Though it put his mind to ease that Nahyuta didn’t bite the dust, it still made Dhurke’s sudden gift of life one huge question mark on the whole ordeal…
There it was. The question he was anticipating. Of course his actions would seem cruel or unusual to everyone but himself. His expression turned stern and unapologetic. “What would I have said, Nahyuta?” He placed his hand on his hips and flashed a fake smile, exaggerating his tone to be more chipper. “’Hey there, son! Guess what? Your old man finally kicked the bucket! Just here to run a few errands then I’m off to the Twilight Realm!’”
He shook his head. Drilling the idea into Apollo’s head that he wouldn’t be passing on soon was hard enough. That distraught look in his eyes would haunt him to the afterlife - or whatever life this was supposed to be. “…There were things I still needed to do. Things I couldn’t do if I was pronounced dead. I had to see the rebellion through, but more importantly…” His face softened. “I needed to see you and Apollo one last time. I wanted to see you again like nothing was wrong, but as the trial grew closer, I knew Amara’s life was in danger. I just couldn’t keep up the facade anymore. I know the way you and everyone in court had to find out was…cruel. I’m sure it wasn’t the easiest pill to swallow…”
Dhurke himself swallowed, getting choked up at the thought of disappointing everyone who believed in him with his untimely demise. He thought learning through the trial would be the best way, but certainly not the easiest. “Believe me, son. You and I becoming a family again…It’s all I’ve ever wanted. But I got too headstrong, and I paid the price. Please, forgive your idiot father…”
Nahyuta physically recoils a bit, hand darting to his collar before he realizes his rosary isn’t there. The words that he’s hearing all ring true, but that doesn’t mean he has to like them. In the face of an argument with that, he has no choice but to let it go like he always tells others to, but he doesn’t want to. He wants to demand why his father could never tell him the truth, or trust him to overthrow the system alongside the Dragons just as he trusted Apollo, but he knows the answer. That answer is his own fault: his choice to stand by the Ga’ran regime.
“I...” he begins to speak again, his head down and posture stiff to the point of discomfort. His usual impeccable restraint has been shattered, and he can’t stop himself from fiddling with his fingers as he considers the words rolling around in his mind. His thumb presses into the dragon on the palm of his opposite hand, still finding the feeling of the bare skin somewhat new. His words come out slowly and heavily, as if he’s admitting something shameful. “I... treated you in a way that a son should never treat his own father.” During Dhurke’s last trial, ignorance had truly been bliss. He remembers how he felt when he finally realized the truth, and that he had never spared his father a good word even after his death.
“Even if you didn’t tell me your plans... it is because I was the one who betrayed our ideals. For that... I wonder if I can still be called your son at all.” After all, what kind of son abandons his own father?
@dhatr
Dhurke, strangers, those who talked as if they knew her; it would be a lie to say that the young priestess wasn’t frightened. Her prayers did nothing to ease her worries, and she found herself on edge at all times, wondering if each face she passed would be the one to put a blade in her back to throw Khura'in into turmoil, wherever Khura'in was relative to this place.
A familiar light, lilac head catches her attention and she knows it must me Nahyuta, her br- her braid head. She startles, jumping to her feet, and she makes her way quickly to his side. “Nahyuta!”
She tries not to sound too relieved and carefully puts the smug, self-assured smile onto her face. “How surprising to see you here too, Braid Head.”
If Nahyuta were to hug her, she thinks, she would let him… but it isn’t as though she can hug him! Not now, not like this. That would hardly be fitting of a girl of her station, after all.
Since he arrived in the city, Nahyuta has been noticing a conspicuous absence of an obligation to duty. In a city where he knows so few people that the whole thing feels alien, he has no authority nor any ability to help. That isn’t to say he doesn’t want to: he just can’t. As a result, he’s been restless, constantly looking around him. Some faces resemble those back home; others he thinks he knows, but it turns out they’re just strangers who possess a certain demeanor similar to his acquaintances.
Once, he even thinks he catches sight of a pair of brown horns, but they’re gone in the crowd before he focuses in on them.
This time, however, it’s unmistakably someone he knows who addresses him. At the first sound of his name, he’s already turned, catching the familiar timbre of the princess’s voice. He watches her approach quickly, his cautious expression softening. He’s relieved beyond expression that she is still safe. In his absence, she has not been hurt. He hasn’t failed another one of his duties, both as regent and as a brother.
“Your Benevolence,” he says, a small smile evident in his tone of voice. After all these years of looking after her from the prosecutor’s bench, he can see through her tough veneer. “I’m glad to see you unharmed, even if the Holy Mother has decreed that it be in such a situation as this.” He drops his professionalism soon, though, leaning to meet Rayfa’s eyes. “Are you doing all right?”
He thinks of hugging her, too, as she’s so small and defenseless and he wants to act as her protector, maybe for the first time in his life. But instead, he merely reaches out a hand and sets it on her shoulder gently.
this is the actual right time to post this: real monk hours who praying
【由多くんです*☆】 ❛Ugh, this whole situation is such a headache.❜ The verdette held a hand to his head as he pushed away yet another one of the city’s informational brochures. Very little about the setup made any sense. And no number of hours spent holed up inside the library would likely change that. He repositioned slightly to address the stranger seated in the next chair over, ignoring the fact that it was a guy. ❛Excuse me, do you have any Aspirin? Unfortunately, I ran out.❜
@dhatr ♥’d for a starter.
He remains still and unresponsive for a moment, considering without lifting his gaze. As his eyes reach the end of a page, though, he looks up. “I do not make a habit of carrying medicine on my person,” he muses. To be honest, it is because he typically does not use any: rarely does he feel such a lack of discipline that he does. “However... there is a store down the street where I’m sure you can buy some. I could accompany you if you require it.” The other boy had certainly said the truth, after all, when he had complained that the city itself was a headache.
“Hyuup!”
His first response is to be irked, and he can’t stop a small twitch of his brow at the fact that a, she’s touching him so suddenly and familiarly, and b, that she can pick him up like he’s no bigger or heavier than a kitten. His hand briefly twitches toward his rosary-not-a-rosary, before he once again remembers that he doesn’t have it on him, and he crosses his arms instead, petulantly. His tone, at least, is striving to be mature. “You would interfere with this servant of the Holy Mother so casually? I—”
Suddenly he is not being carried but thrown, and as much as he’s been unflappable up to this point, he can’t hold back a startled curse of, “Pohlkunkaaa!”

“…We have? No - I’ve only been across from Simon…” She’s pretty sure about this. “And I definitely don’t know the influence of a Mother, holy or otherwise.”
Okay, so she’s being a bit of a shit - she was just shot, for fuck’s sake, so surely that’s allowed. Right? Right. Cool. Especially since this guy was so… pretentious.
“Uh… I mean, I don’t know who it was - I was a little busy getting shot. And there’s not really any police or legal system here, so…” She shrugs the non-injured shoulder. “Um, anyway.. So, what’s your name? Did you just get here?”
Nahyuta stays silent for a moment, considering. “Perhaps this, too, is fated,” he acquiesces, briefly touching the pads of his fingers together. “It must have been decreed to be this way.” Cryptic, but that’s how he was made to be. He gives a slight shake of the head at her next statement, though. He can’t believe that, as soon as he’s left one place with a barely-functioning court system, there’s another. “Shameful. No one to enforce order...”
He pauses briefly, then continues. “I am Nahyuta Sahdmadhi, humble servant of the Holy Mother. I am rather new to the surroundings, but acclimating as can be expected.”
The tug at his jacket was the last thing he expected, but it was a pleasant surprise regardless. Here he thought Nahyuta would fling those rosaries around his skull and tighten them until his head popped. To hold his son in his arms like this and to have his affections reciprocated…It gave meaning to his decades of fighting, and his eventual sacrifice. Dhurke didn’t dare look a gift horse in the mouth by questioning Nahyuta’s sudden reception to his presence. He simply milked he moment for all it was worth. He stifled back any tears that dared try to crawl their way to the surface and instead forced a big grin as Nahyuta ended the embrace. The last thing he wanted was for this happy reunion to turn tearful.
“T-To be honest, I thought you could tell me that…” Nervous laughter masked his embarrassment and confusion. He knew that news of his death would break out during the trial, so Nahyuta gawking at him like he were a ghost didn’t faze him. He wished to know the trial’s outcome, but there was a wealth of other questions that demanded his attention first. “The last thing I remember is being on trial…I thought this was the Twilight Realm, but seeing as you’re here, that can’t be true…” As those words left his lips, that horrible thought crossed his mind once more.
“Unless…” He refused to say it; he didn’t even want to entertain the idea.
Nahyuta steps back. As soon as Dhurke mentions the trial, the questions lurking in the back of his head rear their own, and he can hardly keep his mouth shut long enough to let his father finish his sentences. He shakes his head slightly, though, in response to the last. “I recall nothing of the sort,” he says, his tone returning to ponderous. “Though I remember very little of what I was doing before I arrived here.” The last thing he can recall is facing Apollo during a trial, and his eyes close briefly as he offer up a quick prayer that he hadn’t been spirited away during the trial, at least.
But as soon as he is done speaking his piece, more words come tumbling out. “You... during that trial...” His throat is conspicuously dry, but he pauses for only a moment and keeps speaking. “You let us all think you were alive.” He remembers being so desperate for a conclusion, so that maybe, just maybe, he could go back to his father, back to the ideals he was raised with. When he had heard of Dhurke’s disappearance, that tentative hope had gone with him. “I thought you had abandoned the courts,” he grinds out, “we both thought you lost faith in them.”
He has to stop for a second, raw feeling rising to his chest. He has no idea what it is -- it’s such a mix of emotion he can’t put a name to it -- but it threatens to silence him. He tamps it back down. “I thought once that trial was over... everything would be done with. Why did you not just tell us?”
--- @themisarcher.
In his wanderings, Nahyuta hopes he is at least getting somewhat close to the law offices he is looking for. Unfortunately, even if he is close, he has not found it, and slowly is losing his esteemed patience. He’s still relatively near unruffled, though, when he comes across a young man wearing blue: his appearance is rather mature but the uniform he’s wearing detracts from it. It’s the uniform, though, that attracts his eye. The crest over the breast has him slowing down to give it a second glance, at first because it’s large and golden but then because it’s a set of scales, a near-universal sign of the court.”Pardon me,” he says when the boy is within earshot, “would you happen to be in a profession of law?”
dubledragon:
There seemed no satisfying answer readily available for Dhurke in regards to his new residence and sudden, supposed “resurrection.” He got the gist from the guy in the coat: this city was the center of some sort of “social experiment,” with participants spanning from multiple universes. To be honest, it sounded like malarkey to him. It sounded much more plausible to him that this was the afterlife. Either way he tried to slice it, some details just didn’t add up or were at the very least concerning.
Exhibit A…
“…Nahyuta?”
Never before had he been so glad and worried to see his flesh and blood. Before his mind could even ponder the ramifications that Nahyuta might have joined him in the Twilight Realm, he walked up to his son and pulled him in for a hug with his free arm.
“You’re a sight for sore eyes, son.” He tightened his grip on the prosecutor. Though he sounded elated, his tone was restrained; quiet. “I thought I’d never see you again…”
Dhurke fully expected him to pull away in utter disgust and call him a putrid shell of a man, but for a moment he indulged his selfish whim of wanting to be close to his boy.
Nahyuta had opened his mouth to speak again, but he had hardly begun to exhale when suddenly his view changed --- blocked by the same sight he’d gotten so used to seeing as a child, when he’d gone crying to Dhurke after Apollo took one of his toys, or after he scraped his knee on the way back to their house, or when the both of them fell into the river. How long had it been since he had last hugged his father? It had to have been years: like all other teenagers, hadn’t Nahyuta thought he’d grown out of it? After all this time, the sheltering contact of Dhurke’s arms feels the same as it had when he was a child. Reassuring. Solid. Instinctively, his own hand grips Dhurke’s jacket, the fabric under his fingers telling him that yes, this is real. Something he thought would never happen again.
All too soon, his mind comes back to him and he steps away from the contact, immediately missing it, but he has to get to the bottom of this now. “F---Dhurke,” he says, correcting himself --- the term Father is too familiar, and he doesn’t deserve to call him that now --- “How in the name of the Holy Mother are you here? Are you being channeled again?” If his voice is louder or more shaken than usual he will not acknowledge that.
