Supergirl: WoT (2021) - A Review

Honestly? I rarely review comic books, but this one’s an exception. Out of 5 stars, I’d give it the max.

Warning: might include spoilers, and will involve opinions from an unemployed teenager.

I heard of Tom King’s abysmal writing, and assumed that this would be similar. Apparently, I was wrong. This was a solid story, both in narration and character development. Many critique King for his portrayal of Kara, but I felt she had a fine balance throughout each issue. Yes, she’s a broken and traumatized woman, but she’s mature enough to know she’s still meant to be a symbol of hope. Throughout the book, she consistently helps Ruthye and more minor characters. King also wrote about Krypton in a memorable and emotional way, never failing to make me cry with each word about its destruction and its history.

Of course, a comic book is nothing without its visuals. I’d never heard of Bilquis Evely or Mat Lopes before, but now all I want to do is witness their creations. I loved the detail put into the characters and the backgrounds, and I loved the colours that complimented it. Many of the scenes pulled me into the book, easily placing me onto a Green Sun planet with dinosaurs, or a white and magicless void. Really, if you wish to see some art, look at the attached issue covers or read the book! Issue #6 was one of my favourites because it has been so visually striking, and it’s almost disappointing when I watch the trailer for the upcoming film.

I mean, here is a book that is just chock full of colour that’s almost reminiscent of technicolour, yet its film adaptation just looks… dull. Yes, I’m well aware it’s a trailer, but would it kill James Gunn to add something? Anyway, I digress.

tl;dr - woman of tomorrow is really good and you should read it. also we should add colour to modern media.

the way clark and jonathan have so so so so so so many arguments like this over the course of the show and even here with jonathan being like 'you're right' at the start of the conversation implying this is just one of eighty million times clark has defended lex's good intentions to his dad and defended his innocence and like hands and knees begged his dad to give the guy a chance ("if you keep slamming the door in his face over and over again you're going to turn him into this guy who hate") but jonathan kent is always like no. my whitney fordman homophobia instinct is screaming. i just know i would've strung him up in that cornfield as the scarecrow in a freshman hazing ritual clark, and i just can't trust a man like that!

him not knowing kryptonese whilst she's fluent?!? him calling it "kryptonian" as he's unaware of its actual label, and believing its the same label as their species?! him acting like every human when we don't understand a spoken language, only to realize that volume ≠ clarity and comprehension?!? her expression slightly sad as she's realized either he's not kal-el, or that her newborn cousin is actually a grown man whilst she's still a teenager?!?

i’m dying at your bvs reactions XD

IF you want, i strongly suggest watching the directors cut. there’s several scenes that just make the whole narrative stronger

but yeah it’s definitely a unique direction to take the characters. dceu is a bit of an acquired taste. reading susiecarter’s works on ao3 gave me a new appreciation for the films though- i feel like a lot of fans do a good job of unpacking the interpretations of the characters the films were going for

my friend and i agree that dceu has more of an elseworlds vibe and i feel like seeing it from that lens makes it better

i heard the snyder cut was better for both bvs and justice league, so i might check them out sometime. (preferably when i have around 4 hours to spare 😭)

i definitely see what snyder was trying to do, especially for superman. i think it's good to explore the guilt and grief that comes with death, but it kind of falls flat in bvs. some of the lines aren't terrible and hit really hard, especially lara talking about how she'll never see her son grow up. it's unfortunate that there's really really good scenes, but they're mostly hidden and ignored bc the rest of the film isn't that great.

having to imagine the movies as an elseworlds entry to fully enjoy it is crazy 😭 i've never heard of anyone doing that, but unfortunately i'll have to try it for my watch of justice league. i'll let you know if it works
