Why is it called Carfax Abbey in adaptations and fanworks when it isn't referred to as an abbey in the book? Was that in Stoker's notes somewhere?

Why are Jonathan and Mina's entries called journals, while Jack and Lucy's are called diaries?

What are "the smuts in London" [September 3rd] and what makes them better or worse?

No idea about #1 or #2, but 'the smuts' are air pollution. London used to have horrendous smog until the passage of the Clean Air Act in 1956, mostly caused by coal fires.

It’s called Carfax Abbey due to adaptation poisoning! iirc it’s Dracula 1931 that first calls the house Carfax Abbey, and I’ve seen it theorized that this was due to the film (and play it was based on) combining locations for time and budget. But in the book the house is Carfax, no additional Abbey, and many book fans on Reddit are vexed and mourning over the adaptation osmosis.

Diaries are intended to be more about explorations of feelings and inner states and impressions, journals are more formal record-keeping of one’s own life. HOWEVER, in contemporary English this distinction is basically irrelevant, and I don’t think it was rigorously enforced in the 1890s either, especially since I’m not sure the entries in Dracula qualify as neatly divided by that split. But that’s the nominal difference!

I can't help with 1 or 2

For 3.:

London was incredibly polluted at the time. London Fog? What we now call smog. Imagine all those coal fires for home and industrial use, all those chemicals.

Imagine a crowed city full of chimneys and smokestakes.

So all this black gunk would get on everything, sticky solidified particulates turned to flakes in the air and on things like clothes and layers of hardened goo turning buildings black. Solidified air pollution basically.

Smuts.

Weather differences matter here. People burn for heat as well as cooking and industrial uses in the Winter. Air flow may be better or worse depending on weather and season. Fog or no fog to make the air pollution more visible. That sort of thing.

Economic factors vary too. Factories and the like going in and out of business can effect what's in the air and how it combines.

The famous pea souper London fog that was really smog isn't really a thing any more because of environmental laws and technological changes, but recent events like the great lockdown show how strongly economic activity can influence air quality.

19th century England had both innovations and Depressions and recessions. Both would have some effect on the quantity and make up of the smuts.

I promise I have not abandoned this blog!

I made it very quickly after the film debuted, however, it takes be several years to confidently develop a muse. I’m excitedly still working on Renfield’s character and I hope to be back at it soon! 🪰🖤

It's been two years since I created this blog and I am happy to say he's simmered down very nicely. I finally have a good grasp on his character 🪰🖤

my friends!

i am planning on shifting Renfield into an independent iteration of him; that isn't to say what has been written is lost, but that it'll be based in a timeline similar to that of the original novel with an overarching original story developed largely by @thespiderspinning.

this also isn't to say I'm leaving Renfield (2023) behind. I ADORE that version of him and it is the major influence on my personal interpretation of Renfield. Divorcing from that canon gives me more freedom to turn him into a loyal freak of nature with a broken moral compass as well as play with magick more.

My wife and I have some very deep and original vampire lore that I'm very excited to (hopefully!) write more of here!
