My Top Ten Favorite Movies
Listed in order of becoming on my top 10. This has nothing to do with how I’d rank them (because I don’t think I can).
I always loved the animation style and was always a strong story to me. If you don’t know the story by now, I am truly sorry and you must. Although, it’s quite dark. I grew up wanting a dalmatian for a long time until recently I had to tell myself my lifestyle is not currently suited for one and I’m not as active for how they are. Still absolutely adorable, though.
Bare with me, this one’s an odd choice, yes. For some reason, I just loved the humor and music in it. The story surrounds 3 farm…cows trying to cook up the money to save their farm from auction. In early elementary school, I’d come home and put it on every day. Not sure why, but it’s stuck with me ever since. Maybe because my parents didn’t willingly let me watch “Blazing Saddles” much as a kid.
Growing up playing piano, Aristocats was my SHIT. 5 cats on an adventure around Paris with countless musical numbers? Count me in! I love the animation still and the music is my favorite. I sang it all the time. And ask my friends, I still sing “Scales and Arpeggios” more than I’m willing to admit. It’s just a very colorful movie with a lot of heart.
A beautifully composed and written film taking place in Austria around right before World War II, this film/musical is graced by the wonderous voice of Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. I grew up watching this movie CONSTANTLY due to our little gold THX edition VHS tape and have memorized the whole thing. Of course, as I grew older, more and more made sense throughout the movie. Such a beautiful film not only in musical talent, but also in how it is beautifully filmed. Maybe this is why I like lemonade so much. “Not too sour, not to sweet. Just too… PINK.”
5. It’s A Mad Mad Mad Mad World
A true classic in my eyes, IaMMMMW has a beautiful cast ranging from Spencer Tracy to Mickey Rooney to Buddy Hackett with guest appearances from groups such as Don Knotts, the Three Stooges, and Joe E Brown among others. It’s truly well told and the longest movie in this list, telling the craziest and satirical story about a poor man and his suitcase of money.
6. Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron
With the only spoken word through dialogue of humans and narration, this movie brilliantly tells most of its tale through expression and behavior. Surrounding the westward expansion of the United States railroad, it covers the life of a horse and his herd through their quest to keep their freedom from man. With a bittersweet ending, it captures beautiful hand-drawn animation with boundless expression of all forms. You don’t have to look too hard for the symbolism in this one.
Apparently this movie is controversial to some in terms of its quality. While an interesting topic to base a movie around, it does a wonderful job creating room for multiple endings as well as multiple interpretations. Pay close attention to who is where. Acknowledging the over-the-toply qualified cast, this movie is sure to make you laugh not if through its social commentary and satire, than by Tim Curry just being Tim Curry running around and taking charge.
As an environmental major and activist, this movie has a bold and pressing message. While extreme, it does inspire at the end of the day. The first words you hear in the movie is an ad for leaving into space due to too much pollution and the first actual line of dialogue is “Directive?” which is already FAR into the movie. Hugely telling through visuals, this movie amazes me and I love its message heavily. Pay attention to my laptop and on it you may just see “PLANT!”
A true masterpiece cast aside by Disney, although the concept isn’t COMPLETELY original by retelling ‘Treasure Island’, there is still a lot of room for creativity. Creating living breathing creatures and a new spin on a classic, the movie goes above and beyond with visuals and animation whether hand or CGI. Carrying a good story and fun dialogue, this movie definitely goes above and beyond with the language choices making it more of a more vocabularic feel, but fun nonetheless. And the “Rattle the stars” speech gets me every time.
After only watching this movie for the first time in June 2018, this movie skyrocketed to the top immediately which is a very impressive feat. Grabbing me quickly with the crisp, full music and gorgeous glowing contrasted colors, this movie truly knew how to exist with amazing speakers and sharp screens. Telling a very adventurous story, the dialogue is often witty with the morals clear. But seriously, I can’t keep marveling at the lighting effects.
