“Never better sir,” George murmured his answer, voice laced with sarcasm. Pulling his hand away, he opened his eyes and noticed a small smear of blood on the palm of his hand where the gun had cut in a little bit. Cursing under his breath, he glanced towards the Detective, and brought his hands up where the men could see them. He almost wanted to laugh at Murdoch’s cheeky words of comfort (despite the situation), “No, it appears I did not.” Though now he wished he had gotten the directions wrong after all. Watching the man shove Murdoch stirred anger inside him, and if there weren’t guns pointed at them he’d step in to intervene, but instead all he could do was keep moving forward. It wasn’t easy navigating through the forest terrain, with his head throbbing he had to stop every little while to keep himself from stumbling and falling to the ground. After the silence that had fallen, George finally had had enough and decided to speak up, despite the risk. “You were the anonymous caller, weren’t you?” he asked, flinching as the gun pressed deeper against him. “You called the station, claiming to have found a body in these woods, only there is no body…” “That’s right, I did. You’re smart… for a constable.” He spat the word with distaste and anger, and then glanced towards his partner. “Can we just kill this one? He’s not as important as that Detective you got over there. No one would miss a lowly copper like this, they’re easily replaceable and I’ve been itching to do some killin’ since we escap - ” “Stop talking over there! Once we get to the cave and tie ‘em up we’ll see about it, for now we need him alive, we need both of them alive if we’re going to get any ransom.” It wasn’t much further along before they reached the opening. The man who had George gave his gun to the man who had Murdoch, than began to tie the constable up, hands behind his back, along with his feet. George tried not to let it show that he was already wriggling against the taut restraint on his wrists, his eyes darting from the captors to Murdoch then back to the man who’d threatened to kill him. The man approached him slowly, reaching down as if to strangle him, and the constable reacted with a shout, scrunching up in fear of being choked, but was only met with laughter and the sound of his helmet falling to the cave floor with a thunk. “Not yet Constable Crabtree…” Straightening up the man backed away and then reached out for the guns, “Tie up the Detective, I’ll cover you. Then I think we should get a fire started along with dinner, don’t you agree?”

With a careful eye on his path, and a careful eye on George (William did not like how George was walking, and how he kept having to stop.) he walked quietly, as he was led, but he was listening very carefully. At the mention of killing George, William was pretty sure he was going to do something (push George out of the way? go for the gun? whatever possible path that would end with no one getting killed?) but, thankfully, the other thug didn’t agree with it.

Wait.

Escaped? That man was going to say escaped. Escaped from where? He couldn’t help the frown that appeared in his face as the thought appeared, and he’d have to ask George if any news of any escapes from... anywhere had come to his attention. 

Need both of them alive? It was a small comfort to hear those words, as they implied that they were planning something else, even if the second of the two either didn’t care about the plan, or didn’t agree with it to go against his partner’s plan and want to kill one of them.

William eyed the cave warily. It was off the path, deep in the woods. It was unlikely that anyone would just stumble across it, so if the off chance - no. William, firmly told himself, he wasn’t going to think about that.

“Hey!” William shouted as the man went towards George, his eyes wide as - no - he took a step forwards, the only reason stopping was because the man shoved one of the guns into his back and the other stopped his intimidation tactic, and laughed. Williams fist clenched tighter, and was growing less and less happy with the entire situation (not that he was happy in the first place, but he was deciding very unhappy) as he was tied up, much in the same manor of George, and was pushed harshly to the ground, hitting with with a fair amount of force, and he grit his teeth at the ache of the shove.

He watched as the two men got ready to start a fire up (they weren’t going to do that in cave were they?) and he managed to sit himself up, next to George. He looked over at the Constable, he spoke in a quiet voice. “How is your head?” he asked, shifting to try and be slightly more comfortable, and as best as he could, feel the ground he was sitting on with his tied up hands. With any luck he could find a sharp rock, or glass, to use to cut the ropes.

“That man said ‘escaped.’” Murdoch said again, his voice even lower than before. “Have there been any prison escapes that you’ve heard of, involving any case of ours?” Of course, they might have escaped from somewhere else, but then why lay a trap for them? Murdoch didn’t recognise them, not that he’d had the chance to have a very good look at their faces, but the whole situation seemed... very strange. And as an added afterthought, as he failed to find something that could cut the rope, “I don’t suppose you would have a knife on you?”

“Sir, whatever are you…?” Tilting his head he peered down at the twigs, wondering if the Detective was going to stop and start a fire, but when he saw it made an arrow shape he knew what he was doing. “Good thinking sir, putting a marker down.” Glancing up and over his shoulder, he scanned the area around them, searching for any sign of shelter they could use. “Do you suppose we’ll not make it back to the city in time? I - ” “I think you fellas should put your hands where we can see ‘em.” A voice from behind them said, and the sound of two guns cocking could be heard. George’s eyes widened fearfully, gaze darting to the Detectives as he felt pressure on the back of his neck from the end of a pistol, and a rough hand pushing him forward. “I – I don’t think you want to be doing this, taking two law men hostage,” he retorted, voice unsteady as he began to trudge forward. “The station will send men out to look for us, and – and - ” The handle of the gun came down on the side of his head with a crack, and George’s eyes became blinded by stars as he stumbled losing balance from the hit. Pain burned from the blow, his hand coming up to press against the spot where he’d been struck, warmth spreading between his fingers. Thank god he’d been wearing his helmet, otherwise this goose egg mighta been a hell of a lot worse.. “Shut it constable! Or next time it’ll be a bullet to the brain stem! Now move! The both of ya!” There was another man standing behind Murdoch who’d spoken up this time, and he was reaching out to push the Detective forward. “Not much further along we’ll find a cave, where you two gents will spend the night with us, and we’ll deal with you in the morning.”

“Yes, that way if we get turned about, we’ll know if we came this way.” A trick he had learned many years ago, and, although he hadn’t had the need for it in just as long, it had served quite well. Hopefully they wouldn’t need it, but it always served to be prepared. As he listened and prepared to reply to George’s question - he paused at voice, and the gun and the pressure on the back of his neck, and the spike of fear.

Slowly, he lifted his hands out so the armed men (two guns, two men? he hadn’t turned to look) could see them. Through they clenched in anger as one of the thugs hit George, and shoved him forwards, nearly making him stumble, if he hadn’t managed to catch himself in time. “Are you alright, George?” William asked, his voice quiet - not so their current captors couldn’t hear (that’s be a doomed effort) but as maybe just to placate them. “It appears you didn’t get the directions wrong.”

“Hey, you shut it too!” the man with the gun at Williams back snapped, pushing the Detective again.

It appeared they had fallen into a trap. The men must have been lying in wait for them. William and George hadn’t exactly been quiet, so it wasn’t as if they had accidentally sneaked up on them. And they already knew where a cave was for shelter, so how much of this was planned?

This certainly wasn’t an ideal situation. Far from it, if he were being honest, and as... frustrated by the situation as he was, he wasn’t going to cast blame. The Detective glanced behind them, the way that they had come and then up at the darkening skies. “Only until that stump.” he decided, and bent down to pick up three twigs laying on the ground and put them together to make a rough pyramid marker. “We shouldn’t try navigating the woods when it gets darker. If you see anything that would make a good shelter, let me know.”

“Well, maybe sir, but what if Toronto’s built over an ancient undiscovered civilization, and this killing – murder – is just the start of their revenge.” Whoever they were he hadn’t given much thought to, but the detective had certainly opened the door again to George’s imagination. “Mm. I’d wondered that too, someone who’s started thinking… outside of normal means.” But really, what was normal when it came to murdering someone? Nothing about a murder should ever be considered that. He nodded, and glanced over his shoulder at the men dispersing from the scene, “Yes, we’ve got constables who’ve been out talking to regulars and folks who live close by. I should probably go and join them then, sir…” He didn’t really want to, and he hoped his lingering would give the detective reason to come up with something to have him stay.

It was no wonder George enjoyed writing his novel and other stories. Coming up with strange and unrealistic stories seemed to come naturally to the constable, no matter how unlikely or scientifically impossible they may be. Murdoch took in a breath as he started to explain why, exactly, there wouldn't be a hidden civilization under Toronto - when, unfortunately (for William, fortunately for George who wouldn't have to listen to Williams explanation about vibrations and other things to disprove his theory) he was interrupted by another constable - one of the ones George had just mentioned, as it turned out. The constable was holding, by its edge and with a rag, a bloodied dagger. William took it, and looked at it. The hilt was very decorative, and the blade seemed to be shaped more like a decorative blade than a normal knife. Even so, someone had used it for stabbing something.  They'd need to check the blood before saying it was the murder weapon, but the signs pointed in that direction. “What do you think, George?”
