like, ok. here’s this guy who, from Heaven’s perspective at least, is a balls-to-the-wall hedonistic little tramp, right? he binge drinks, eats constantly, goes gay clubbing and gets hands on with humans, etc… he is greedy for just… everything, all the sensory delights and new experiences of Earth, even more so than the supposed demon

and he’s going to pretend like he doesn’t want to throw himself at the only other living being that shows him the affection he is starved for? spare me! circumstances being different he would climb Crowley like a tree.

It’s not about being emotionally reticent or cold-hearted or dumb about feelings or any of that like people seem to assume… Aziraphale isn’t stupid, he knows exactly what he’s like, and he is terrified if he allowed himself that last indulgence he could never stop. 

And unlike eating sushi and drinking chateauneuf du pape that could have real and dangerous consequences for Crowley, specifically– and Aziraphale is a guardian

Keeping Crowley at arm’s length is about keeping him alive long enough to enjoy his company, not dismissing him or refusing to reciprocate or anything like that. he’s not in denial, he is not unaware of how much he loves Crowley, he is very very aware of how dangerous it is and he refuses to allow his own compulsions to hurt someone

#OH  #THANKS FOR PAIN OP  #and this is about the holy water aziraphale didn’t WANT to give to crowley originally  #he said they’d get in trouble for ‘fraternizing’ and chose to pull away to prevent it    #but crowley was trying to prepare for the worst because he didn’t want to stop even if it was dangerous       #asking for holy water was saying ‘i’m in this. with you. and i’ll fight and kill and die for the chance to be with you.’   #and aziraphale refused and refused and only gave in to stop crowley from running even FASTER into danger (a church crowley? really???)   #‘you go too fast for me’ wasn’t ‘i can’t catch up to your feelings'   #it was ‘you’re rushing to your own destruction and i’m desperately trying to hit the brakes on THAT'  #‘even if i want to go with you; even if it hurts to stop; i’m still going to try to stop you from going down this road’   #(the problem of course is that crowley isn’t going to LISTEN to that; he’s ready ride or die to see this through  #and he’s not going to suddenly obey warnings and instructions just because they’re for his own good   #not even from aziraphale in this case)  (tags via @equalseleventhirds )

I’m actually okay with the idea that “You go too fast for me” wasn’t a lie so much as an honest expression of discomfort with how far away from the rules it could take them, juxtaposed with Crowley, who never had any reticence bending rules and doing as he feels. As a demon, Crowley was cast out with the rest just for questioning but, unlike the other demons, it seemed like Crowley was always about questioning authority in any form more than specifically being against God. He thought it would be funny if they’d both gotten their first assignments wrong, and he first proposed the arrangement, which just threw everything in the face of propriety for their respective sides. Aziraphale, on the other hand, was mortified at the thought of doing something wrong, and it took him centuries to come around to the idea of trading assignments for convenience sake, just because it was against the rules. He’s always been behind Crowley in terms of his comfort level with pushing boundaries, and even if it’s just a little thing, I actually find it kind of inspiring to see a character state his limits outright to a prospective partner and have that be okay, especially after doing a huge thing that he refused to do years before that might have suggested otherwise.

But I wanted to reblog this for the historical context and its significance, because those are excellent points. Even if he wasn’t lagging behind Crowley on feelings, and whether or not it was more about protecting each other, it’s poignant to see how it can be hard to suddenly change your personal comfort level with certain things, regardless of society’s comfort level suddenly changing.

And you know what, Aziraphale was right. After the apocowasn’t they were punished not with banishment (like God did to Lucifer & them) but with actual, perminant death. And they didn’t even really do anything in the end but give a pep talk and buy some time. They didn’t even show up til the very end, and all their earlier efforts were wasted on the wrong kid.

In fact when Aziraphale gave his little speech about “you mean the ineffable plan?” It wasn’t heretical to the point of being denied, it was heretical to the point of being right. And for this heaven decided he was worse than Satan himself.

If it hadn’t been for their descretion (which was questionable) and the fact that no one (except for maybe one very horny fan-angel and a demon who just Didn’t Care) was checking up on them, they probably would have been killed for their association way before then.

And Crowley very clearly knows this. Despite the fact that he obviously feels a certain amount of hurt for the perceived rejection he very clearly knows that they are friends and that Aziraphale cares for him. (See: “I don’t even like you” “You do!”) So while he’s very clearly hurt he’s able to move on and not push because he knows why they have to be discrete and even if he naturally loves to rebel and feels safe moving forward he can’t be as hurt as fanfics often portray him as when he knows Aziraphale does not feel safe doing so.

I feel really strongly about this because Aziraphale gets a lot of flack for this scene even though he was right.

Also this is a very interesting illustration of the “I would die for you/with you” kind of love and the “I cannot watch you die” kind of love. Neither of them is really better than the other but it does hurt when the way you love someone doesn’t line up with how they love you, even if they are both the same amount of love.
