Non-Profit that provides Mobility Aids

This is the master-list of what we do and what we're looking for as well as FAQs, but you can still ask us questions if you so wish.

"What do you do?" We provide free and personalized mobility aids to the marginalized, with a focus on queer people of color who cannot afford their own mobility aids. Right now, we only have the means to provide canes, crutches, walkers, and rollators, but we can also help with fundraising for wheelchairs.

"What can I/we do to help?" You can donate at our site (Home | Disabled Identities and Support (square.site)), reblog this, or draw some art of your favorite character or OC and share it with us!

"Can I/we get a mobility aid?" We are currently putting people on a waitlist as of 06/02/23, but as long as you are 18 or older and you live in the United States, you are eligible to receive a mobility aid from us. You can apply here: Home | Disabled Identities and Support (square.site)

"Where does my/our donation(s) go?" It goes directly to purchasing the mobility aid and shipping costs for the mobility aid. If you want to donate specifically to a wheelchair-user, we also have a page on our website (Home | Disabled Identities and Support (square.site)) to directly sponsor them! We do not use funds for personal use, future fundraising efforts, or for anyone's incomes.

"Can I/we see some examples of mobility aids that have been donated?" Yes, they are on our site (Home | Disabled Identities and Support (square.site)), but you can also see pictures by scrolling through our page.

Explanation Below:

Some of you may know, but this account is run by a non-profit called Disabled Identities and Support. This non-profit has a total of one volunteer, and that is me (I am also the founder of this non-profit.) I fundraise, I apply for grants, I take on advertising, I answer emails, I run the website, I make the purchases, I do it all.

Why? Because low-income physically disabled people deserve personalized mobility aids. I don't think this, I know this.

Here's the issue I am currently facing: my non-profit is low on funds.

I was the one that had to deliver the bad news to some of the people that had applied, and one particular person responded asking if my non-profit could afford to purchase their mobility aid if they downgraded to one that cost just $15.

This broke my heart. I can only imagine how distressed these people are having just found my non-profit only to have to be put on a waitlist while I fundraise.

So this is me begging: please, if you have even $5, please donate.

On our waitlist are queer disabled people, disabled people of color, people who are both physically and mentally disabled/neurodivergent (particularly physically disabled systems), disabled parents, disabled muslims, disabled Jewish people, disabled people who have faced homelessness, and people who fit more than one of the groups above.

If you learn anything from my many thoughts about words today please have this takeaway:

-USE YOUR (ESPECIALLY LOCAL) RESOURCES OR THEY WILL DISAPPEAR-

It is OK! You are not taking someone's seat or burrito! If you use a service that you need you make it easier for everyone to access that service!! You get added to the numbers that say this is a necessary thing! Especially if it is a resource aimed at marginalized groups - there are probably not that many people who actually know about or take advantage of it! Tell everyone who may be able to use it now or in the future! Go get some help and allow yourself to take up space and get added to the numbers when they're deciding to cut that resource or not.

In the same vein, use that mobility aid! Do you not need it 100% of the time? Who gives a shit! Does it help you? Does it alleviate pain or make you feel safer? Use it! Oh what will people think- people will start to slowly understand that not all disabilities present the same way every single day! People will start to realize more often how shitty their streets are designed or how many fucking steps it is to get from point A to point B on this campus. People will realize anyone can become disabled at any time and people they love have disabilities and !!!hopefully!!! VOTE for us to have actual rights!

This is your sign to not listen to any voice in or out of your head saying you don't need something Enough to partake and exist more fully in this world, and help make resources more accessible to yourself & others in the meantime

We may have a waitlist for marginalized people in need of mobility aids, but having a waitlist can be good.

Having a waitlist helps us apply for grants and helps us fundraise because it shows people that, yes, we do need the support because, yes, we are making a difference.

Don't let our waitlist stop you from accessing our resources because we are constantly doing our best to help you get the mobility aids you need and deserve!

I've seen some people talk about AAC devices in here but one thing confused me so...

Genuine question: Why people use these devices to type? Like, as far as I understood (read: 5 minutes Google search), these devices generate speech and are used when someone doesn't (or can't) talk, so why is it also used to type in some posts here?

Again, I'm genuinely confused (and curious) about it, not trying to be ableist.

AAC devices not only used to type. Symbol based aac have words and sometimes phrases on buttons and use those say what want to say. Sometime it easier build/type what want say in AAC app then put in social media app. Exactly why can vary between person and because of other things.

Kiku for example has trouble with language and sometime it easier figure out what want say and how want say using aac because of symbols because support language. And sometime Kiku can't type good so symbol based aac helps. This just a few reasons and Just Kiku's experience though. Other AAC users might have other reason.

Since the nonprofit is for low income, could you recommend some places for not-as-low-income disabled folks to get some awesome mobility aids?

Of course! Here are some places that we get mobility aids from: Dizzy Rat Co (formerly called Hell on Wheels Design) - they provide canes with spikes and chains! - they also sell a guide for $10 on how to spike your mobility aid, so you can spike a rollator, crutches, or walker, too! Neo-Walk - they provide cool canes with different handle types that are made of glass(?)! Cool Crutches - they provide canes and forearm crutches that can have funky patterns or a pattern of your choice! You would just have to upload the image to their website when ordering! Etsy: - There are some people that give away really nice and bedazzled canes and crutches! As you've noticed, there's mostly options for canes and crutches! We are eyeing Zeal as they're a new business making fancy rollators, but they probably won't open until the end of the year! If anyone knows any other good places to get cool mobility aids, feel free to message us!
