ok lotf rant/essay in defense of roger ('s humanity)
roger killing piggy was self defense
this is not me saying he doesn't deserve blame, or that it was valid, or that it makes him a good person for doing so, but it was self defense.
roger panicked because piggy was trying to explain, to reason, and he lashed out and pushed the boulder. he wasn't thinking like a person when it happened. he was thinking like the mob that was the tribe. he probably didn't think he would kill him. how would he know? he'd never done something like that before.
why do i bring this up even though I love piggy as a character and find him the objectively better person?
because i don't think a lot of people realize that roger is still human
he's done horrible things but he's also a child
piggy did not deserve death, he should have been listened to and treated with respect. piggy was belittled and abused and the tragedy of him could have been prevented if was treated as a person.
roger does deserve punishment for killing another human being, but he can't be punished for not knowing. if he wasn't thinking, how could he have known that piggy would die?
additionally, as a black boy in the 50's, you can imagine how poorly he was treated. and in most cases, bullies have also been the victim at some point, and piggy was the perfect target to keep roger his personhood. he didn't need to be the outsider, all he had to do was point out someone else.
if roger was a completely evil person, he would have seen piggy's point, known what would happen if he pushed the boulder, and done it anyway
but he didn’t
taking away his humanity to criticize him says nothing about the fact that he was 12
middle school boys hit each other all the time without thinking about how much it must hurt, and if you wouldn't blame someone for that, then why strip roger of his humanity just to make it sound like it's okay to want to kill him or beat him up?
not to mention how roger is significantly more shaken by piggy’s death than jack is, and yet people talk of killing him like it would somehow undo the entire plot
in conclusion, roger is human, i put this essay in my drafts when this was an issue in my friend group, i think roger and piggy make better parallels than roger and simon, and that @ruthlessrogeroverhere is an amazing rp account ❤️❤️❤️

I have a theory/headcanon that Jack and Roger were very good friends before the events on the island. Although it is common to assume that the choir members already knew each other, I believe their connection was more of a friendship than choirmates.
In the novel, Roger is described as a quiet and reserved boy by the narrator, but there are also small hints of cruelty in his behavior. Some of the other children even mention negative things about him, suggesting that his darker side was already known before he arrived on the island. This could indicate that Roger was suffering from some kind of psychological disorder or unresolved emotional problem, and that made him behave in a distant or violent manner, and that the adults around him never knew how to deal with it appropriately.
Considering that the children were part of a church choir, it is possible that the adults in Roger's life (priests, teachers, or other authority figures) responded to his behavior with punishments, humiliation, or attempts to “correct” him through faith, rather than offering him real psychological help. If so, Roger probably learned to repress his personality, becoming silent and contained, but at the same time accumulating resentment and confusion.
Jack, being a member of the choir himself, may have known Roger's past and understood his temperament better than anyone. This would explain why Roger decided to follow him so loyally on the island. When the group splits up and Jack forms his own tribe, Roger's cruelty becomes more apparent, not necessarily because the island has changed him, but because Jack's leadership gave him permission to act on the impulses he had to suppress for so long.
Roger could have been a leader in his own right; his capacity for violence and intimidation could have secured his power. However, he remains by Jack's side, perhaps out of loyalty or a kind of mutual understanding (Roger was one of the first children to join his tribe). Jack, being manipulative and ambitious, surely recognized Roger's potential and deliberately encouraged his more violent instincts to strengthen his own dominance over others. Their relationship becomes symbiotic: Roger gains the freedom to reveal himself without restrictions, and Jack gains a ruthless partner who amplifies his authority.
In short, Jack decided to take advantage of him to strengthen his own power on the island. Instead of worrying about how his actions might psychologically affect Roger, he placed him in positions that fostered his cruelty, encouraging destructive behaviors that benefited Jack. Their relationship was not just one of friendship or loyalty: Jack manipulated Roger, exploiting his vulnerability and violent potential, without offering him any real support or understanding.
