I’ve been in the Professor Layton fandom for long enough that I feel like I can divide it into eras at this point I definitely believe that the fandom is going through a very silent renaissance. Due to New World of Steam, the fandom has seen a very steady traction of new members that has been aiding in a slow but exponential rise in growth.

I think it’s a very fun thing being a fandom historian of sorts and kinda looking at how the fandom has evolved and what that evolution has made the fandom today.

You know what, it’s 2026, it’s time we have this conversation Professor Layton fandom:

Layton’s Mystery Journey is way too over hated.

Whoa, whoa, put down your pitchforks, let me explain. I won’t lie, LMJ has its fair share of major flaws; its storytelling and puzzle design suffer quite a bit. However, we can’t deny that things like the LMJ anime are actually very solid pieces of Professor Layton media that deserve far more attention than they receive. Even though I often find myself disinterested in LMJ and what it adds to the Professor Layton series, I can still find aspects of it to enjoy.

I believe a huge reason the fandom has doomed LMJ to an eternal pit is simply because we’ve been told to. Much of the hate comes from people who haven’t really experienced LMJ for what it has to offer and only have heard about how “bad” it is. I’m not saying you have to play LMJ, but at least consider watching some of the anime. I think it’s time we start realizing that even though LMJ has its fundamental flaws, it’s still a very decent game, and so is the media that surrounds it.

As someone who’s been in fandom for over a decade, here is ONE rule you MUST follow. At ALL cost avoid hierarchy.

Establishing a hierarchy of any type is a a slippery slope that I’ve and so many others have fallen into. Never give anyone within a fandom position of power or authority over you and other people. It is absolute hell on earth within a fandom when it feels like your fandom is controlled by a single person and their cronies.

It’s lowkey kind of crazy once you realize a fandom you used to be part of, or are still semi part of, is no longer active and is just dying off. It sucks that so many people don’t get to experience a fandom at its peak or actually interact with the community.
