I’ve gotten several messages and noticed the same question in the reblogs several times, so I’d like to expand on what I mean when I say that “trans woman” and “MTF” are not interchangeable and that “MTF” is not a politically neutral term when describing trans women:

So “MTF” literally stands for “male-to-female”. There is a common narrative in western society that trans women were “once men” and then “decided to be women” or “switched from man to woman”. This is has roots in the transmisogynistic notion that trans women are actually “biologically” or “socially” men and are lying, colonizing womanhood, or mentally unstable. That’s the extreme view, but it also comes across in cis-centered paternalistic tropes like “trapped in the wrong body” or “man on the outside is actually a woman on the inside” or (less tastefully) the “man in a dress” trope. This is the disconnect between the AMAB (assigned male at birth) and AFAB (assigned female at birth) trans experience (speaking generally). Trans men typically don’t grow up with these tropes being leveraged as violence against them (literally being set up as a socially ubiquitous object of disgust and ridicule).

Now, some trans women are fine with the “male to female” narrative, it legitimately resonates with them, and that’s fine for them. For some it doesn’t resonate but they go along with it because it’s easier for cis people to grasp and they’d rather not spend the energy fighting all the time. For a lot of others it doesn’t fit at all and represents another form of misgendering and erasure of oppression.

Many trans women don’t ever characterize or describe their experience as “I was male and then I transitioned to being female”. They were always a trans woman and the violence of cis hetero transmisogynist culture forced them to hide until they felt relatively safe enough to begin living their truth. She was never a boy, she was a closeted trans girl, threatened into hiding by a society that wants her and her sisters extermination.

And that’s why there is a general move away from the “mtf/ftm” characterization, particularly among trans women specifically. Obviously this doesn’t characterize all trans women because we’re not a monolith of universal common experience, but yeah, listen to us when we tell you that things hurt us!
