's no heat behind her question. just glee.
"well! I hope whoever reads this issue is inspired to kick into the new year with a fresh mindset! don't forget that I believe in you, no matter what! osu!"
Paldea was unlike any region he had been to. Filled with fascinating culture and traditions, delicious food, and not to mention the mandated siestas, were a beautiful addition to any daily routine. The former skull had journeyed to this stunning landscape in search of a way to enhance the performance of his team.
The amber forest above Casseroya Lake seemed as good a place as any to set up for lunch. A fire was made, cooking gear for the fiery spaghetti meal he planned was all set, all he needed was just some local spices to give the food the kick it needed.
With his team back at the resting spot, Guzma patrolled the cliffs, focusing on the hunt. So much so, he felt a sudden -THUD- and crashed over the bagworm pokemon. The tumble forced him off the edge of the cliff. With all his might, he grabbed onto the edge, barely holding on for dear life. The young man's predicament worsened, as the steel-type Pokémon was infuriated at him, rays of light radiated from the creature, an explosion was imminent.
"Shit-shit-shit-shit." Panic washed over him, a freezing sweat ran throughout his body, and his grip loosened. Guzma was done for. "Fuck it all... JUST BLOW UP ALREADY!"
Before the Forettress finished him off, a pokemon use a strange move on the steel-type, launching it into the air. Stunningly enough, the trainer attacked as well, sending an explosion far off to where no one would be hurt.... Guzma couldn't begin to appreciate what had happened due to his grip starting to fail. With a cry, he called out,
for fitness fanatics like dendra, CASSEROYA LAKE is a dream. it's paldea's most extreme obstacle course--a sprawling, deceptively glassy lake pockmarked with pointy islands, surrounded by soccarat trail's rolling bluffs...
...and filled to the brim with dangerous pokemon.
while beautiful, this vast area is not near the top of paldea's sightseeing requirements. it's the kind of place that will devour the unprepared--trainers who are looking for any form of relaxation won't find it here, not with the waters roiling with veluza, or the long soccarat grasses teeming with toedscruel and skuntank, amongst other...typically cranky guests.
dendra runs this trail every week. (after all, she's not just any old trainer.)
the battle studies instructor is taking her usual route when a sudden commotion interrupts the routine. before her heightened senses can even make sense of anything, chu is out of his ball and rumbling towards the scene. man hanging on edge of cliff, handling things with... the expected level of calm. rogue forretress about to...about to...yikes.
without hesitation, dendra launches from her sprint like a runner hot off the starting block. the forretress is massive (probably an alpha variant, by the looks of it), but he's still no match for chu. the dependable hariyama vital throws the angry bagworm far away just as dendra arrives. cue the distant explosion.
still, one issue begets another, and dendra's attention is quickly drawn to guzma losing his purchase on the cliff. taking a deep inhale, she lunges forward without hesitation, catching guzma's wrist with that steady, deep-seated strength. dendra can't tug him up, of course, but her reckless moxie at least buys a few precious seconds. her athletic shoes skid for a grounded foothold, and she's in danger of following guzma over...until chu manages to wrap his trainer up in those giant mitts, hauling them both to safety. classic, reliable chu.
once released, dendra winces and rubs her wrist, chest heaving from exertion. miriam's gonna give her an earful for this, but she'd done the right thing. the instructor peers sideways at guzma with a cheeky grin, hands resting on her thighs as she gets her wind back.
"hey...you good? that could've been a bit scary, huh?" dendra shakes her head before casting a sidelong grin at guzma. "lucky I was around! you're pretty deep into the trail...it's no place for trainers to be wandering around. or, y'know..." she winks, "...hanging off cliffs."
"soooo, just visiting? you don't seem like you're from around here." dendra wrinkles her nose, trying to remember what tulip had told her once. "you've got a different, uh...aura about you. yeah!"
Despite her ‘Battle Studies’ title, Dendra still prefers hand-to-hand sparring over Pokemon battles. She is an extremely skilled trainer and can hold her own against any of her colleagues (even Hassel!), but despite having studied optimal strategy and nearly every move effect, her fiery spirit tends to take over in the heat of battle, leading to some…reckless decisions.
Dendra tries to study as many battles as possible, always open to learning new training/battle strategies and styles for teaching purposes. She’ll often sit in on Elite Four battles and take notes (when she’s not being shushed for cheering too loudly!) Over school breaks, Dendra often travels to other regions to learn more about their respective battling tactics (and try their delicious food.)
Due to the way it ended, Dendra doesn’t like to talk much about her karate career on the world’s junior competitive circuit. While she still keeps her body trained in elite condition, she loves teaching more than anything and is 100% invested in the well-beings of her students and colleagues.
If it weren’t for Nurse Miriam or Tulip, Dendra would be in major trouble healthwise. Even with Miriam patching her up on the regular (bless her) and Tulip coaching her to be less impulsive, Dendra routinely pushes herself right to the brink of her limits, resulting in many training accidents. When she’s rushing around outside of the ‘ring,’ she’s also a bit of a klutz, which doesn’t help matters either.
Dendra is the academy’s designated ‘errand runner’ for smaller things, like delivering lunches or dropping off mail. This isn’t a demotion-type thing–Dendra is super-reliable, seemingly always willing to help her colleagues…and fast. Plus, these errands give her an opportunity to check in with some high-ranking people (the professors, Geeta, Director Clavell, etc.) and talk their ears off.
Dendra loves jumping headfirst into Tera Raid Battles. She has a growing collection of beautiful Tera Shards from her conquests.
If she asks you to join up for a workout session, there’s a 50% chance that Dendra will try to bench press you. She absolutely can too.
mun never equals muse, but I'm super excited to pick up dendra again!! her personality is a lot closer to my own. she's so joyful and always tries to give 110%, and I missed writing characters like her. we'll see where this goes!
this time around, I will be trying to focus less on dendra's cooking...struggles. what started as a gag kind of became her whole identity (my fault.) while jabs are still allowed--and I will be mentioning her culinary journey of course, I want to focus more on developing the other aspects of her character too! (mr. saguaro's classes are helping!)
I first wrote dendra when I was powering through grad school night classes and teaching, and I think it's important to note that dendra is on the verge of earning her own battle studies doctorate while doing the same thing. she's smart.
I also eventually want to write more about dendra's previous injury interrupting what would've been a successful karate career (as someone who was pretty involved in sports before tanking a similar injury.) she's bounced back and come a long way since then. so have I.
I probably will be putting out an interactions or maybe even a meme at some point, but for now, please send something in via ask or IM if you want to do something! picking up dendra does not mean forsaking my other threads at all, and I want to manage my levels heading into '26. expect activity on this blog to vary, as the others do.
ㅤ trips to mesagoza were few & far between⸻ someone called out last minute & desperately needed a substitute for one of their stations. it was an excuse to drive down the mountain, take the scenic route in the height of the night. but mesagoza swelters when the sun rises.
ㅤ silene stakes her break with her back pressed against a cold vending machine in the shade, lemonade half finished, sat next to a panting pawmot⸻ she's her own drink. a woman approaches with laboring breath⸻ product of exercise rather than heat— exhaustion. the nurse hums to catch attention, holding out an unopened lemonade; she got an extra. it's still cold, save your money.
with her gratitude rasped between panted breaths, dendra takes the lemonade and presses the cold bottle against her sweaty forehead, plopping down next to silene and pawmot without hesitation. "bwuh. running those stairs...never gets any easier...hah..."
and with a sweaty swipe across her brow, dendra gulps down nearly all of the drink. her leg jounces even while sitting, the lemonade seemingly powering her up in real time. "ahh...whew! I gotta remember to start working out earlier in the summer. if it hadn't been for you, I would've totally melted. I uh..." there's a quick pat-down given to her dark tracksuit. "...dang. I must've forgot my wallet up at the office again, but I promise to pay your kindness back soon! osu!"
excited eyes brighten as silene receives dendra's rejuvenated attention. "saaaaay, I don't even think we've met before--I'm dendra! I'm the new battle studies teacher at the academy!" she beams proudly, bowing as she takes in silene's look with unabashed appreciation. "love your piercings! you don't happen to work at the center here, do you...?"
a sheepish look crosses dendra's expressive face, and she rubs at the back of her neck. "I'm very familiar with the mesagoza center staff. you might say I'm, uh...a little 'accident-prone.' heh."
One of the Saffron Fighting Dojo’s veteran Pokemon, Chu quickly became one of Dendra’s most trusted training partners during her time spent studying under Master Kiyo. With Kiyo’s permission, Chu decided to follow Dendra to her new job in Paldea, where he continues to serve as her teaching assistant, sparring partner, and number-one Pokemon confidant/ace. Although Chu is extremely strong, he is also very reserved and doesn’t like battling other Pokemon. He is very protective and will rumble to the aid of Dendra or anyone in danger without hesitation, especially children.
CAMI, the Medicham
One of the first new teammates in Paldea, Cami helps Dendra lead meditation and mindfulness classes at the academy. Very intelligent and controlled, she will often join Chu in trying to save Dendra from dangerous situations and reckless decisions (often to no avail.) Cami is also very close with the Medichams that Tulip oversees in Alfornada, and they often swap telepathic gossip on their respective trainers.
TUNO, the Tauros (Blaze Breed)
After nearly goring Dendra on her way to the academy, Tuno refused to be captured through traditional means. He only (reluctantly) agreed to join Dendra’s team after she proved that she could mount and ride him across the Paldean fields–a feat that took all day and many, many painful attempts. Controlling Tuno is a definite WIP. Fierce rivals with Rodos.
