So, you all knows how much I love D.Gray-Man (forever and ever and ever) but when you get at the point where you pretty much watched and rewatched the entire series - original & hallow and all - as well as read and re-read the manga youâre gonna need a breather to process all the emotions but yet still canât seem to let go. Yet at the same time, ya need a breather with something familiar yet something new. Yule gotchu, fam ()ïœIâve compiled a few recommendations that might match your tastes.Â
The few below would probably have elements from DGM that you might like and find intriguing and probably fill up the time until Hoshino reveal more to us.Â
Here we go!
GLOSSARYÂ
01. Claymore
02. 07 GhostÂ
03. Pandora Hearts
â 1Â â CLAYMOREÂ
RECOMMEND : Both Anime & Manga â â â â â Â
This is an oldie but a real goodie. I think it was way back when I was in middle school when I first watched Claymore but recently I rewatched it and itâs still very good. The action scenes were top notch and each battle is very interesting to watch especially when they really go at it.Â
The story takes place in medieval-esque time in a world thatâs overrun by demons known as Youma who can disguise themselves wearing human skin. Theyâre difficult to get rid of and when a town found themselves infested, they have no choice but to contact and Organization in order to dispatch a Claymore warrior in order to deal with the monster. In this story, we follow a Claymore named Claire, one of the Silver-Eyed Witches as she is accompanied by her human companion Raki.Â
The Organization is definitely the Orderâs equivalent, Youmaâs as Akumas and Claymore/Silver-Eyed Witches as Exorcists.Â
Those who love D.Gray-Man would definitely find something to like in Claymore as they hit similar themes although Claymore is definitely a bit more darker and gory in nature so beware of that (A bit of warning on assault too. I think two scenes but it didnât get far.) Thereâs definitely body horror and blood and guts but itâs mostly keep out of eyesight in the anime but the same canât be said for the manga.Â
The story is really intriguing and really led you to wanting to know more and wanting to know how it ends. The soundtrack is also absolutely fitting and gets you hype up with the scenes. Thereâs 26 episodes for the anime and the manga is complete with 156 chapters (give or take) Though I havenât finished the manga yet so no spoiling me (;ÂŽĐŽïœ) Not that I donât know the ending...what?! Sometimes I canât help myself!Â
I have so many things I want to rave about this anime but Iâm gonna keep my lips shut and let you experience it by yourselves. (ă»Ï<)
Not enough? Let these few gifs convince you!Â
â 2 â 07 GHOSTÂ
RECOMMEND : Both Anime & Manga â â â â
Same with the above, I was probably in middle school when I first stumbled on this anime. After completing Claymore for the second time, I instantly remembered and rewatched it. This focuses more on emotional point similar to D.Gray-Man where characters have their own arcs and lessons to go through.Â
07 Ghost takes place in a fantasy realm with cultural influence from Germany, magic in forms of Zaiphon and even have Sky Pirates! Yes Sky Pirates! The story however follows Teito Klein, a battle skalve (slave) for the Empire but one day he starts to remember his past and flees from the Empire falling into the church grounds where the 7 Ghost are worshipped. And soon he have to deal with Kors and Wars who temps humans to grant their wishes before taking their souls and run into the 7 Ghosts as he tries to uncover his hidden memories of the past.Â
I think out of the three recommendation, 07 Ghost hits most of the same notes as D.Gray-Man though I do prefer DGM in terms of story telling and everything but 07 Ghost is an interesting emotional journey of its own. In this series, the Church mirrors the Order though DGM order is much darker in terms of ambitions, Wars and Kors mirroring Akumas and the Clerics and 7 Ghosts can stand in the place of the exorcists. Allen and Teito have similar notes as well but I wonât say much more because itâd be spoilers but a clue would be in terms of identity, theyâre not all they seem. Lastly, 07 Ghost have a beautiful melody called Raggs Requiem that would be Lacrimosa Lalaâs song equivalent.Â
The anime guarantees a good time having hit the same comedic and emotional points and for all those shonen-ai shippers, this is the series for you (o'ïœâŠo) though I have yet to see if the couples end up together (Iâm still reading the manga. Gomennasai m(ïŒâïŒ)m ) so no guarantees on that. For the first time viewers, youâre gonna need tissues for the anime. Itâs not a long anime with 25 episodes that focuses on the church before Teito leaves for the journey but itâs a worthwhile experience.Â
As for the manga...I was a bit disappointed by a couple of scenes as it moves at a fast pace and didnât have as much of an emotional impact on the readers as covered by the anime but the story is fascinating and the characters have many layers and the deeper you go, the more you see their motivations arenât surface level. The manga isnât long spanning exactly 100 chapters (if you count the extra) and thereâs enough mystery and emotional backstory as well as action to go around. Iâm actually disappointed that they didnât continue the anime as the story after Teito left the Church was very interesting especially when it comes to the identity of Teito Klein as well as the true identities and past of the 07 Ghost : (1) Zehel, (2) Fest, (3) Profe, (4) Relikt, (5) Vetrag, (6) Ea and (6) Lankarte as follows -Â
Not to mention we have a younger less cynical perverted version of Cross, a less eccentric but still highly eccentric Komuii-like character as well as a cute mascot, Burupya! How could you say no to such a cute face?
â 3 â PANDORA HEARTSÂ
RECOMMEND : Both Anime & Manga â â â â â
OKAY, YOU KNOW WHERE IâM GOING WITH THIS. THOSE THAT KNOW WILL KNOW AND I KNOW THAT MOST OF YOU KNOW! This...This is probably the only anime and manga that can compete against DGM emotionally and story-plotting wise. They both will eff-ed you up emotionally, bawling into tissues as well as leave you screaming at books and screens at what will happen next.Â
Oh gosh, I hope I do it justice.Â
Pandora Hearts takes place in a fictional England in Victorian Era times in the age of noble houses and Dukedoms. On the very day that a boy Oz Vessalius is about to have his Coming to Age ceremony, he fell down and discovers a pocket watch upon a that plays a mysterious melody. Strange things happens and he was thrown into the world of Abyss - a twist on Lewis Carollâs Wonderland filled of broken things, the Will of the Abyss and beings called Chains. There he meets a Chain and form a contract with her bringing him back to his own world but an Organisation have tracked him down and now he have to cooperate with them as he unravels the mystery about himself, the Chains, the Abyss and the dark secret that loomed behind the noble houses that affects their pasts, present and future.Â
Thereâs so much I want to say and yet canât say about this series because the amount of spoilers. It would be something that haunt you for a long time and once you get invested, you canât quite get out.Â
Thereâs similarities between characters such as Oz with Allen and I dare say Komuii and Sheril with Xerxes but both series have a strong character cast that you would fall in love with each of them and layered story where nothing is as it seems including characters. The Chains can stand as either Innocence or Akumas in a sense but it isnât a typical monster hunting story, itâs rather focused on unravelling the mystery one string at a time. There are heavy elements on horror and a bit of warning of blood and a bit of bodily harm so take note of that.
The anime is 25 episodes long and serves as a good enough introductory to the series but the manga is where the story truly shines. The soundtrack however is wicked epic and worth listening to. Yuki Kajiura lends her talents creating haunting melodies that would haunt your mind and tug at your hear strings. The manga spans around 104 chapters and good news! Itâs completed so no need to sit in agony for so long (gawd knows I have. I had to wait for years. I still have to finish up the manga thoughá( ͥ° ÍÊ ÍĄÂ°)á Yes, yes, I am a bit slow when it comes to mangas) But I think most of you are pretty acquainted with this. How I know? Well....when this happens.Â
One last thing I need to mention - the art for Pandora Hearts is extremely beautiful and you will find yourself staring at a single page for more than a few seconds just to take in all the details. Thatâs it.Â
CONCLUSIONS
Thatâs pretty much what Iâve been able to gather over the last couple of months. I hope the recommendations are helpful in some way. Even if itâs not, itâs fun to write about for a bit. I definitely know thereâs more series to recommend and would love to hear if there are suggestions. Iâve heard about Demon Slayer being one of them but havenât started on it yet. Anyways....
Weâve all been there. The muses hit us hard, and we spend days, weeks if weâre lucky, churning out thousands of words a day. Our stories are on fire, itâs all we can think about, and if weâre not writing, something feels wrong.Â
And then it ends, as inspiration always does.Â
This is normal! Inspiration isnât a personality trait, itâs a temporary state of being. When that fire burns out, weâre usually left feeling tired and uncreative. So how do we recover?Â
Why are you slowing down?Â
First things first, figure out the why. Take a good, hard look not just at your writing, but your life around it. Maybe you donât know what happens next in the story, and youâre stuck. Maybe youâve been working a lot of hours and staying up late writing, and youâre physically exhausted. Maybe something emotional happened in your life, like a breakup, or a fight with a friend or loved one. Sometimes it might just be the natural cycle of the muses, but before you chalk it up to that, really look at all the other options.Â
Some of those causes, like writers block, can be solved by going back to outlines or using brainstorming techniques. Others, like a fight, can only be solved by time. Which brings us to our next questionâŠ.
Do you need a break?Â
I always say, if itâs a problem inside your story, you can write around it, write through it, or write about it, but you canât solve it by not writing. If itâs a problem outside of your story? Then you need to take a honest look at whatâs going on in your life to see if you can benefit from a break.
Not everyone needs one in the post-inspiration burnout phase, but plenty do. Let it be an option! Take some time to explore another hobby, another writing project, or to just lay on the couch and watch netflix. Whatever you know is going to help you recover those creative juices.
It helps to choose a start and end date to your break, whether thatâs a day or a week or a month, so you can mindfully take time off from your project.Â
Can you recreate your inspiration?Â
While youâre reflecting on the reasons you slowed down, and if you should take a break or not, thereâs one more thing you should try to figure out: was there something that prompted your inspiration, and if so, can it be recreated? Maybe you moved to a new writing place, and it awakened something. Great! Find another new spot, and see if that helps. Maybe it was a song you listened to over and over and over again until you wrung out all the inspirational juices from it. If itâs on spotify, go to that songâs radio to find other similar jams, or listen to other songs by that artist.Â
Thereâs not always a rhyme or reason to inspiration, but if you can find a source, take advantage of that!Â
Reread for fun
If you find yourself slowing down, give yourself a nice time by rereading all the fevered words you just furiously typed on the page. Itâs a good way to spot check yourself to make sure you didnât just throw out half your outline in a muse-induced haze, and it can bring back some of the excitement you felt when you were writing it. Besides, thereâs something about reading words that were written joyously that is just so much fun. Let yourself have a moment.Â
Donât hold yourself to the same standard
Were you writing for five hours a night? Were you writing 6k words a day? Thatâs great, but thatâs done now. Donât expect yourself to be able to sprint forever. Writing is a marathon sport, and there is no shame in physically and mentally slowing it down. If you work well off goals, thatâs great, but choose a more realistic word count or time goal for your lifestyle, something that you could conceivably achieve every day, not just when inspiration lights a fire under your ass.Â
Be proud of what you achieved
Whether your inspiration lasted a day, a week, or months, itâs not something to mourn the loss of; itâs something to celebrate the existence of. Whatever you achieved during this time, be proud of it! Chances are, you wrote words you never would have gotten down without these moments, and had ideas that are going to serve you for much longer than any temporary period of inspiration could ever last. Throw a party!Â
Remember, no writer writes off of inspiration alone. It takes work, discipline, and some well timed breaks to be a consistent and healthy writer. I hope you enjoy your periods of inspiration, and smile during your periods of work.Â
"Qin!" Alma glomped onto me, his tears seeping into my shirt "Yu is being mean again!" Sighing, I patted him, aware that a mini-Kanda glaring holes into my back. The air grew bitter, cold biting and trepidation skittering up her spine. The stench that was once a mere whiff was now stronger. She took another step forward, something disturbing crunched under her feet. She squints under the moonlight spotting broken glass and shattered metal. âThis donât look good.â Her gaze wandered across the pile of rubble to the signs of tattered tanned like material scattered about. She had seen these before; They belonged to the FindersâŠexcept there were no finders, only their remains.  Â
It was time for her to get out of there. Backing away, the ground beneath her feet echoes hollow and rumbles. She gasps as everything happens in a flash. The ground cracked and she found herself falling. Claws pulled free from her shoulders and she scrambles to get a hold of anything but there was nothing but crumbling bricks slipping form her fingers.  Â
As she fall, many sounds echoed against her ears. There were voices below and cackles that reverberated deep in the walls and inside her chest. She had heard those voices before, heart hammering at the sounds of battle happening beneath.  Â
âKanda!â A voice cried out.  Â
âWhat the-âÂ
A shriek filled the air and the two boys stared shell shocked and dumbfounded as the girl appeared out of nowhere headed straight for the ground. The cloaked stranger slammed disgracefully to the ground. The fall knocked the air out her but she quickly moved, away from the rubble heading right at her and she could already imagined herself being crushed. She hissed, rolling over uneven pieces that dug into her back and she could imagine having bruises for days.  Â
âOw, ow, owâŠfor heavenâs sake.â She breathlessly wheezed out, pushing herself into an upright sitting position. The bird glided down landing on top of the pile of rubble that wouldâve crushed her and stared, unimpressed. She groaned not appreciating the sentiment, âYou try landing on your feet from something that came out of nowhere like that.â It still gave her the judging look.  Â
Gushing sand filled her ears. It was growing nearer and nearer. She tensed, hands reaching to the insides of her cloak as a shadow rose over her. She glanced up and found herself staring at the horrifying face of a grotesque creature made entirely of gushing sand. It pulled a grin like a demented jester staring down at her with the face of death. She sighed, âGreat.â  Â
âAnother human? How fun, die!â The akuma rushed towards her.  Â
âLady!â Allen called out, reaching out to her but it was too late, the sand slipping past the claws of his Innocence.Â
"Qin!," Alma glomped onto me, his tears seeping into my shirt "Yu is being mean again!" Sighing, I patted him, aware that a mini-Kanda glaring holes into my back. 26th Night : Everything Will Be Alright
Komuii centric chapterÂ
He stood in front of a door that would lead to the room where she was kept. And for the first time, he was nervous.Â
His palms seemed to sweat but he pushed himself forward, twisting the door handle. The door creaked as he entered the room. It was dark and barely lit save for a hanging lamp and a candle by her bedside. As he drew closer, his eyes adjust to the dark making out her figure on the bed, hands bandaged and bound, vacant tear soaked eyes staring into the distance. She had tensed when he came in, bindings pulled taut. But it loosened immediately, as if defeated, no hope in escape. What had they done to her? The state of Lenalee nearly drew him to tears. But he wouldnât cry, not now. She needed him more than anything. Tightening his fingers, he crossed the room, careful calculated steps even though all he wanted to was run to her and bring her into his arms. but he couldnât, unsure the measure of her response in such a state. Silently, he sat down by the side of the bed.  Â
âLenalee,â He started, âIâm here.âÂ
Her eyes moved, glancing at him. It felt like she was looking past him, as if she didnât believe in him, that he was a dream and wasnât real. He reached out slowly and gently as if he was afraid that he would hurt her and held her hand. at the touch, her eyes widened a fraction before fresh tears sprung.
âBrother?â  Â
âYes, Iâm here.â And Iâm never leaving your side again.
She took one look in the mirror and screamed. The face reflected was the sight of nightmares. Of all the crazy ass characters she could've been reborn as, it has to be this slimy ass seaweed head with a nasty attitude and personality? An anthology of stories where OCs found themselves reborn/awakened as different characters in DGM. 1st up: The Chronicles of Shriek-ril! Oc-insert
She took one look into her reflection and screamed, fear becoming horror, horror becoming disbelief and finally devolved into bawls like a newly born child. She sniffed, taking another peek and started crying again. She was hideous.Â
Of all the people that she couldâve been reborn as, it has to be this slimy ass seaweed head with a nasty attitude and nasty personality? Why couldnât it be someone pretty like Cross or Klaud. Heck, she would even rather be Tiedoll! She catches her reflection or rather his reflection and rebellion flashed in her eyes.  Â
âI refuse!â She threw the sheet over the mirror and pushing the potted cactus off the table with extra dose of pettiness. If thatâs Sheril favourite potted plant, he can go and suck it.Â
But even that small moment of rebellion didnât last long as eyes flooded with tears again. She sank to the ground in despair. She has the right to cry, thereâs no shame in cryingâŠshe tries to tell herself. Anyone would despair waking up as Shriek-ril Kamelot of all people. But sheâs now him and he was an enigma. She didnât even know where to start with him; A egomaniac with a playhouse problem and that was all that she knew about him. Oh how would I survive?  Â
âSheril dear, are you alright?â She turned and through the film of tears made out the figure of a woman standing at the door. Not-Sheril wiped her tears, eyes widening as the woman entered with almost glowing light like an angel descending from heaven. She looked around, even her countenance was gentle and beautiful âOh my, what a mess. Iâll get someone to clean it up.âÂ
She was about to leave when she caught the strangely vulnerable expression on her husbandâs face. She approached, soft tiny steps that barely echoed off the floorboards, reaching out with concern, âIs everything alright?  Â
Not-Sheril threw her arms around the woman, sobbing into her shoulder. âWhatâs the matter with you today?â Her gentle voice led to her having to sob more hysterically. Tricia wrapped her arms gently around her and drew circles on his back, âThere, there.â Not-Sheril continues sobbing.  Â

trying and failing something is actually one of the best things that can happen to you. itâs nothing to feel bad about, itâs an essential part of growing. focus on doing your best, donât worry about avoiding failure and you will learn and become better, no matter what the outcome is.
"Qin!," Alma glomped onto me, his tears seeping into my shirt "Yu is being mean again!" Sighing, I patted him, aware that a mini-Kanda glaring holes into my back. Alma glancing towards the skyline, spying as the sun grew lower and lower and yet Qin still wasn't back. He shook his head, shouldn't worry. He picked up Fluffy. The duck was strangely silent, the sensation of running his hands through its feathers brought little comfort to him. Dark clouds creeping forward, tempering the orange evening glow. The more he glanced, the more he paced and his heart feels unsettled.
"What's taking her so long? She should be back by now," He wrung his hands, eyes glancing towards the forest, hoping to catch a wisp of blonde only for Yu to appear, ignoring him and heading into the house.
Alma bit his lip. Maybe she was running late. Maybe she stopped to smell the flowers. Maybe she took a nap? And his thoughts started to spiral from there. What if she had gotten lost and can't find her way back because the birds ate her crumbs trail? What if a bear decides that she's honey and try to eat her?
Yu, he knows he would take care of himself. He was pretty sure that Kanda can take on a bear and win. Qin on the other hand...Alma stares at Fluffy quacking on the ground ground, she could barely fend off an attack from a duck.
His worries intensifies. Alma jumped as the door slammed shut and Yu raced forward looking downright pissed. Something was wrong. Truly, truly wrong. "Yu, Yu!" He rushed to catch up with him, "What's happening? Is it Qin?"
Yu refused to answer him. He stomped angrily into the forest, awakening wailing birds that took flight, afraid to cross his path. Alma called out to him but Yu stayed stubbornly silent. A sinking feeling drop down into the pit of his stomach as dread pressed onto his shoulders. It was something to do with Qin, he was sure. He's just afraid...He reached down, clasping his hand around the cool metal of the charm. Please be okay Qin.
Yu abruptly stopped, Alma slamming into him. Why he stop? Alma peers forward, the bushes rustling. Yu lowered his stance, unsheathing his blade aimed at the the bush, determined to cut down whatever that would come. Alma gripped onto Yu's shoulder, peering with anticipation.
"Qin!," Alma glomped onto me, his tears seeping into my shirt "Yu is being mean again!" Sighing, I patted him, aware that a mini-Kanda glaring holes into my back. I put on my most serious look and grabbed his shoulders firmly, âTo bring the animals back to the barn, I need you to do one thing, Alma.â  Â
âWhat?â He eyes widened with anticipation.  Â
I took a deep breath, âYou must yodel.â  Â
âYodel?â  Â
âYeah, yodel,â I stared steadily into his eyes, âWhen you yodel, the animals will be drawn to your voice and follow you wherever you go.â  Â
He stared back at me with so earnestly that it took everything for me not to break out into a grin. I whispered into his ears and he nodded, listening to every word that I said. Oh, this was going to be fun.

It was times like this that Edgar realised bitterly, that he had lived a life of regrets.  Â
All his life, he had never been strong enough to stand up to what he believes. It happened countless times, more than he could count by cycling through his fingers, the twisted pattern engraved itself in his life. He couldnât stop his uncle from starting the Second Exorcist Project, watching as regret took over his undaunted uncleâs eyes, burden carried in his every word that with certainty that even if he died, his sins never to be washed away. He couldnât stop Twi from from dipping her hands into the project, couldnât take the burden away from her shoulders and didnât have the stomach to do what she does. He was a coward. He could feel the pitying eyes of Rikki on his back each time he bit back his words, unable to protest, unable to stand up to Sahlins. Only sitting back and watching as his wife dug herself deeper into the same ditch his uncle had tread in. And now, he was sitting in the sidelines as they put Yu to sleep, watching as Almaâs entire world collapsed around him. Leaving him questioning once more, why he continued to live the way he lived.
âAlma,â He breathes out, the air chilling, âWhat have you done?âÂ
Nothing could dispel the look in Almaâs eyes, âYouâre the monsters.âÂ
"Qin!," Alma glomped onto me, his tears seeping into my shirt "Yu is being mean again!" Sighing, I patted him, aware that a mini-Kanda glaring holes into my back. At the back of his mind, Alma had always wondered. He had wondered why they had woken up from holes when everyone speaks about love, birth and parents, why his wounds no matter how severe healed in an instant while he saw that when other's hurt or cut, taking days before it fades into scars and bruises that seemed to linger even as his own skin was spotless. He had also wondered why when they look at them, their eyes seem to regarded them as something different and not equals.
At first, he had simply thought it was because they were children. But as he stared past the shattered glass, revealing secrets, he finally realised that that wasn't the case at all.
The truth was, they will never be equals.
He watched, eyes wide, unable to truly comprehend what was in front of him. Bodies of partially rotting flesh covered entirely in cloth filled with runes, scripts and spells, preserving what's left of it. It was the first time that he finally understood why everything in this place was constantly freezing, temperature dropping, warmth nary in sight. It was then that he realised the truth of his existence.
That he was nothing more than a fraud.
Nothing but a tool, a doll that shouldn't exist.
Shock and disbelief gripped onto him tightly, breath quaking as anger simmered from within, threatening to boil over as the puzzle pieces slowly came together, painting a painful, agonising picture as he stared at the mummified bodies.
