the earth’s beauty never ceased to amaze her. pink opened her palms, smiling as two birds landed with no hesitation upon her gloves. they were so trusting.. so sweet. she had been so tired lately.. reforming as rose had taken a bigger toll on her body than she’d realized, so being able shift to her original form had been.. a relief, though she did miss her favored form. 

despite being occupied with the birds, pink noticed the slight movement within the trees,and she cocked her head to one side, assuming it was some sort of animal. she had a way with earth creatures.. taming them was quite simple. she allowed the birds to fly away, and bent, a small smile on her face. 

“it’s okay -- don’t be scared..!”

as the doors to her chambers slid shut, pink turned, pressing her back against the cold metal, angry tears welling up in her eyes. why did yellow and blue treat her like this? she was a diamond too.. just because she wasn’t as big as them.. or have as many planets.. it didn’t mean they should treat her like dirt. 

she hugged her knees to her chest, dropping her forehead against them in her frustration. when would she ever get a chance to prove herself? never, it seemed. as she picked up the faint sound of footsteps, she looked up, her eyes wide. 

“pearl!” pink rubbed at her cheeks as she realized that she wasn’t alone, hurriedly trying to shove any sign of her emotions to the side. “i didn’t.. i thought you were still with the other pearls!” had yellow sent her back to check on her immediately? figures.

“We’re sneaking out, pearl.” 

there was a spark of amusement in pink’s eyes as she lightly pressed her hand over her pearl’s mouth, biting down on her bottom lip to stifle a giggle. blue and yellow would have a FIT if they knew she was doing this, but.. she wanted to take one of the smaller ships… just.. explore around, fly through the stars for once. 

“i want to have some fun without blue, yellow and white looking over my shoulder the whole time!”

Pearl never tired of seeing Rosie like this….she was so passionate about everything, even after all these years.

“Oh, that’s-” was all she got out before Rose was pulling her along behind her, leading her toward the ‘wonderful’ thing. 

“Rose!” she laughed, happily running along to keep up. She wondered what it would be this time….a animal? A plant? Something else entirely? Even despite all the time they’d spent on this planet together, it never ceased to have new things to offer. 

“you’ll understand when you see it, i promise!” rose assured her with a joyful laugh, pushing aside some of the brush as she passed into the enclosure, her speed lessening to a slow, silent walk. she held her finger to her lips, signalling for pearl to remain quiet for a moment. 

“here it is..” she whispered, pushing aside some leaves. in the clearing.. one full of flowers and flora, there were hundreds of beautifully colored butterflies, soaring through the air in a intricate dance, of sorts. it was a beautiful sight, a mosaic of color and light. “isn’t it wonderful?”

She chuckled softly. “Oh trust me I know. I’m afraid she inherited all that from White. I swear your diamond never lets me do anything either. If it makes you feel any better I get non stop lectures from her. She won’t let me keep my off color gems and she won’t let me play with the organics.” She leans in real close giving her a mischievous grin. “Doesn’t stop me from doing it anyway though. Maybe we should do something together. Something the other diamonds don’t need to know about.”

“it’s not fair.” pink insisted, looking down at the floor, puffing out her cheeks in her annoyance. “i’m supposed to be just as important as they are, but they don’t trust me with ANYTHING! how am i supposed to get my own colony and stat my armies if they never let me do it?” all she ever wanted to do.. was prove herself. she couldn’t even get that.

still, black’s words prompted her to smile, and she stood up, curling her hands into excited fists, nodding her head. “yeah! i won’t tell anybody.. let’s do something fun!”

“oh! a human.. it’s been so long since i’ve seen one of YOUR kind.” 

bending down in front of the human, pink diamond still towered over him, but her smile was gentle and curious. she always had a.. fascination with human beings, and though the wars on earth had ravaged the planet, turning it into something unrecognizable, she could still not bring herself to leave. seeing a human now, after so long.. it made her almost giddy with glee. 

“look at you! you’re just adorable!”

“Alright. I trust you.” Almost in an instant he held something warm and familiar hug him. Like he was surrounded by love. Not just any love but the love of his mother. “Mom?!” He screamed in disbelief. Then lunging himself at her. Hugging her tightly. “I thought you didn’t want me anymore! Why are you here? Why do you look like the enemy?” He questioned. 

“steven..!” rose held out her arms as steven threw himself at her, and she caught him, hugging him close and burying her face into his hair, letting out a choked laugh of happiness, though her tears were building up once more. “oh steven..” she pulled back, holding his face in her hands, the love she felt for him clear in her eyes. “i have always wanted you, steven.. i never wanted to lose you, but you were stolen away from me.” as for the enemy, rose wrinkled her nose. “steven, it’s.. a long story. but.. pink diamond.. she never.. she was never shattered. i took on this form so i could leave my old life behind.. and start anew!”

Black found herself smiling fondly at the sound of her youngest’s cheerful and energetic voice. She shook her head no. “I’m never too busy for my little blooming flower.” She said lightly pinching her cheek. “What have you been up to sweetie?”

pink let out a little laugh at black’s pinch, wrinkling her nose slightly at her in response. she immediately felt her shoulders relax, some of the tension leaving her. “nothing.. as usual. pearl and i wanted to try solar skimming, but.. blue said no, and then yellow yelled at me again.” the smallest diamond allowed her lips to pull into an unhappy scowl, and she crossed her arms over her chest.

“all she ever does is yell.”

The boy was quite empathetic thanks to inheriting it from his dad so even though she was technically the enemy he found himself crying as she was crying. He reached his hand out. Trying to wipe away her tears but it was failing. “Um okay. If this will make you feel better. No tricks okay?” He asked. Then he focused all his energy to sense the other gem somehow. 

“no tricks,” rose promised, wiping away some of her own tears, closing her eyes to fully feel his aura. she let out a soft breath when she felt it, and extended her love towards him, wrapping her love and empathy around him, wanting him to really feel how she felt. he was her son. she was his mother.. she was PINK DIAMOND. 

there was no hiding it now. he had been raised by her fellow diamonds - he would know his heritage. so he needed the truth.

“Um hi? Sorry about this. The diamonds thought this experiment would help me connect with my mom. I told them it wouldn’t work. Wherever she is she’s either like dead or long gone by now.” He swam closer in the air to get a good look at her. She looked like that rebel they told him about growing up. He heard many horror stories so he flinched in fear. Backing away ever so slightly. “You wouldn’t be that traitor rose quartz would you? Cause if you are we probably shouldn’t talk. You’re a real bad guy from what I hear.”

rose could only stare at him, taking in every precious detail. he was so.. grown up. she’d missed it, she’d missed every wonderful milestone in his life, and she fell to her knees, tears welling up in her eyes and sliding down her cheeks. this emotion.. this grief.. it ached in a way she had never felt before. she could feel his fear, 

“steven.. don’t be afraid. i won’t hurt you.” her words were a whisper, but she closed her eyes, focusing on her aura. “concentrate.. you can sense me.. and i can sense you.” she pushed out her aura to gently press against his own. he should know her.. she could only hope he would understand the significance.

“how did you do that? that was incredible!” 

pink had seen humans do all sorts of crazy and wonderful things.. she had seen them build objects of wonder and mystery, had seen them achieve the impossible, but she had never expected to see a human fight with so much.. tenacity! plus, there was something else.. something more than brute human strength. she was hooked.

how could she not be? 

“i didn’t know humans had that sort of power!”

“black! black!” 

rushing into black diamond’s extraction chamber, pink pushed herself upwards into a jump, leaping up high enough to land on the side of the diamond’s tub, a broad smile on her face. none of the other diamonds had time for her today - she had been harshly brushed aside and even shouted out. she had forced her smile to remain in place - but she felt the sting keenly. 

“you’re not too busy, are you?” she moved to sit down on her knees, positioning herself so her bottom was pressed down to the ground, hands on the ground between her legs as she looked up at her fellow diamond. 

“yellow and blue are always too busy, lately..”

rose had suffered so much loss in her life, she barely knew where to begin recounting her pain. she had lost friends and allies, had pushed aside those she once called family, and fought against her home planet.. but to lose her son? she had never known agony like it, and every day for all of these fourteen years had been utter torture. to a gem, fourteen years would have been the blink of an eye, but for the first time, rose had felt each agonizing tick of the clock and slight turn of the world beneath her. 

she would have done anything to get him back -- and when she saw a homeworld ship landing on the beaches by the temple, she had seen her chance. she would take this ship.. and she would find her son. leaping down from the hand of the temple, rose landed harshly in the sand, sending the particles flying around her body. her gaze was hard, determined, but she faltered as the doors opened, and she felt a rush of a presence. it was one she hadn’t felt in fourteen years.. one she knew better than her fellow diamonds. this aura.. it.. it was...
