Detective Khoshekh is torn between their duty as an officer and the fact that those vigilantes undeniably get more results than that GCPD...

They've only recently been promoted to detective from a uniform cop. They value justice and fairness over anything else, and joining the GCPD is the only way they had to help people, and they can't stand people suffering.

They also have a black cat with white paws named Cecil :3 just for funsies. They love their boy very much

Detective Khoshek is nonbinary and goes by They/Them. They have purple eyes and black, short, slightly curly short hair with subtle dark purple and a few small white streaks in their hair. They are 22 years old. They're disgusted at the corruption in the GCPD, but there's not much they can do however much they try. They can't stand the casual suffering in this city, and do everything they can to help. Their morals are strong, but they fight scrappy.

Cockraoch came from her workplace with a big bag fully stacked with food containers. She and Detective Khoshek had managed to find a balance of speaking about their respective work without speaking about their respective work. It had been awkward at the beginning, but they had prevailed and now they had a comfortable non-commitment about speaking about their work, which worked for them.

The detective had healed nicely and was almost fully recovered. Cockraoach was glad to see the Detective, who became a somewhat close friend, pain-free. A scar was left, such was the nature of healing without any special ability, but otherwise the detective had recovered. They needed to work on their stamina and recover what was lost during the time of recovery, but that was the smallest issue.

"I'm back! And I brought food for the week!"

"Oh, hey!! Welcome back!"

They don't ask what else she was doing while she was out. They have a sort of silent agreement.

Their voice is somewhat strained. But when she rounds the corner into the living room, the coffee table is pushed aside and they're trying to do some of their physical therapy exercises. Their stomach and core is what lost the most strength, and they're shaking slightly as they do the movements. Definitely not as strong as they used to be, but they'll get there.

"What'd you get for this week?"

Cecil keeps stretching next to them and rubbing against them. Cats always seem to like body doubling and copying their owners. It's like he's trying to do it with me but doesn't know exactly what I'm doing.

"Boss had a fridge with pre-prepped meals to give out. I got them. Think he is stress-cooking and baking again. I also got meat for the crows. I swear, I will manage to bribe them into stopping the harassment of me!"

Cockraoch huffs in amusement when seeing Cecil copy the movements of Khoshek. It was endearing and made her smile. An honest smile, almost vulnerable.

"Cecil still klingy?"

"Hehe, yeah he's still pretty lovey. Cats can sense injuries. Actually, their purring can stimulate deep tissue healing. He's been laying on my tummy at night and purring like crazy. I think he knows."

They pause their movements to drink some water from the bottle they have nearby.

"You want help with the crows? I befriended a whole murder of them when I was a kid. You just gotta feed them the right stuff and be patient. Any nuts or seeds as long as they're unsalted, hard boiled or even raw eggs, unless you have chickens because then they'll start eating your chickens' eggs. Not that we have room for chickens anyway..nothing with garlic or any spices..actually, I'm willing to bet that if we went up to the community garden on the roof we could dig through some of the soil and find some grubs. They like those a lot, and grubs kill the plants anyway."

"Yeah, I think so too. Cats are smart and you were missing for a long while. He was bound to notice and know."

Cockroach puts all the containers away and then settles leaning on the doorframe. The place was not big enough to have her try to get to the little curtain corner where she slept. Not while the detective was doing their physical therapy.

"Funny thing about the crows. They only start harassing me when they see me from below. I never found out what exactly they don't like about me, but a friend explained it could be association from a feature I have. So not my fault, but nothing you can explain to them."

She hums in thought and takes out the new laptop she got. She had tinkered on it and was starting to set it up fully for her needs. She was pretty beat. She had spent most of the night awake and working and thus sufficiently tired, but it was a comfortable tired of work done and the promise of safe rest in the near future instead of the exhaustion of interrupted, restless sleep and haunting nightmares. Cockroach would even say it was the best rest she had ever had. She tilted her head before asking one of the few safe questions regarding their work.

"How is your recovery anyway? Are you allowed back into the office and field?"

"Ah, sorry. I can move to my room."

They stand up carefully and push the coffee table back to where it usually is, careful not to bump Cecil.

"Recovery's going pretty well actually. The wound's fully healed, and I'm regaining strength fast, but just as protocol they don't want me coming back to work until I get my old strength back. It should only be another two weeks or so as long as I keep up with my recovery training."

Once the coffee table is back in its normal spot, they step aside so she can get to her makeshift room.

"From below..? Crows shouldn't have an issue with just anyone unless there's something really out of the ordinary or something they see as a threat...are you comfortable telling me what it is?"

"Hey, no it is ok..."

Cockroach rushes to help with the table. She was in no rush to get into bed and she knew the space freed with the pushed-over coffee table was better for the physical therapy exercise anyway.

"Hm, interested in working on a case anyway? I heard you had contact with my boss about the clown. I have gathered some news. And regarding the crows, I don't know. Merry suggests it may be false association. Like someone with long blond hair attacking them and all people with long blond hair are now the evil ones... But something visible from here, but not from above or behind, makes them not like me."

Cockroach indicates her front, from feet to head.

"Yeah, a case would be fun. I can't go out in the field yet, it's been so boring. And crows can be retrained. They remember faces of people that are nice to them."

They shuffle over and drop onto the couch to take a break between exercises.

"Your boss? I did contact someone about the issue of Joker getting ahold of Scarecrow's toxin...you're working for Red Hood now?"

They don't seem offended or accusing, just curious. They don't usually ask about her work, but it seems like it could be relevant to the case.

"Hm, mentioned it to keep you awake when I applied pressure on your wound. Anyway, I want the clown gone and be able to fully move without fear of being observed and getting people into the crossfire."

Cockroach settles with her laptop at their side and pulls up what she already has.

"Clown's been busy. The last Joker Venom victim found has a tidbit in the autopsy you may want to have a look at. It's the second-to-last missing cook of Scarecrows as well."

Cockroach opens the autopsy file and scrolls to the toxicologic analysis. The Joker Venom was clearly marked as the cause of death and was present in high quantities, but a note had been made about unusually high amounts of fear toxin. Cockroach had that part highlighted and a note on it, describing how it shouldn't be this high, especially for a goon of Scraecrows. Cockroach points out a chemical marker used to analyse Fear Toxin in the blood.

"He makes antidotes and vaccines against his Toxin. None of Scarecrow's goons have high ammount of fear toxin in their blood. It would not be this marker."

"Believe me, I want that damned clown gone as much as you do."

They settle into the couch further as they read the file.

"They sited the main cause of death as Joker's venom, but I can't imagine what the mix of Scarecrow's toxin and Joker's could do to someone when they're mixed. That could cause I whole different type of reaction that isn't even documented. This could be way worse than we think, I need more intel.."

"Hm, how about we don't go too deep into how I got the information? Boss lets us do our own thing and I have reason to believe he would be very happy if this is dealt with as soon as possible."

Cockroach shifted and put the laptop aside after she was sure the Detective had seen what she had pointed out.

"I think the bats are stumped because the clown isn't at his usual haunt. And has left no clue where he would be. I could go and ask around where he is. I still have his calling card after all. But I need backup if I do that."

"Fair enough. I won't pry for details, but I can tell you the Red Hood seemed to stiffen up quite a bit when I mentioned Joker to him. I don't know for sure of course, but it almost seemed personal.."

They pause to consider the file they just read, but then look over at her after her last statement.

"His calling card? What, you just..have his number or something? You can just call him up?"

Gunshots are not exactly uncommon in a city like Gotham. But when it comes from the alley you happen to be passing, it definitely catches attention.

"Lower your weapon and-"

*BANG*

The voice cuts off with a gasp, and something that sounds like it's made of metal clatters to the ground, followed by the sound of fumbled footsteps, and a loud CLANG against a nearby dumpster.

“If I had a nickel,” Merrymaker sighs as they step into the alley. Their shadow stretches across the concrete and dirt ground.

Merry catches sight of a bedraggled looking man, his eyes wide with fear and guilt and simmering rage, as he stumbles towards the mouth of the alley, a gun in hand. They tilt their head, “Run along, then. You’ve made enough of a mess.”

The man slips past Merry and onto the neon-lit street. The tangy smell of blood draws their eyes back to the person slumped against a dumpster.

“As I was saying: if I had a nickel for every time I found someone bleeding out in an alley, I’d have quite a few.”

"W-who the hell are you??"

Their voice is strained, more in pain than anything. They're clutching at their stomach, blood soaking into their shirt. They reach for the taser at their belt with their other hand, but they seize up when it makes pain shoot through their body. Their gun is a few feet away on the ground, likely having slipped from their hand when they got hit.

They're not in an official uniform, they have an unmistakable police badge at their belt. Not an average uniform cop, but definitely an officer.

Their hand shakes as they aim their taser at the new arrival. They don't know if she's a threat yet, but they don't know her intentions either, and they can't take chances with the vulnerable position they're in. They force their voice steady.

"Who are you?? What do you want??"

Further entering the dark alley, Merry casually kicks aside the gun, putting themself between the detective and the weapon. Their wide-brimmed hat casts a halo of shadow around their head

“I could ask you the same thing,” Merry drawls, “What’s a cop doing in the cauldron? More currently, what are they planning to do with that taser?”

A few feet away from the detective now, Merry leans in. They bend at the waist and tilt their head in a few jerky, slumped motions. The red lenses of their mask glint in the dim lighting.

They chuckle, “Couldn’t outdraw a petty criminal, could you? I thought you pigs were taught to shoot first.”

Merry takes another step forward. Khoshek can see their long coat and carved wooden cane now. An old-fashioned doctor’s bag clutched in Merry’s limp hand.

"..it..wasn't even meant to be an arrest-"

They cut themself off by wincing. Even speaking aggravates the wound.

"I was-..only supposed to question a potential witness...wasn't even gonna arrest...I only introduced myself and they-"

Despite their efforts, their breath hitches with their slightest movement. Blood is dripping to the concrete from their side now, having dripped down their side and staining a dark red splotch on their shirt and jacket. They're bleeding fast.

At this, Merry lets out a muffled laugh, “Sorry, sorry. You thought cornering a potential witness to a crime in a dead-end alleyway was a good idea? In one of the seediest neighborhoods?”

Even before they became Igor or Merrymaker, Mariyah didn’t have a good relationship with cops. They never helped when it mattered the most. And when the police did get involved, it was always too little too late. Even the most good intentioned officers further ruined things. Merry grimaces under their mask, remembering leering stares and flippant huffs. The cops didn’t care then.

Red rivulets trickle to the ground. The sight of blood causes Merry to loom closer, cane tapping with each step. They inhale the thick iron smell coating the air. Sighing, they speak “Never-mind that. You’re naïve, it seems, and it’s gotten you hurt.”

"They weren't even a suspect-"

Another wince.

"..I was given a lead about an information broker that hangs out around here. I don't even think that was them, just some trigger happy maniac. And no, I can't just shoot someone for being sketchy unless they pull their gun first. Not legally. I know exactly what this part of town is like, and I know all of the potential risks. It comes with the job. But things happen sometimes. That also comes with the job."

The red stain on their shirt is only growing. It's starting to pool on the ground. Their breathing is getting more uneven. They still have their taser aimed at her. Their arm shakes with strain, but their aim stays true.

"I'll ask again. What do you want?? You gonna just stand there and mock me or you gonna actually help?"

Merry, close enough now that the detective can make out the outline of their eyes through their mask, frowns. Their eyes narrow, and their shoulders stiffen.

It is true that an information broker lurks around these alleys. Merry has used his services a few times themselves. The locals call him ‘Scotch’. He’s one of the few of the Cauldron’s underworld not associated with the many Irish gangs that control the area.

“Careful with your words, officer,” they spit, “I’m a trigger happy maniac.”

Merry slinks a step to the side, watching Khoshek like a crow watches a deer carcass. Cars pass by, their headlights briefly glinting off the lenses of Merry’s mask.

“I was going to help. After all, I’ve helped quite a few vigilantes in your position. But, officer,” They meet Khoshek’s gaze, “You haven’t given me a reason to assist. Tell me: why should I help you?”

Their eyes track her with the same intensity. They look like that question was the stupidest thing they've ever heard.

"Do you need a reason to help someone? What kind of person sees someone bleeding out and doesn't want to help? And I'm not a vigilante."

They haven't lowered their taser. It stays trained on her.

"If you need a reason to help an injured person, I don't know what to offer you. Help me, or don't. I can't make you do anything. But if you're not going to, at least leave so I can call in for medical."

Merry throws their head back and laughs. Their shoulders shake with amusement as they force out a tirade of cackling. They convulse and jerk with each exhale.

“You—” They say between raspy gasps, “Are funny.”

Calming themselves into a smothered giggle, they continue, “Cornered and bleeding, and you mouth off to your potential salvation? I was expecting a defiant response, something witty and spunky, but outright denial of my services?” Merry grins, “You are funny.”

“What I meant to ask, I think, is if you are the type of cop that’s running this city to the ground, or if you’re one of the few pure of heart left,” Merry sneers behind their mask, “I don’t help dirty cops. Not for free, at least.”

"Yeah right. 'Salvation'? You don't exactly seem willing. I can just call in for medical. I'm not gonna beg for help from someone who could be a random crook for all I know."

Their expression darkens into a scowl.

"And don't you ever accuse me of being corrupt. I'm not that kind of scum to just-"

They cut off again to choke back a pained sound, taser almost slipping from their shaky hand as they clutch tighter at the gunshot. Blood seeps between their fingers despite trying to put pressure on it. They're declining rather quickly.

Merry closes the distance in an instant. They angle the taser away from themself. They don’t have to fight hard against Khoshek’s weakening arm.

“You’ll die before your medical gets here. I can help. Swallow your pride, officer. I’m no random crook. I’m a doctor,” Merry drawls, holding up their bag, “As much as I’d appreciate some good-old-fashioned groveling, I can do without it. You intrigue me. I’ll help, free of charge.”

They move to pry the taser away.

Their arm is pushed aside more easily than they'd like, and far more easily than it normally would. It beyond aggravating, but they also know there's not much to do. Even that movement sends aching through their body. But their expression doesn't waver.

"I don't know who the hell you are. I just got shot and you walk up acting all cocky like I'm supposed to know you. Why the hell would I trust you??"

They mumble the next part under their breath.

"...what kind of person needs a reason to help someone..."

Another pause.

"...I won't turn down help, if you're actually willing to.."

When she tries to take the taser, they aim it back at her, finger on the trigger. But it only lasts a few seconds with how much their hand shakes.

They scoff, “Drop the taser. You couldn’t fire it if you tried. I won’t hurt you, now that you’re my patient.”

Then, Merry kneels, their bag falling open into rows of gleaming tools. They reach into a pocket and produce a pair of blue latex gloves.

“You said you were looking for an information broker,” They hum as they slip the gloves over their black ones, “Which one?”

Cockraoch huffs in amusement when seeing Cecil copy the movements of Khoshek. It was endearing and made her smile. An honest smile, almost vulnerable.

"Hehe, yeah he's still pretty lovey. Cats can sense injuries. Actually, their purring can stimulate deep tissue healing. He's been laying on my tummy at night and purring like crazy. I think he knows."

They pause their movements to drink some water from the bottle they have nearby.

"You want help with the crows? I befriended a whole murder of them when I was a kid. You just gotta feed them the right stuff and be patient. Any nuts or seeds as long as they're unsalted, hard boiled or even raw eggs, unless you have chickens because then they'll start eating your chickens' eggs. Not that we have room for chickens anyway..nothing with garlic or any spices..actually, I'm willing to bet that if we went up to the community garden on the roof we could dig through some of the soil and find some grubs. They like those a lot, and grubs kill the plants anyway."

Cockroach puts all the containers away and then settles leaning on the doorframe. The place was not big enough to have her try to get to the little curtain corner where she slept. Not while the detective was doing their physical therapy.

"Funny thing about the crows. They only start harassing me when they see me from below. I never found out what exactly they don't like about me, but a friend explained it could be association from a feature I have. So not my fault, but nothing you can explain to them."

She hums in thought and takes out the new laptop she got. She had tinkered on it and was starting to set it up fully for her needs. She was pretty beat. She had spent most of the night awake and working and thus sufficiently tired, but it was a comfortable tired of work done and the promise of safe rest in the near future instead of the exhaustion of interrupted, restless sleep and haunting nightmares. Cockroach would even say it was the best rest she had ever had. She tilted her head before asking one of the few safe questions regarding their work.

"How is your recovery anyway? Are you allowed back into the office and field?"

They stand up carefully and push the coffee table back to where it usually is, careful not to bump Cecil.

"Recovery's going pretty well actually. The wound's fully healed, and I'm regaining strength fast, but just as protocol they don't want me coming back to work until I get my old strength back. It should only be another two weeks or so as long as I keep up with my recovery training."

Once the coffee table is back in its normal spot, they step aside so she can get to her makeshift room.

"From below..? Crows shouldn't have an issue with just anyone unless there's something really out of the ordinary or something they see as a threat...are you comfortable telling me what it is?"

They don't seem offended or accusing, just curious. They don't usually ask about her work, but it seems like it could be relevant to the case.

The detective is making their rounds around a few blocks in the area. They're gotten multiple reports of some odd sightings of 'a really big bug' in the general area. They're not sure if they believe it based off only a few reports, but they've also seen a lot weirder things than a really big bug in Gotham...

They end up a bit lost in their own thoughts along their patrol, idly looking down every alley and scaring off creeps harassing women for a long while before they look down the next alley and they stop abruptly.

They'd been sent to investigate the reports of giant bugs in the area, but none of the reports mentioned someone walking them on a leash like any other pet.

"Hey, uh..that's a rather..interesting pet you got there.."

"Right, uh, Detective Khoshek, GCPD. You're not in trouble, don't worry, it's just that we've got a lot of calls about uh..well. A 'really big bug'? They didn't give a lot of details, but a lot of people seemed to be worried about it so they sent me to check it out and make sure everything's fine.."

They glance down at the creature again. It looks rather fat. It really doesn't seem motivated either.

"...this guy doesn't exactly seem very destructive though..is he like your pet or something?"

As for Gordon… yep, I know him well enough to say he’ll listen. I can’t promise what he’ll do after that, but he takes corruption seriously, especially when it starts getting in the way of people doing their jobs.
