Do you know the design trends of 2017?
Cultural trends in design whether it’s graphics, homes, industrial or what not, move at the spend of light these days. Like technology, they are evolving and progressing thanks to new minds and new ideas. Trends aren’t controllable…here one minute, gone the next, and sometimes they pop back into our lives like an old friend. Keeping up on them is an effort, constantly connecting with trend followers keeps you on track with what works and what doesn’t…keeping your creative juices flowing, motivated and inspired. Here’s five trends in the design world that should be at the top of your list.
Trend 1: It’s all about personalized digital experience

Consumers today are savvy and getting more so day by day. As older generations slowly gain an understanding of computers and social media, the more recent generations meld into each other with a better understanding of the internet and digital world and their expectations for a more personalized digital experience becomes an industry concern. "The trend of human-centric design, writing, and marketing will become even more niche, with consumer expectations trending toward hyper-personalized communications. Consumers are getting too smart for that. They continue to want authentic, human experiences, but they want them tailored to their wants, needs, and aspirations. —Sierra Swanson, Senior Writer, Ologie
Trend 2: 6 Graphic design trends of 2017
With each year, a whole new direction or a variation of the past trends, leads the way for graphic designers to follow. There is a feel that some of the trends from last year, like mixed fonts and minimalism, have made their way into 2017 however, they have a new twist. The following six trends are:
• mixed font styles
• hand drawn illustrations
• minimalism (little more apparent than previously)
• modular layouts
• slick text added to photography especially in social media
• bolder, bright colors.
Trend 3: What’s the direction of home design
Some of the top trends in home design are a little unexpected. You have the usual, like the trending metal finish (satin brass) but did you count the voice activated assistants like Amazon’s Echo? Here’s a short list of what to expect in 2017:
• Satin brass
• velvet
• voice-activation assistants
• space saving kitchen storage walls
• monochromatic (mostly white with off white)
• outdoor/indoor shower feeling
•industrial
• sheds that turn into personal spaces
• spaces like the entry way and laundry rooms come into focus.
Trend 4: Social media apps make you look like a pro

Apps like PicsArt, Snapseed and Desygner help non-designers create stunning and slick graphics for their social media posts. The variety of options offered and the simplicity of use help to create images and graphics that can be personal, eye catching and professional looking. Aside from being on top lists like Hootsuite, there’s many social media managers that employ these apps while on the go, allowing them to post whenever and where ever.
Trend 5: Color of 2017: Pantone 15-0343
At first glance, this green reminds me of green screen which is used for CGI in movies. It’s named Greenery. Unlike last years colors Rose Quartz and Serenity (the pastel, muted trend), Greenery is a fresh, spring color with a yellow-green shade that is indicative of the bold color trend of 2017.
Personally, I’m not a fan of the word trend due to it denoting a temporary feeling or an overly “used” style...like a cliche. But, I do like change. It can be good and stimulating. However, it never fails when I find something that I connect with...boom! It’s replaced with a new trend. Sometimes, we have to hold onto those tried and true trends and blend them in with the new. Our aesthetics can be a trend in itself.
