Do you think that Cas is stiil an angel?
Hello, dear!The short answer to this is certainly yes! Cas is still an angel. The long answer is more complicated than that.
Apparentlythe Empty decided to send Cas back to Earth in angel form (and with more fittingclothes and a nicer-looking trench coat, thank goodness!). Nothing in episodes13x06 or 13x07 seemed to suggest that Cas was no longer an angel. Even Asmodeus called Cas Lucifer’slap angel the last time we saw him on screen.
However, Ican’t miss the chance to say that Cas is no ordinary angel and, in fact, never has been.
In 8x21 welearned that Cas had been a rebel long before Dean Winchester came to exist. Castiel’shead had been washed clean since at least the time in Egypt when angels slewevery first-born infant whose door wasn’t splashed with lamb’s blood. A “famousspanner in the works”, Naomi called him. She said that Cas came off the line with a crack in his chassis and that he never completely did what he was told.
Castiel’sarc has been getting clearer little by little. He’s always been different fromthe rest of the angels, which means HE NEVER REALLY BELONGED IN HEAVEN.
In 8x17,Naomi told Cas these words, “You have tochoose, Castiel, us or them”, and of course Cas chose “them”, which in thiscase was Dean. Some episodes later Metatron tricked Cas and sent him back toEarth as human. And that’s when the big questions started.
In 9x06 Castold Ephraim that he wanted to live but got this question:
“But as what, Castiel? As an angel? Or a man?”
The answer to that question is Cas’ endgame. He didn’t answer at the time and hehasn’t done it yet because he’s still trying to figure out what he wants.
In 9x09Cas became an angel again, but when Dean asked him if he was okay with that, heonly said that if they were going to war, he needed to be ready.
In 9x22there was an angel (Josiah) who told Cas this, “You play at being noble. You play at being one of us. But I look intoyour eyes… And I don’t see an angel staring back at me.” Cas was definitelystill an angel at the time, but many of his brothers and sisters didn’t consider himone anymore, mostly after he gave up his army of angels for Dean.
Even though Cas told Hannah in 9x23 hejust wanted to be an angel, that wasn’t Cas’ answer to the question Ephraim had askedhim.
Castielhimself told Sam (in 10x03) that he saw Dean’s point when demon!Dean said hedidn’t want to be human. He said this, “Onlyhumans can feel real joy, but… also such profound pain. This is easier.”And we got this shot of Sam’s reaction:
I believeSam kind of realized that Cas was talking from experience. Cas probably was,considering that when he said in 9x23 that he just wanted to be an angel, he hadjust learned Metatron had killed Dean. Cas experienced so much pain while beinghuman (remember Ephraim was a Rit Zien and wanted to kill Cas because he heardCas’ pain and anguish). If Dean was dead, being an angel was a lot easier forCas.
To confirmthat Cas hadn’t truly answered his endgame question, Metatron pushed it furtherin 10x18 when he asked Cas this: “Howmany more rogue angels are there out there? And, what are you gonna do onceyou’re done with all that? Go back to Heaven? Please.” Metatron wasindirectly asking Castiel where he belonged. Heaven or Earth?
Cas triedheaven at the start of season 11. In 11x02 when he was asked the “what are you?”question, he said he was an angel of the Lord, to which his “brother” (who, bythe way, was torturing him and definitely wanted to kill him) replied: “That so? ‘Cause, near as I can tell, when youhave to choose between heaven and the Winchesters… You choose them. Every time.So, see, you’re not my brother.”
Casreceived confirmation once more that he didn’t belong in Heaven and was generally hatedthere anyway. So where did he belong? With the Winchesters?
Episodes 6and 10 must have been really painful for him. In the first one, Metatron toldCas that he was everyone’s tool, that he was manipulated and used by theangels, by his enemies and by his friends. And in the second one, Ambriel toldhim he was expendable, not a real hero, and Amara called him expendable too,weak and worthless. No wonder he ended up letting Lucifer possess him!
In 12x03 hewasn’t possessed by Lucifer anymore and Dean had called him their best friendand brother (11x23), but he still wasn’t sure he belonged with the Winchesters.It wasn’t until 12x12 that he realized his family really loved him. It wasn’tuntil 12x19 that he called the angels “my men” and the Winchesters “my friends,my family”. He probably began to understand where he belonged, so at least he wasn’tfeeling expendable and unloved when he had to face the Empty.
As he didback in 9x06 when he said he wanted to live, he fought for his life in 13x04, but he still hasn’t answered the most important question… if he wantsto be an angel or a man.
That’s why I’m100% sure that Cas is still a multidimensional wavelength of celestial intent(aka an angel), because the show has been building up his story arc for so long thatthe resolution will be something nobody could miss.
The closerwe get to Supernatural’s final season, the closer we’ll be of finding outCastiel’s answer. In the meantime, we can only speculate. If he doesn’t belongin Heaven anymore, if he’s always been an angel with a crack in his chassis,what could the writers possibly want us to interpret from all that?
PS: Sorry for such a long answer. I get too excited when talking about Cas.
