crimsonhooded:
this isn’t the time to be DIFFICULT when there was certain more they could get done for the people that needed then if they worked together — but jason couldn’t keep it up. as much as he thought he could keep CIVIL around dick when the time called for it, now that he was actually here, standing right in front of the man he had idolized. all he could see was ever reminder of how much of a FAILURE he had become.
“ call them what you want — those danger batons aren’t shit. ” but of course — dick still played by bruce’s playbook. NO KILLING, NO GUNS. it was practically like it was some damn commandment or something. one that never ended a problem permanently when things has gotten too out of hand.
there’s a pang of GUILT that hits when he sees dick wince as he holds his ribs, but he snuffs it out quick, like putting out a cigarette. “ don’t — don’t do that. ” jason’s voice is clipped. his body tense once the elder’s hand rests on his shoulder. “ don’t pretend to care just so you won’t feel bad if it all goes south. ” there was a time that if dick had said something like before, jason would have believed it. trusted in it. but this, the way dick was talking to him right now, that was something that came eight years too late. “ don’t put up an act for my sake, that ship passed a long time ago. ”
Dick decided to ignore the unneeded insult about his weapons. Jason was clearly feeling some extreme anger towards him, and that was fine. He could be angry, and throw out his insults, but that didn’t mean that Dick was just going to give up on him. He’d never stop trying to patch up the relationship between himself and the younger man. They’d never really had the chance to be all that close when they were younger, and Dick regretted not being there for Jason like he was there for Damian now. But he couldn’t go back in time. He couldn’t change things.
When he felt Jason’s body tense, he knew that he was getting to him. “I’m not pretending. I do care.” Dick had no idea what he could do to prove to Jason that he was sorry. He was sorry for not being there for him before he was killed, sorry for not attending his funeral, sorry for not being the best person when he came back as Red Hood. But he really hoped that time would heal Jason’s emotional wounds, but it didn’t. It didn’t even begin to help them scab over.
“I know I’ve never been the best brother to you. I know that I could’ve done more to be there for you when you needed me. I know that me giving up Robin probably got you killed. But I can’t change things now, Jason. All I can do is try and be here for you now. To maybe not be your brother, if that’s not what you want. But I can be someone you talk to once in a while, or a friend. I’m just trying to to apologize. Not just for today, but for everything. I know you hate my golden boy guts sometimes, but I’m trying, man.”
