L.A is the first city to synchronize all of its traffic lights.

The system, called ATSAC (Automated Traffic Surveillance and Control), connects nearly 4,400 signalized intersections across the city’s 469 square miles. It uses magnetic sensors embedded in the pavement at intersections to send real-time traffic data through fiber-optic cables to a control center, where software automatically makes second-by-second adjustments to optimize traffic flow.

The city is now working on next-generation systems for the 2028 Olympics that would allow vehicles to communicate directly with traffic lights using 5G technology.
